I don't see a club for this yet, so I thought it was worth creating.

I purchased an Oculus Rift a couple of months ago. I thought it was a gimmick until I experienced it at Pinball Expo last year. I couldn't believe how good it actually looked. I finally got off the ledge when I moved. I setup my office with multiple monitors that I robbed from my racing simulator. Now I was in a position to either purchase new monitors for my sim.... or... or I could finally make the leap into VR.

I did the latter. The first experience in the default Oculus intro is pretty incredible. I couldn't believe how well it worked, and I had a grin on my face every second. Here are some of my favorite games so far:

Superhot - this is a must. It works incredibly well in VR. Time moves when you move. I recommend a bit of space for this one.
Echo Arena - This one is free on rift, and very fun. There's a definite learning curve. It's basically tron/ultimate frisbee in 0g.
Echo Combat (beta)- Like Echo Arena, it's in 0g, but you have weapons and are trying to escort a payload.
Robo Recall - A shooter that makes you feel like a badass. Reach to your hip for a sidearm, or over your shoulder for a long gun. This one looks pretty incredible, and is free with Oculus (touch?).
Elite:Dangerous - This is a space flight sim that is best played with a HOTAS. I spent a lot of time playing around with controls. It definitely takes a while to get this setup to be playable in VR, but the experience of landing in a space station is one of the most memorable experiences I've had in gaming.

I've taken a sort of hiatus lately. I'm still trying to get settled in my new home, and just don't have time to setup my racing rig or have my hours sucked into games right now.

This thread feels a lot like a VR lobby.

Motion sickness seems to be related to locomotion systems in games. I feel like when you get a handle on controls that leaves. Unfortunately some of the games I recommended are oculus exclusive (I think) which is an annoying but necessary problem with VR.

I tried using a cable management system I found on amazon for roughly 20. It's basically several retractable key rings, and over sized o-rings to accept the cables. It works ok, but getting the cables twisted above your head or around your body isnt much better than around your feet at the end of the day. I might play with it a little more, but I think VR desperately needs wireless.

Quoted from DeeGor:

Most games are extremely shallow and have one objective.

I'd love to see a large game studio give us a truly immersive game that was created with VR in mind, and not bolted on to some existing game. I know Valve has some things coming in the future, but they're typically so slow that my VR headset will likely be out of date when it finally gets released.

To me, most games aren't worth playing unless they were created for VR, specifically. The exceptions to that are simulator-type games that have some sort of peripheral attachment (driving or flight sims).

VR design seems to be really challenging. There are so many minute things in traditional games that become burdensome in VR.

I'm glad to see Valve is a player, but it's also probable that I won't be able to experience those games since I don't have the correct hardware.

My computer is finally VR ready, and oculus rift is pretty affordable but I'm looking for that WOW game to make the jump. Following.

What type of game are you looking for?

#21 5 years ago

Another free oculus game (there's actually a lot of value in free games) is Lucky's Tale. It's another platformer, and does really well to show that VR can do more than just 1st person stuff. It was a good enough game that it got a non-vr release.

Brass Tactics is also free to try, I believe. It's a RTS game, and provides proof of concept for RTS in VR at minimum. I've only popped in to give it a try, but it gets great reviews.

Quoted from epthegeek:

"The Armics" from TNA in Beat Saber. Wanted to play around with making a custom beat map. That happened.

Awesome! I've played the preloaded songs, but haven't really looked into adding in new stuff. Is it pretty simple? Is there a single location to grab them all?

#31 5 years ago

I've played this for a few hours. It's cool in its own way. It's free. I like paintball enough, but the movement system can be a little frustrating. You can "cast" your character to a position, and then you're locked in that position for 2-3 seconds. You can still lean/duck, etc, but it makes moving around the map a little tough. It solves a problem, where you would otherwise be able to teleport yourself to avoid being shot, and also avoid motion sickness from directional movement. It's worth trying, but not a reason I'd buy a set, personally. It reminds me of wii bowling and those types of entry games.

Quoted from toyotaboy:

Mission ISS and Adrift look neat

Lone Echo is one of the top tier games available. Check out some of the reviews/video for that, but be careful of spoilers. I haven't played it, but I have played Echo Arena and Echo Combat, which are based on Lone Echo. Both Arena and Combat are pretty incredible, and I highly recommend them. I will be buying Lone Echo as soon as it goes on sale.

Quoted from toyotaboy:

What are the best racing sims, I usually end up gravitating towards those when I buy the next console.

I don't think it gets any better than iRacing for realism. It's the main reason I got VR in the first place, and I've yet to experience it (lots of setup to do in the new house). Your opponents are other humans using their actual names. You progress in 2 different ways - 1) by safety rating, you earn your licenses and can compete in higher tiered events, and 2) irating places you in a group of a similar skill set. It's one of the best systems I've seen to keep things fair. People aren't going to ram you going into a turn, because if they do they can lose their license. It's a very thorough simulator, you can get as deep into racing as you want. I've read books on professional race car tuning to better tune cars for myself and others - something I enjoy playing around with.

