I've played both. For my money, LOTR wins without question. But, its NOT my money. 
For the casual player- each games has its pros and cons. Wildly different themes. TSPP has quirky shots and things happening all over the playfield. LOTR has a great sound package, cool magnet, and neat metal ramps. Your playing them sparingly in the wild should give you a fair idea of what a casual player might enjoy.

It's sad to say that the Pinside "rankings" are part of Pinside I would actually like to see change dramatically or just go away completely. I haven't looked at them in years and would not miss them for a second.
