I’m planning to test a coil outside of my machine for a drop target.

I want to use my bench power supply.

Could someone tell me what voltage I should use for the SA-3-23 coil? I cannot find what it is rated. 12v? 24v?

    Thank you,

A coil is just a spool of wire of a certain gauge for a # of turns.... for instance, what's the difference between a 23-800 (800 turns of 23 ga. wire), and 23-800 50v? (800 turns of 23 ga. wire)..... nothing.

You're burn it out quicker at higher voltages for sure if you put full on for long pulses.

The games it would have come out of would have been 24v (ac), 50v DC, 28vdc, or 50vdc.

The usual way to test a coil is to take a resistance measurement of it and compare to pinball medic's chart (also at flippers.com IIRC) - not hook it up to power. Resistance of coils is usually relatively low and is seen almost as a dead short (<20 ohms)

There should be more to the part number than that. Can't tell how strong the coil is without it.

    Sorry the part is SA-3-23-850-DC

I know I can test resistance but I am trying to work on my drop targets and would like to power the reset outside of the table. I didn’t think it would be a big deal to power it via my adjustable power supply.

    Thanks again

25-30VDC should work fine for that coil. Williams games use similar for their 3 banks and run at 28VDC

The answer would be that you set your supply to the same voltage as your machines supplies then to get the correct test result.