For a lighter experience, I hear that Project Cars is very good.

I think I'm looking forward to cordless more than any other advancement.

Also, as a grown man that has several pinball machines and other stupid things, I'm also squarely in the market for something like this once it becomes viable and reasonably priced.

I've been watching for some reasonably priced software architectural design software in VR. I haven't found anything that meets my needs. TiltBrush is cool, but as far as I can tell, there's no dimensions shown, so it makes it useless for room design.

Does anyone know of anything like this? I'm basically looking for a sketchup style program in VR. I'd love to see how my basement might look in room scale with walls knocked out, pins moved, etc.

#71 4 years ago

I'll check into those, thanks.

I'd pay up to about $50 for something decent.

I'm surprised there aren't more options out there. This seems like a space where VR would be really useful, especially for architects, interior designers, real estate agents, etc etc etc.

captainadam_21 Just saw this. Not sure what version is best, since I'm not really interested in a hardware change until a real next gen. If I remember the quest correctly, it was originally standalone and wireless, but later allowed the option to be added to the pc for additional titles? If that's true, that would make it pretty appealing (without knowing the other comparative specs). The ability to untether for certain titles would really help the experience.

As far as game, no, they really dont have much replayability. I think the best VR game is superhot. Its amazing. You will want a little space to move to play that one (probably 10x8?). There are some other good ones... people really like beat saber, it's just not my thing. I might give it another try.

I think it's best used as a peripheral to some sort of hobby you already have, namely sims. If you're into driving or flying sims, I think that's the only way you get longevity out of this in its current form. I was big into sim racing but just cant get myself to turn to climb behind the wheel as much anymore. Its really fun when I do, but it's also just a bit of a process to get everything working well together. Long stints of non-use only complicate that.

I expect to strap my oculus on again with some regularity when the x-wing title is released in fall. I'm metering my expectations, but I already have a HOTAS, and I loved the original x-wing series.

Elite:dangerous was also pretty mindblowing, but the text in that game in the backdrop of space really messed with my eyes after about an hour. Leaving a space port for the first time in VR was probably one of the coolest video game experiences I've had in my life, though.

So yeah, if you dont think you'll be into something like beat saber, or if you dont have a sim hobby in mind, then probably plan on maybe 30 hours of worthwhile gameplay. That's a guess, but the titles are relatively thin, and those with replay value even thinner. I really hope the x-wing game can change that for me.

Right now playing Arizona sunrise.

Right on, enjoy. I do think it's probably really cool if the horror genre is your thing. I'm way too jumpy for those kinds of games. I'll probably get half life once it goes on sale, but I think it might end up being as stressful as it is enjoyable.

Just found this thread! I'm the guy who made the PinSim for the Tested video earlier in this thread. I can't believe no one has mentioned VPVR yet -- Visual Pinball VR. I'm not trying to start a war about the merits of virtual pinball, but I own real machines and still love having 100+ fully rendered classic tables to play in VR too.
Most of the tables are uploaded here with the "VR Room" prefix:

It's a bit of a pain to get setup, but well worth it if you've got a gaming PC.

Very cool. I played the Stern and FX3 apps. I should just dedicate a saturday to getting VPVR working. Then I would definitely need to build a pinball controller.

PinHacks Thanks again for providing these links. I got a couple of games working in VR over the weekend and it seems really cool. One problem I'm having is finding ROMs for some games. Am I missing something on how to locate those?

Has anyone tried Squadrons yet? I'm going for immersion, so I've coupled VR with HOTAS. It's really amazing. I've been waiting for a proper successor to the x-wing series for a long time. It feels like we have it. Getting into the cockpit of the rebel ships is completely surreal.

I had a lot of frustration with setup, mostly with some annoyances surrounding the HOTAS setup. There's still a lot of controls I need to figure out how to map, but I got it good enough to enjoy some dog fights. I dont really feel like I'll be competitive in MP going against controllers and keyboard and mouse players, which makes me wish there was a more robust single player campaign.

I hope it does really well. For me an elite:dangerous style rpg with this theming would be a dream come true.

I just learned about that today. What are you planning to use it with? If I could use it for flight stuff AND sim racing I would entertain it, but from what I've seen the driving stuff doesn't look nuanced enough, way too much movement. I saw this is one of the alternatives:

https://www.feelthree.com/

#105 3 years ago

Are you playing ED with HOTAS? I really really liked it, but the text started to mess with my eyes when I played for more than 45m or so. I also got tired of trying to fiddle with the controls to be able to play it entirely within the HMD using only the HOTAS. I might revisit it if I ever get bored of Squadrons.

