I don't see a club for this yet, so I thought it was worth creating.

I purchased an Oculus Rift a couple of months ago. I thought it was a gimmick until I experienced it at Pinball Expo last year. I couldn't believe how good it actually looked. I finally got off the ledge when I moved. I setup my office with multiple monitors that I robbed from my racing simulator. Now I was in a position to either purchase new monitors for my sim.... or... or I could finally make the leap into VR.

I did the latter. The first experience in the default Oculus intro is pretty incredible. I couldn't believe how well it worked, and I had a grin on my face every second. Here are some of my favorite games so far:

Superhot - this is a must. It works incredibly well in VR. Time moves when you move. I recommend a bit of space for this one.
Echo Arena - This one is free on rift, and very fun. There's a definite learning curve. It's basically tron/ultimate frisbee in 0g.
Echo Combat (beta)- Like Echo Arena, it's in 0g, but you have weapons and are trying to escort a payload.
Robo Recall - A shooter that makes you feel like a badass. Reach to your hip for a sidearm, or over your shoulder for a long gun. This one looks pretty incredible, and is free with Oculus (touch?).
Elite:Dangerous - This is a space flight sim that is best played with a HOTAS. I spent a lot of time playing around with controls. It definitely takes a while to get this setup to be playable in VR, but the experience of landing in a space station is one of the most memorable experiences I've had in gaming.

I've taken a sort of hiatus lately. I'm still trying to get settled in my new home, and just don't have time to setup my racing rig or have my hours sucked into games right now.

question is where is VR Pinball from stern arcade? Promised but never given to us!

Hey thank you for posting this. I bought a HTC Vive Pro a few months back but just got it running a couple weeks ago. I have played a few hours with it with various steam games like DoomVR, Pablo (shooter), John Wick, Super Hot, and a Zombie shooter.

Also, thanks for the game suggestions, going to check out a few of them when I get a chance. I can only play so long due to motion sickness, but the time I did have is usually fun.

I'm curious to know what other VR players are using to manage thier headset cable.

#5 5 years ago

Motion sickness seems to be related to locomotion systems in games. I feel like when you get a handle on controls that leaves. Unfortunately some of the games I recommended are oculus exclusive (I think) which is an annoying but necessary problem with VR.

I tried using a cable management system I found on amazon for roughly 20. It's basically several retractable key rings, and over sized o-rings to accept the cables. It works ok, but getting the cables twisted above your head or around your body isnt much better than around your feet at the end of the day. I might play with it a little more, but I think VR desperately needs wireless.

#6 5 years ago

I've owned a PSVR for a month or two now and really enjoy it. Tracking is not as good as Oculus or Vive, but I've not had many issues (unlike some others I've read). It was a MUCH cheaper entry into VR for me since I didn't have a PC capable of VR. PSVR was super simple to setup and just one cable to deal with. The headset is the most comfortable of the systems I've tried (Oculus, Gear VR).

I'm pretty impressed with first gen VR and hope it sticks around, because it will obviously only get better. Love Super hot, Rec Room (free!), Sparc (A simple but fun online game), Star Trek Bridge Crew, Moss. As far as PS4 exclusives go, I want to love Resident Evil 7 but I'm too scared to get very far (loser, lol), Wipeout VR is awesome, and there is a new online FPS that just came out this week which is getting a ton of praise called Firewall Zero Hour. Oh, and on the pinball front Pinball FX2 VR is great!

I don't regret my decision to buy it at all.

#7 5 years ago

PSVR here.

Highlights:
-Rogue One VR mission (Battlefront)- this is what I dreamed VR would be like!
-Farpoint with Aim controller- tense, atmospheric, but the feel of handling the weapon is superb
-Vector Invaders- basically a classic 80s arcade game in VR

The directional “3D” audio is an unexpectedly amazing feature of VR

I really wanted to love Pinball FX, but the resolution of current Gen VR is too low for immersive photorealistic experiences. The games that work best have sparse/nondetailed environments ie Rez, VR Invaders, Battlezone etc

My wishlist for next gen VR:
1. High res display
2. Wireless ( though I wonder if input lag would be prohibitive)
3. Wider field of vision

My computer is finally VR ready, and oculus rift is pretty affordable but I'm looking for that WOW game to make the jump. Following.

Great post. Following here too! I have a mobile Virtual Pinball rig that I use when I go to parties and such. Mostly run PinballFX3 and some TPA.

Following for sure! Cheers!

We've had our HTC Vive for about a year and a half now, and while there is a definite wow factor with VR when you first get it, I've been pretty disappointed with the games that have been released to date. Most games are extremely shallow and have one objective.

I'd love to see a large game studio give us a truly immersive game that was created with VR in mind, and not bolted on to some existing game. I know Valve has some things coming in the future, but they're typically so slow that my VR headset will likely be out of date when it finally gets released.

To me, most games aren't worth playing unless they were created for VR, specifically. The exceptions to that are simulator-type games that have some sort of peripheral attachment (driving or flight sims).

VR design seems to be really challenging. There are so many minute things in traditional games that become burdensome in VR.

