There is debate. Let’s answer it and let the numbers speak. Please vote in the poll.

I like all three tracks, especially Anaheim in No Fear's video modes.

I'm in favor of video modes in theory, but I feel like most of the ones we've gotten just aren't very good....

A lot of them can't hold a candle to what hobbyist videogame devs can put out in a weekend

I like video modes that are good, I don;t like the ones that are bad. Does that help? Nope.

    EDIT:
Can;t believe this made it 2 minutes without having to hear aboot them killing some flow bros flow.

I like video modes that take a little work to get to. Too frequent or easy does kill flow as TheLaw previous stated. Nice to have a little break to gain your bearings.

I think a good video mode should be fast and exciting. Both fast in terms of gameplay and how long it takes to complete.

T2 is one of my all time favorite video modes. Super fast and exciting and doesn't take too long, and it fits the theme... Attack from mars... It can last a bit longer... But, it nails the theme, is a fun game to play, and once I learned about the martian bomb on launch button... A bit easier, but still no guarantee that I will beat it.
BSD has a cool one, nice risk reward to it. And while Ghostbusters isn't fast(don't cross the streams) there is a strategy element to it that I like and so I think its a good one, because it further engrosses you into Ghostbusters.. .And a video mode should expand or build upon the world under glass.

With that being said... If its a bad mode... No thanks. I'll pass. Game of Thrones is perhaps one of the worst modern examples. Better without it.

The only good video mode is no video mode.

I’d like to see what someone can do with the new bigger displays.

I agree. Ultimately, video modes are fairly subjective, but if they're done like the ones in IJ - particularly mine cart and raven bar - then I'm most certainly in. Love shooting the toast at Spike in JY and the wolves in BSD. Other modes just detract from some games and aren't fun to play (I'm thinking CV and GOT).

Attack from mars vid is definitely cool. Fishtales is an all time favorite too I love torpedo the water skiers. I wish my Addams Family had a video mode like a "driving range" to smack golf balls into the neighbors house. You would have to time the shot correctly by stopping variable strength then direction meters. Or maybe frying unwelcome visitors with spot for Munsters. Then there's the Simpson's pinball party they are video characters so video mode isn't that much of a stretch

Of course baby pac man has the ultimate video mode

Never played CV in real pin form. Only ever played it on my ps4 via pinball arcade... I didn't know it had a video mode. Just shows how much I suck at that game... But, then I've also only rarely ever gotten the video mode in MM... In MM its not worth going for and I focus on castles and medieval madness.I also think that Sterns Harley Davidson's Video mode while not being bad... Is weird. You want to hit people on your motorcycle????!?!?!?!?!?!

I think the mode would have been better if you just avoid cars and traffic and maybe have them ramp up the difficulty.

The Getaway I think I enjoyed that one.
Don't really like Champ Pubs... But, its fine for what it is and is a somewhat easy mb.
I really think Creature from the Black Lagoon has a fun one as well. Short and fast, but its a moment in the game. And it really drives home the humor and the whole drive in aspect. Just a fun moment... And really... You kind of have to want to get video mode to unlock it. Because really no reason to shoot for that ramp that many times. No need to hit it for an EB shot, or MB setup shot, or jackpot... So if you hate video modes you never have to play that one.

Lethal Weapon is a game that basically is designed around video modes. And I really like that game. I like how they incorperate the loading the gun and then blasting bad guys while you have to keep flipping. And the other various modes.

Stern's Star Wars... I don't hate it. I think it looks good, plays alright. But, not really fast paced, and is kind of basic and easy... Doesn't really serve a purpose and I'd be okay not having it in the game. I think they really should tie in the video mode with the game to make it more of a moment.

    “WHERES NEDRY!?!”

It’s not the video but the repetitive callouts with them that drive me nuts. Variety is key.

This was always one of my favorites.

Looks like Stern reused that mode for their Harley Davidson with only very minor changes...
Looks to be better in GNR. And now, that mode makes more sense to why it is how it is.

Thanks for sharing. I learned something new, as I've never played a GnR before.

I think they get old quickly and divert from the core game. So I vote for developers working on the actual pinball code to get deeper rulesets instead of not so fun video mode.

CFTBL and peeping tom video mode is great! Always gotta get a FATALITY! Quick ones are great and don’t distract at all. SW asteroid run is an excellent way I think programmers could utilize the lcd screens with video modes. Moderation is key though.

    #18 4 years ago

Most of them are so bad, they are a huge negative.

BSD and FT are good though.

    #19 4 years ago

NO. If I wanted to play a video game, I'd be in front of the MAME cabinet on the other side of the room.

It was originally used in Data East Guns N Roses, then reused again in SEGA Harley Davidson which later became Stern Harley Davidson.
Data East sold off their pinball division in 1994 to SEGA and this video mode was SEGA basically reusing the same video mode Date East had already developed.
Harley Davidson came out in 1999 and was SEGA's last pin before being sold to Stern.
Stern changed a few things, but basically the SEGA and Stern versions are the same game and both use the video mode from Guns N Roses.

I like video modes if they are done well.
Dr. Who is one I really like as well as the video modes on Indiana Jone, especially the mine carts and ravens bar.
Some pins like Dr. Who have the ability to turn the video mode off if you don't want it.
I think that's a good option because then people that like video mode can play it, people that don't can turn that feature off.

Video modes that suck, just plain suck.
Jurassic Park, The Lost World Video mode is one that I find totally worthless.
All you do is swing over the head of the T-Rex and is virtually impossible not to complete.
I mean you really have to try to die on this one.

Stern harley davidson has the exact same video mode. I love it too but have never done THAT well at it!

Mario mushroom world video mode is awesome. It plays a lot like the original mario bros game.
I also liked the 2 modes on Black Rose. Walk the plank and swim from the shark I think?
Viper night drivin' had a fun one too.

So if 66%+ of pinball buyers WANT video modes, why aren't we demanding & getting them?