#107 3 years ago

I can't comment on which of those yaw type units is better or why. I literally found out about them today, and saw both mentioned, so just wanted to throw out the one you didn't mention in case you weren't aware of it.

I forgot about voiceattack. I started to customize it but never really got things the way I wanted them. I do like mapping to physical buttons when possible, and I'm a bit of an optimization freak (I'm still tweaking the Squadron controls which has way fewer), but that would be a really good way to supplement.

From my post 4 months ago:

So I joined the club officially 4 months ago but I didn't have a computer that could run my Valve Index. I now have:
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard: TUF Gaming X570 WiFi
RAM: 16GB of DDR4
GPU: The EVGA 3070 XC3 Ultra
Over the past few months I was steadily upgrading my computer and about 2 weekends ago I showed up 20min before my Microcenter opened in hopes of buying an NVIDIA 3000 series video card. I was talking to 3 people in front of me and 2 had a 2080 super duper edition already and just wanted to game in 4k. When they opened though store employees were like "all NVIDIA 3000 series are sold out". A bunch of people just walked off in frustration. Except for a few of us. The guy in the blue sweater got a hold of a manager and showed him their website. Some people waited at least an hour or traveled more than an hour to get one. We were fucking PO'd. So the manager is like "oh we got a shipment in this morning....we got 1 3080 and.....2 of the 3070's". It didn't become chaos but the 2 people in front of me were honest and confirmed our placement in-line. The people around us were ultra jealous and 1 asked if we were going to scalp it. The guy in the blue sweater wanted to actually flip his old card and the other wanted it to game on his Valve Index like I want to.
So I played a bit of Superhot VR last weekend and that was incredible but I started playing Half-life: Alyx yesterday and I was BLOWN away. I just completed the part where I derailed the train. Weird stuff happens to you after you start using VR I have read and it's just not me. Text on my monitor looks like it "floats", I get super mentally tired after gaming in VR, you feel like you are on a boat afterwards. This goes away though the more you use VR apparently as it "conditions" your mind. Also I can run everything maxed out, no NVIDIA stuttering.[quoted image]

That's awesome you got a card. I'm looking to upgrade my 1070, but it still mostly manages the games I play, so I'm not in a crazy rush. The game I'm playing most in VR right now is still Star Wars Squadrons. I was pretty into the original XWing series when I was a kid. After waiting decades for a proper replacement, this somehow has exceeded my expectations.

Superhot was a great experience. I loved every minute of it. It's what really sold me on VR.

I bought Alyx on sale. I've played a lot of the Half Life stuff... both the core games, bits of the side story games, and a lot of original CS back in HS. I'm not into the horror genre at all. I've just started Alyx in small bursts, but man, I really need to be in the right mood to strap on the headset for that game. It looks absolutely amazing... the immersion and detail is awesome. I really want to be able to push through it, but the stress levels are real.

I've had VR for a while now, and I will say I still get fatigued after a session, especially on those more stressful games. The Rift CV1 would mess with me when I looked at pretty much any text, and the godrays started to get to me. Moving to the Q2 has helped with almost all of that. The lack of decent speakers on this one is a drawback. I can plug in decent headphones or use blutooth, but the extra steps to get into a game, or any inconvenience of taking the set on and off, are all things that really put me off. I've never felt sick during or after gaming. It did take a little bit to get my sea legs with straight up walking movement (I feel like leaning slightly helps a little) but now it's all pretty comfortable.

I've tried recroom, but it just made me feel really old. What am I not getting that I should be? I played the paintball a few times. Kind of fun, but not much of a fan of the teleport movement.

I got my HP Reverb G2 in a month ago and still waiting to build a new PC for it. Can't get the Ryzen CPU (5000 series) nor the RTX3080, and it looks like it will still be months out! Running it now on a quad core with GTX1070. Runs well with the few older games I'm playing, but can't get into Alex yet! Love the head set. Very comfortable and easy to put on even with my glasses. Controllers work fine for me once I got good lithium rechargeables. They eat through normal batteries ridiculous! No screen door. Fantastic colors and image quality!

I was able to run Alyx pretty smoothly on a 6th gen i7 and a 1070 (with low settings of course). I'm holding off on really jumping into it until I can get a 3070 or 3080. Who knows when that will be.

I also got a Quest2 and am pretty impressed. My only complaints coming from cv1 are the shitty integrated speakers (have to wear headphones) and the stock strap. Air link is really cool, and totally agree that it frees me to be able to do more with room scale stuff.

#167 2 years ago

Quest 2 is pretty great, even better now that you don't need to connect to a Facebook account.