I'm glad to see Valve is a player, but it's also probable that I won't be able to experience those games since I don't have the correct hardware.

My first exposure to modern VR was when Bonnevil69 brought his Vive setup over to TheNoTrashCougar (yes, I'm name dropping, deal with it [insert gif]) place for a P-ROC meetup. I hadn't really seen VR since the terrible 90s super blocky, super laggy VR.

I only played the bow & arrow game in the lab, and that was enough. Modern VR was officially 'dope' as the kids used to say when I was a kid. I wanted some VR of my own, but I didn't have a gaming quality PC of any kind. I did have a PS4 though, so I got the PSVR since it was a cheap way in to playing VR stuff.

The PSVR was more impressive than I expected it would be. The tracking isn't TOO terrible, and there's a bunch of great games for it (Statik, Job Simulator, the shooting gallery on the "Worlds" disc London Heist, etc) and I was having a good time at my low entry price point. Then I played Super Hot and that was my first real 'holy crap this is amazing' gaming experience -- but not without flaws. The throwing of items on the PSVR is sketchy at best (hot tip for PSVR payers strugging in super hot, do it more like a 'push' than a 'throw') and the fact that you couldn't REALLY move around much before falling out of the tracking was a downer. From that point I knew I wanted to upgrade to a PC 'room scale' setup whenever I could get the money together.

A few months back I built a PC from the ground up with pretty beefy specs and got a vive pro (yeah yeah, the pro is too expensive, whatever the whole thing was less than a pinball machine) and we set it up in our theater room. The place space is like 10 feet x 13 feet, which is fantastic in games that let you move around. The tracking is dead on 99.9% of the time. No wobble like the PSVR is prone to, and the freedom to move is amazing.

The biggest hit on the Vive at our house is Beat Saber. If you haven't played that, you must.

I've been a gamer since Pong. Always loved arcades, had every home console, and had gotten pretty jaded about gaming. I love modern VR.

I just re-read my last post, and it came out pretty negative. VR is pretty damn cool, and there are some fun games. Just wish there were more.

If you like platform/action games I'd really recommend 'Moss' - but wait for it to go on sale as it's pretty short for the price. Really cool game though.

Till 4 in the morning every night I've been playing firewall on psvr this week.

It's so much fun.

I love my psvr. Waiting till Halloween to play through re7

I keep debating buying it, but considering it's $80 with the aim controller I keep second guessing it.

I love VR. I have the PSVR, and plan on an Occ or HIVE eventually. I love Pinball FX on the PSVR one. I am a big virtual/video pinball fan as it is, so thi sis just the next level.

#21 5 years ago

Another free oculus game (there's actually a lot of value in free games) is Lucky's Tale. It's another platformer, and does really well to show that VR can do more than just 1st person stuff. It was a good enough game that it got a non-vr release.

Brass Tactics is also free to try, I believe. It's a RTS game, and provides proof of concept for RTS in VR at minimum. I've only popped in to give it a try, but it gets great reviews.

#22 5 years ago

Oh hey, this thread is another place I can get some mileage out of this:

"The Armics" from TNA in Beat Saber. Wanted to play around with making a custom beat map. That happened.

#23 5 years ago

I can't imagine enjoying having weighted crap strapped to my head and face and enjoying the experience.

I tried it once for 5 minutes, and was surprised by how neat the demo and illusion was -- but I was very happy to get the crap off my face, and go back to the real world...

I wonder if VR will ever be possible without all the crap strapped on.

Awesome! I've played the preloaded songs, but haven't really looked into adding in new stuff. Is it pretty simple? Is there a single location to grab them all?

It's ridiculously easy. You just need to get the ModManger from here: https://github.com/Umbranoxio/BeatSaberModInstaller/releases

Run that, and it will set up your game with the plugins needed (the ones it defaults to installing are the only required ones), then there's an in-game interface to this: https://beatsaver.com - where you can search and download songs right in the game.

I don't know, maybe I don't know what I want. I'm sort of wanting a demo to come out where I go "wow, I gotta play that!". Some games that look interesting to me:
Rec room
Mission ISS and Adrift look neat

Are there any like theme park VR games?
What are the best racing sims, I usually end up gravitating towards those when I buy the next console.

Good to see someone has started a thread on VR.

I'm very new to it. Bought a VR rig from Amazon under the iBuyPower moniker, which given how much we pay for NIB pinball, a gaming rig was about 1/3 NIB pinball prices. I went with Vive; I wanted to go Vive Pro, but nearly $1500 for just the VR hardware was a bit steep.

My current rig is here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BDTTQ1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

For cable management, I use a tethering system to keep the cables out of the way. You can buy it here:

https://www.amazon.com/Retractable-Management-Headset-MDW-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/ref=sr_1_1

Works great. Only trouble I sometimes have is reaching over the shoulder for the the shotgun in RoboRecall, but honestly, I rarely use them. The pistols are the way to go - so far.

To keep heat down, I ordered a pair of these:

https://www.vivenchill.com/

They work fantastically and is a overall simple - albeit kind of clunky - install. The fans go on with 2x sided 3M tape that is already installed on one side for you. I found I needed to hold the fans for about 2 minutes whil the tape really adhered to the headset. After that, no real issues.

