    Hey all -

I want to build a bar in the basement.. have a kegerator to start, but would like to build an actual nicer bar. What's involved in this? I'd prefer to source an actual bartop but I'm not sure where to get stuff like that. Any suggestions? I'd be ok with building it myself too (in a former life I have done general construction work) but kinda wanted to get a quicker start with some nicer stuff. Let me know what you think!

Only suggestion of not much help is to consider looking at used options first. I was going the route you are but then did some searches on the OfferUp app and Craigs list and was amazed how many were selling off complete bars for close to give away prices. I ended up getting a beautiful virtually new hardwood complete bar for only a few hundred including NIB leather stools. Might be worth the hunt first. People tend to grow out of bars faster then exercise equipment...

Bar construction is fairly easy, as the components are modified boxes (cabinets). The top is what usually makes a great looking bar. Companies like Rockler and Hardwoods Incorporated sell the mouldings to give your top a professional look.

You should be able to find construction techniques and design ideas online.

make sure you accommodate for plumbing, including a dump sink, dish sink (those should be separate), area for trash, cabinets for backstock and glassware, plenty of tabletop for people to rest drinks and gather.

You'll need some of this too. I'm the one that needs a bar.

Yes! I must not have articulated this quickly but this is my intention. I’ve got a ton of work to do left on my house so this would be great if it was set and forget ..

Nice work! 21 different kinds of ale on tap?

Hi OP, have you considered a back bar? They tend to take up much less space. A bar looks cool, but consider if you are really going to sit at it. We get drinks and go to other parts od then basement or down by the pool or dock instead.

Don’t know if you have a large liquor collection but they get incredibly heavy. In my case, I bought a separate industrial cabinet to store my collection. It is 4x4x2, and each shelf will store 1500 pounds. This is on the extreme end of things, but it looks cool as hell.