It can be standalone, and works great in that way. You can also connect to a PC to take advantage of steam games, better graphics, etc. It won't work with Xbox or PS.

I think the pro strap is essential. I also got a vrcover face plate thing too, but that's not a necessity.

Quoted from Gov:

Agreed. Walkabout MG is by far my favorite VR experience outside of HAlf Life Alyx.

Wow, that's saying something. I think Superhot is mine.

Lately I've been playing Eleven Table Tennis. It's incredibly good. I 3d printed a paddle peripheral, and that takes it to another level.

I think people coming from traditional console gaming sort of overlook these games when deciding on the platform. All there is is mini golf, ping pong, lightsaber dancing, and space frisbee? The thing that you don't really understand until jumping in, is how fun these simple activities actually are.

The Quest2 has practically provided me with a full size ping pong table and the space it requires in my own home (complete with real opponents). I haven't played walkabout (I will now with the recommendations here), but I suspect the feeling of owning that game is the same - it's not like owning a game in the traditional sense, it's like owning the entire activity... like buying your own mini golf course for you and your friends.

I heard some things about the modding community, so decided to pop Skyrim back in and see what they might have done with an originally clunky VR game. I'm impressed, and encouraged. There are some really big additions, from hl:alyx style grabbing, to incredible visual improvements. There's even a mod that allows you to speak your dialogue lines to select them. I can't decide if I'm nerdy enough to put forth the effort to make that one work... but I'm tempted.

First, here's some really sold info on setting up a dedicated pc wifi6 card. I didn't have luck with this (I have wifi6 integrated in my new mobo). I eventually just moved one of my mesh routers to the same room to really improve my bitrate. While the whole vid may be helpful, I'm linking to a really important info from this video about fixing a lag spike due to a persistent windows network search every minute or so.

For those that aren't aware, there's some tinkering necessary to optimize the Quest2 to PCVR. Here's a good video to talk about setting up airlink and specifically the debug tool (which is otherwise pretty well hidden).

Finally, here's the most helpful and concise vid on setting up mods in Skyrim:

RE4 really seems to be the most play-ready port that we've seen. It's been applauded for good reason. Well before that there were all-time AAA games ported... Skyrim, Fallout 4. Their ports were pretty half-hearted and clunky. What the community has done to remedy that is pretty incredible. They're not only worth playing, they're actually kind of mind-blowing. Since a lot of that magic is propped up by mods, you should expect a number of bugs.

Some others I cant speak for are firewatch (I'm going to grab that one next), resident evil 2, half life 2, gta 5 (hear there's also a wheel mod), rdr2 (beta?) and BOTW (not sure how that would work).

Next to the pimax 8KX I’m using or the valve index or for some games the htc vice 2.0 controllers, also the vive trackers and the haptic body suit. For running I’m using the kat vr [quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Wow, cool setup! Would you buy the KatVR again? I have some room, but not a huge open space. I've thought about getting soemthing like the Kat once the tech matures a bit.

Quoted from BC_Gambit:

My VR mojo is still going strong. I bought a second Quest 2 to play with my daughter.
Walkabout mini golf, Cook-Out, Table tennis... lots of fun together!
And solo I have been enjoying some of the excercise apps. I put over 70 hours into Until You Fall with arm weights on (Not an excercise app but it was a fun way to get some). Arm weights on with Ragnarock and Beat Saber I have also sunk stupid time into over the year (20-30 mins a day adds up ).
Too many good games to play, not enough time really.
I finally tried Stride (which somehow encouraged me to have weird enough posture that my back started to hurt... so I am not sure about that one) and beat Red Matter and Yupitergrad over the Christmas break.
And Eleven Table Tennis is my new jam; I bought it on sale a week or two ago and thought "how good can this be" after hearing good things for years. I suck but it is fun, and the multiplayer is just too easy to have a good time (if you don't mind being humbled).

Eleven is awesome! They're adding up to 4 player support soon. One of these is pretty essential to help with spin etc

I hear VTOL does it really well, but I'm skeptical that VR controller support is great for flight sim stuff. I might have to try VTOL and see what the buzz is about.

To me the HOTAS is the way to play Squadrons. I'm pretty convinced I'm less accurate, but the fun and immersion more than makes up for it. I had an X-55 Rhino, but gifted the stick to my brother. I still use the throttle as it seems perfectly fine to me, and has an adjustable and satisfying resistance to it. For the stick I finally decided to upgrade to a VKB Gladiator. It's really solid for the 150 or so that it runs. I actually considered getting a matching left hand model since games like Elite:Dangerous prefer it. At the end of the day that's not a title I've played enough to justify it, and my rig would take some finessing to get it to align properly. It won't take much for me to grab one if there's another space shooter that warrants it though. I also have a buttkicker installed which makes an incredible difference.

Squadrons is one of my favorite video game experiences of all time. Seriously. Sitting in that X-wing cockpit for the first time was mind-blowing. I'm glad the dev team didn't half ass it, even though EA really did. The multiplayer is sadly pretty dead, or full of high level players utilizing the coincidentally named "pinballing" method. Still, even just hanging out in the practice area and spawning enemy squads to hunt down is a lot of fun. In a last breath Motive did also add private lobbies to the game, so there is still some future potential.

This trailer is also one of the coolest things to come out of Star Wars in the last 5 years in my opinion:

#191 2 years ago

Not really sure what the best cheap options are. I think the vkb is a really good value at 150, but that's just the stick. The x56 is probably a decent setup. I was really happy with my x55 throttle (still use it, and feel no reason to upgrade) but my x55 stick had a pretty annoying center bump I couldn't get over, which made aiming really tough. I even ditched the center spring and spent some time modding it with external springs, but that really didn't do it for me.

So anyway, I'd definitely recommend the gladiator nxt, but not sure about a throttle.

https://vkbcontrollers.com/?product_cat=gladiator-nxt-joysticks

The good news in your battle against peripherals, I use my fanatec pedals (clutch and throttle) as rudder pedals without too much want for something else. I have those mapped to roll and it works really well for xwing.

#192 2 years ago

I'm still playing a lot of skyrim. Or more accurately, tinkering with it. That's not really out of necessity, it's just that there are a lot of mods and I'm really just trying to get the best visual experience.

I'm running a 6900xt and 5800x. The AMD cards just isn't optimized for VR. I think a GTX 3070 would probably offer at least a more consistent experience, if not overall better.

It's really been a while since I dove really deep into the PCVR stuff. There's a lot of nuance in the setup or the Q2 to get the most out of it. First of all in the Oculus app click into the headset and make sure to up your HZ if your PC can handle it. Then you can move the resolution slider all the way to the right. I believe as far right is the full resolution the HMD allows, with some overlap considered to allow the full res at the eye center.

There's also the debug tool buried within the program files. You can mess with some settings there, particularly if you're having some bitrate issues messing with your video quality. I hear some people claiming any sort of air connection isn't going to work well unless you set to 0. Others have had luck pinning their bitrate down. I think that takes some trial and error. You can also set supersampling here at the pixels per display. 0 will be automatic, 1.0 will be full pixels, 1.2 would get you about 20% supersampling.

I had been using Airlink or the link cable for perceived ease of use, but I actually found recently that Virtual Desktop works much much better in my experience. Not that it's the only measure, but I'm getting about 25% more frames through VD in SkyrimVR. During all of this modding I learned that some people gain close to those numbers on top of VD by using it with OpenComposite. That program allows you to run SteamVR games through the Oculus app instead. It's as simple as clicking a button within the program to go right back to SteamVR. I haven't actually gotten that one working for Skyrim yet. I think it's a path issue.

In any games make sure to switch off dynamic resolution. Instead check an FPS overlay. The oculus debug tool actually has one of my favorites, as it lets you easily see if you have any headroom available above your current framerate. From there adjust the picture setting quality, or adjust the HZ. Find a match between those. If you get motion sick apparently you should prioritize the framerate.

That takes me to another option - ASW. This basically runs the HMD at 45fps with a synthetic frame inserted to allow it to portray a constant 90fps. I avoided this since I had some issues with it in the past with an older PC. At this point though it seems like there's little drawback, so it might actually be worth cranking some graphics settings as long as you can stay above that 45fps mark.

Within Steam there's a pretty neat movement app I'm trying out - VRocker. It basically allows you to move by walking or running in place by detecting patterned movement of your headset. It works surprisingly well, though it helps to rock a little. You can adjust input sensitivities and inertia to get it to feel right. There are presets for common games, and I haven't done much to mine other than turn the sensitivity down just a tad and use the left joystick as a movement trigger.

A pretty neat device that seems to potentially pair well with that is the DecaMove. This is a device you clip on your waist and basically allows your torso to be independent from your head in the game. This means that while you use the previous app to move, you can look around with your HMD without disrupting your walking direction. I'd probably just buy one for the $80, but they're OOS and there's no waitlist. They do have a free app to use your phone as the device. That works pretty well all on its own, so maybe the actual device isn't even necessary.

Maybe check both of those out before jumping into something like a katvr. The rub with all of that is VRocker won't work with OpenComposite.

Anyone have experience with Bigscreen? How well does it work to share a live tv to users on just a Q2? I assume with I would be able to share a screen from my PC, regardless what it is (including live TV) using virtual desktop.

Similarly, is that also possible within Golf+? It seems like you can cast to the TVs at least within the Topgolf facility. Anyone have luck with that?

#196 2 years ago

Got them both working. Way easier than I thought!

I'm assuming you subscribe to cable or is that feed of the game from another source? Looks cool!

Yeah, I have Spectrum cable and watched via their web streaming. I thought it was limited to the topgolf facility, but turns out you can watch on the course, too. I need to 3d print and assemble a club attachment for this game though, it feels a little off with just the controller.

I switched from the top stock to the bottom. The top utilizes magnets to release the controllers from the iron pipe. It works OK, but even the 90lb magnet on the back would rock with the wrong type of movement, and using a pistol, throwing a grenade etc was pretty unintuitive and clunky. Trying to glide in pop1 was a pain, and trying to find the gun after dropping to the sling was a challenge.

The bottom one is the noolaki design, and really solves all of those problems. Your dominant controller is locked in, but the front end is light and short enough that you can go about normal movement without much worry. The support hand just uses the front piece for support, and never locks in. Simple design that works really well.

I had been looking for something like this for a long time. Drafting a space in VR seems like it would be so intuitive, but all of the design apps before lacked physical measurements to make anything buildable. This might be how I design my next house.

That looks really cool. How are the in app purchases looking?

Good question, really unclear so far. I played around with it a bit last night. The pass-through mode has some serious potential to map out an existing layout. I'll have to mess around with it some more.

I've been playing Demeo with a couple of friends, that's a pretty cool experience, and allows for crossplay with flat-screen normies.

Solid deal! I already own it (haven't played it yet), but may just grab it for gift potential. Also I love some super meat boy, and haven't played forever yet.

UploadVR showcase was this morning:

Anyone try Vox Machinae or World of Mechs? A mech game in VR seems like it would do really well. I'm mostly interested in multiplayer since I have a couple of friends that finally took the dive.

I'm also wondering about an MMO, Township Tale, Orbus, or Zenith. I played Zenith solo for a bit on release and was underwhelmed, but there's an update coming shortly and maybe the experience is better with friends.

I was actually getting pretty interested until the 1500 price tag.

The good news is it brings a lot of really interesting tech forward for possible implementation into the Q3. The controllers alone with their independent tracking is really interesting.

The avatar availability to devs is a pretty big deal too. I've recently gotten some friends into VR, and getting associative avatars into a common space would be cool.

I've been beating the drum of the ability to share music/tv within apps like Eleven or Walkabout. Being able to watch sports or at least listen to the same music would really enhance those experiences. Alternatively, just a few simple passive activities within Bigscreen would be great. The ability to throw some darts, play bag toss, play cards, or anything similar would really help to create a bit more of a hangout within that app.

I bought Half Life Alyx, downloaded the Half Life 2 VR mod, keep intending to set up my virtual pinball for VR use... Just never actually get to it.

Alyx is so good. I still need to finish it out. I hear HL2 is also really good, I bet the gravity gun works really well in VR.

I'm in the same boat with the virtual pinball stuff. I'm actually working on it now, but I'm not having a great time getting it to launch correctly.

Quoted from FatPanda:

Quest Pro is for office/work usage. Quest 3 is for gaming and will be next year, in the 300-500 range. Just gotta wait a little longer for the "gaming" version. With that said, I haven't touched my Q2 in a good 6 months. I think Walking Dead 2 will bring me back in though.

Did you bail on the sim racing, or just move to flat screen?

If you haven't checked it out, Golf+ has some of that functionality.

Golf+ worked for a while, but it's really unstable. Last I checked about a month ago the browser was completely non-functional for media, I was even having trouble with youtube. It's not my favorite game, but it would get a ton of play in my group if they could get that sorted. I've submitted tickets to their discord, but they don't seem terribly interested in fixing it.

That's what I have. Can confirm it takes up a lot of space, roughly as much as a pin. I haven't used mine a ton lately either. I burn hot on hobbies, but I tend to revisit somewhat frequently. The Squadrons game is the last I've really put in some cockpit time. Every time I play that I tell myself I need to jump in more often. There are just some barriers to setup that prevent quick hits, and that's mostly all I have time for these days.

#258 1 year ago
Quoted from DudeRegular:

The reasons you guys are outlining are the same things I think of. Pinball is great, because I can turn it on and hit start. I barely play multiplayer games these days because I can't pause. Getting VR or a wheel or a joystick out and setup, then fiddling with calibration or settings..... Ease of use would help with these things. I guess if I could have a cockpit set up all the time maybe that would help, but that is valuable pinball space as it stands right now...

Mine is setup all the time to a degree, but there are steps I need to take to get it going. The more awesome the setup, the more stuff to start, configurations to align, etc.

The hobby itself is pretty consuming. I really haven't spent any significant time on it since I've had kids. I could see myself diving into it pretty heavy as a retirement hobby. Until I have blocks of uninterrupted time available to me on a recurring basis, it's just going to be tinkering and messing around, mostly.

Zero chance I get a PS5 and corresponding PSVR2, but I hope it does really well. Things are really, really stale right now. Everything positive that's happening in VR on the software side is being pulled kicking and screaming by the community. We definitely need something to spark the interest of developers again.

My kids got me an Oculus 2 a couple of years ago, but other than standing-still games like beat saber, moving games just make me sick. I've tried all the solutions to help but it just doesn't work for me so I kind of gave up on it.
This year I decided to pull it out again to see if I could watch some 3d movies on it (I am still surprised there isn't a 3d movie rental service) and since I couldn't find any I started looking around (pun) and picked up a couple of stand-still things like Adam Savage's series where you get to be inside his workshop watching him build.
Poking around Steam VR, I noticed a post about the old Fallout 4 having a "jump" mode in addition to a smooth movement mode. I picked it up for cheap and it has solved my problem! using the left thumbstick to jump forward about 5 feet at a time is a slow process but it allows me to revisit this classic immersive game. I am loving it.
I noticed Borderlands 2VR also has a "teleport" option so I might give that a try as well.

Check out the mods for fallout, the community did a great job integrating the lazy Bethesda ports.

I haven't touched my oculus rift s in about 6 months and even then I wasn't using it very long (played that kayaking game which looks great but not a lot to do). I think it's two tiered:
1. The software just isn't as good as hoped. That kayaking game for instance, why couldn't they include a game like toobin' where I have to paddle away from objects and recoup from waterfalls?
2. VR is very closed off. If you have family, you might as well not be home. My hope is that as augmented VR takes off it'll be more like playing a video game (you'll be focused, but you can easily swap between the virtual world and the real world).

The actual standalone software ended up being pretty shallow, agreed. Lots of fun to he had though even in games like eleven and walkabout.

Walkabout is a better social experience because it's more casual, and you're not necessarily competing directly. I've gone mini golfing somewhat recently, and actually prefer the VR version.

Compete against a friend one-on-one in eleven and it can lose its fun pretty quick, especially with a skill gap. Most of those types of games would really benefit from a distraction, like a real working TV or at least shared music. It just feels weirdly intimate and distant all at the same time.

The death of echo vr is a big bummer. I never got too deep into the game, but it was a really good example of what vr could be. Same with superhot... how fun would that be in a coop setting? So many of those early promising games just never took off.

Hopefully we're seeing a second wave with the new hardware. Right now I use it for solo eleven and some bigscreen to watch some key sporting events with friends. A different group was running some demeo but that's fallen off.

I've had the itch to get back in and finish out some of the fan supported pcvr ports. It's really impressive, but the isolation makes it tough to keep up with any lengthy solo games.

I'd kill for a functional deck of cards and some poker chips in bigscreen. Being able to host a virtual poker night and watch some college football would be amazing.

Quoted from DudeRegular:Those 49" screens are pretty cool for sure. Unfortunately that would be two full pinball slots if I went with a cockpit as my 15' wall fits 6 games just right.
I was thinking I could maybe just use my desk in combination with one of these:
https://nextlevelracing.com/products/racing-wheel-stand-2-0/
Right now I have dual 27" monitors. I could swap those for something bigger and then dual use the screen at least. I know I didn't like sitting in a cockpit with a swing out tray for keyboard and mouse for regular pc use or gaming when I had the Obutto setup.
My office chair is an Aeron which is pretty comfortable. The only thing with the wheel stand is the chair could still swivel. Not sure there is much to be done about that. Some folks say it doesn't move too much since you have your hands on the wheel.

I've been thinking about ditching the full cockpit for a desk setup too. Mine doesn't take a space a pin could use, but it doesn't get used very often and it's just awkward to have sitting there.

I wonder if you could lift the front wheels of an office desk over that metal plate/lip on the stand you linked to stop yourself from pushing away from the pedals. Maybe fab a bracket to set the seat distance.

I have a hard time Wondering why the wedding is over within a year ..the fitness ones are good for me alone as I enter my elder years.

If you have a PC you can get a lot of use out of it, especially if you're into sim stuff. A lot of the standalone stuff feels tech-demoey, or unfinished/shallow versions of flat screen games. There's good stuff, but unfortunately not a ton.

My buddies have motion issues, which really hindered a lot of the stuff we could play. And there's a good chunk I'm just not interested in playing without friends.

It's really cool tech. I still use it, but not as often as I did. I'm really waiting to see an influx of some new stuff. Even basic things would be great. One of the biggest social uses for me now is bigscreen to watch sports with friends.

Have you guys tried out the UEVR mod yet? A ton of games are supported. I tried the newer Pinball FX and its pretty cool. I still haven't got around to setting up VR on my VPin so this was an easier step. Fire up the game from steam, make sure oculus is running with steam vr. Then open UEVR and inject. Boom, fully 3d pinball right in front of you. Played with an xbox controller.
That is about the only use I have had for my quest in quite some time. I have bought a bunch of PC games to use with it, just never get around to actually playing them.

I read a bit about it, but didn't event think about pinball fx. Thanks for the idea, gonna give it a go.

Looks pretty disappointing. I'm glad they're in the market, but the full-time wearable angle they took looks like a big miss. I don't see anything to suggest there's really any sort of gaming influence so far, which is my only interest in the space.

At this point we're saturated with viable and affordable hardware, we need software. I'm still astonished that some really basic and practical use cases have little to no representation.

I picked up a Q3. It's pretty clear to me that Oculus is winning the hardware war at this point, at least in terms of games and versatility. My main driver was a desire to return to sim racing. I configured my rig to accept 4 corner transducers over the winter. After finally completing that I was just bothered by the the Q2 resolution. The increased resolution has been worth the upgrade, and I notice things are a lot snappier/clearer in general in standalone.

Still really blown away with the Q3, especially how much I'm using it. I didn't really expect to see a huge increase in (PCVR) use, but this and the steam deck (casual couch gaming) are where my time has gone.

As expected, getting some of the games/mods setup is still a bit of a pain. I've been playing a lot, here are some of my highlights:

- Skyrim VR - My biggest issue here is that I left off pretty deep in the game. The problem is that my mod list became relatively unstable last I played (but not gamebreaking). Since my last play there's been quite a few changes to some things. My advice is to just go the Wabbajack FUS route if you want to get into this one, and don't start tinkering. That came about as the mainstream option after I started my game, but I wish I would have started over sooner.

- iRacing - I got my bass transducers setup on all 4 corners and tuned up. I have my wheel (OSW) pretty well setup. I resubbed to the service. I ran a few laps. It's fantastic. There's some blurriness on the horizon that's bugging me, which has set me into some tinkering sessions. The actual racing has been fun, but challenging. I was targeting the Porsche Cup, and turned a few laps. That seems pretty manageable, but it would take a bit to be able to run a full race without incident. I might divert into something with shorter sessions, or even Oval while I get settled in. I've also considered just dropping the service for now and trying something like Assetto Corsa to just get some consistency down.

- American Truck Sim - I got this on a deep sale a long time ago. It's probably not for everyone, but it's a lot of fun with the rig and VR combo. I made a few visual/control tweaks, but spent a few hours last night just hauling loads and listening to the built-in real radio stations (even turning the dial with my button box). I actually looked forward to getting back into the rig tonight to run some more, but I got distracted with the next one..

- Portal 2 - This is a relatively new mod. People have been talking about this for years, but all agreed that it would be a barf simulator. Turns out that's not at all the case. Granted, I have some pretty sturdy VR legs, but I was able to get this mod up and running within a few minutes, and spent the next 3+ hours picking up my mid-late stage save file from years ago. I'm going to finish this out in VR for sure. I got to the final chapter, and I'll probably give it another at some point. The game looked fantastic, and played flawlessly for me. I think this is one of those top-end "wow" VR experiences for me.

- Half-Life 2 VR - This is another mod, but this one I believe is getting a dedicated release. I only gave this a quick check but it looked great, and seems like it would control well.

- Star Wars Squadrons - definitely in that top tier of VR experiences for me (with the HOTAS). The trouble is the menus suck and multiplayer is pretty dead. It's actually infuriating because if my peripherals get mucked up, I literally can't navigate menus. It becomes this really specific dance where I have to d/c them all, get to where I need to be, and then slot them into the right in-game equivalent. It's way more difficult than it sounds. I don't know what I did to knock it out of my preferred setting, but this isn't the first time.

I jumped between some other familiar favorites, Thrill of the Fight, Demeo, Beat Saber, Superhot.

I tried to get back into Outer Wilds, but I'm having issues getting the VR to trigger. That's one I'll need to troubleshoot. Probably the next one after I complete Portal 2.

I tried UEVR, specifically Pinball FX. I got it to load and then it crashed upon a button press. I've seen some others experience the issue and sounds like there's a new version I may need to grab. There wasn't a lot else that grabbed my attention.

I'm kicking around getting into No Man's Sky or Elite Dangerous. The latter I played a bit in VR and had some fun. It was daunting, and I had more time then. My biggest barrier back then with the original Rift was that the text fatigued my eyes. I don't think that would be an issue anymore. I have a solid dual Gladiator NXT setup, so running something with HOSAS/HOTAS is on my radar.

I actually have a bit of a backlog at this point, with other story games like Firewatch, Jedi Academy, HL Alyx and Asgard's Wrath 2. My hope is that these things keep me busy until we see some more advancements in software.