YT review can be viewed here:

As for games, I have amassed a small but decent collection. I love the horror/shock-value games, so my collection consists of games:

Arizona Sunshine
Dead Effect 2
Don't Knock Twice
Doom
Duck Season
Insanity VR: Last Score
Paranormal Activity

I want to play Exorcist: Legion - that junk looks intense, and The Sinner: Prologue looks amazing (and free), but I have enough for now.

For people brand new to VR who have never experienced it, we have a couple fun lil' games to help people dip their toes in the VR world such as:

Audioshield
The Lab
Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades
NVIDIA VR Funhouse
Robo Recall (all Oculous Rift games can be played with Vive through a program called "Revive")

I am also experimenting with Virtual Desktop. It may sound weird, but when you have your desktop on VR, and you "come out", being on your laptop/desktop is all of a sudden very boring.

I have played around with 360 deg videos on YT, which are fun if the resolution is solid enough. Rollercoaster videos are a blast to experience. Still working on 3D videos and watching full length movies in BigScreen.

If you're buying through Steam, wait until they have their summer or winter Steam sale. Normally two weeks each, you can get some crazy good prices if you're patient. I bought Doom 2016 for like $15. I don't mind posting here when they announce it. The prices really are amazing when they drop that sale.

Glad to see some other people here in VR. It can seem a bit lonely/out there as VR hasn't REALLY caught on yet. The price is just too high for the "everyday guy" to drop $2000-$3000 just to buy the rig and gear needed to thoroughly enjoy it. Once you are in though, it is a blast!

Virtuality games form the 90s seemed so amazing back then. Now, woof...but they were a preview of what was to come!

#28 5 years ago
Quoted from NPO:

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades

I picked this up too, looking for a shooting gallery like the ones in London Heist -- it's not that; it's more of a hyper accurate gun simulator. It's cool for what it is, but not what i was really looking for. Still trying to find a good, high production value, arcade-ish shooting gallery. Not a 'wave shooter' like there are so many of, just something like the London Heist with the 4 different 'game' style shooting galleries with score.

I already had an aim.

It really makes it something special. Once in a while there will be drift but I feel it's worth it.

Its a great experience especially when the whole team is communicating and start getting tactical

#30 5 years ago

blindfire and peaking around corners never felt so awesome

#31 5 years ago

I've played this for a few hours. It's cool in its own way. It's free. I like paintball enough, but the movement system can be a little frustrating. You can "cast" your character to a position, and then you're locked in that position for 2-3 seconds. You can still lean/duck, etc, but it makes moving around the map a little tough. It solves a problem, where you would otherwise be able to teleport yourself to avoid being shot, and also avoid motion sickness from directional movement. It's worth trying, but not a reason I'd buy a set, personally. It reminds me of wii bowling and those types of entry games.

Quoted from toyotaboy:

Mission ISS and Adrift look neat

Lone Echo is one of the top tier games available. Check out some of the reviews/video for that, but be careful of spoilers. I haven't played it, but I have played Echo Arena and Echo Combat, which are based on Lone Echo. Both Arena and Combat are pretty incredible, and I highly recommend them. I will be buying Lone Echo as soon as it goes on sale.

Quoted from toyotaboy:

I don't think it gets any better than iRacing for realism. It's the main reason I got VR in the first place, and I've yet to experience it (lots of setup to do in the new house). Your opponents are other humans using their actual names. You progress in 2 different ways - 1) by safety rating, you earn your licenses and can compete in higher tiered events, and 2) irating places you in a group of a similar skill set. It's one of the best systems I've seen to keep things fair. People aren't going to ram you going into a turn, because if they do they can lose their license. It's a very thorough simulator, you can get as deep into racing as you want. I've read books on professional race car tuning to better tune cars for myself and others - something I enjoy playing around with.

For a lighter experience, I hear that Project Cars is very good.

Tried a new game last night called “in death”. It’s a really interesting archer game. Procedurally generated castle to survive through.

Worth checking out if archery mechanics in vr interest you.

No Limits Roller Coasters 2 is a great theme park simulator, with a huge amount of well-done coasters by the community, as well as some complete parks you can actually walk around in and ride all the rides. I demoed it for some friends that had never tried VR and they were pretty blown away by it.

Best racing sims are iRacing and Project Cars. I wasn't all that impressed with Asetto Corsa, and the interface in Project Cars 2 was so bad in VR that I ended up refunding it (somehow they made the menu worse than the first Project Cars, and that is an accomplishment. At least the driving in Project Cars 1 is good, though).

Also, official Vive wireless adapter is coming out in a few weeks, so I'll be picking up one of those for sure.

Friend has the vive setup. keeps trying to get me to buy one.

He’s been on Elite dangerous for months now. 3-6 hrs a night. it must have some lvl of depth.

Only other title he’s really mentioned is barfight. Guess his 12 yr old daughters are big into that.

#37 5 years ago

Yeah, once I started playing Elite Dangerous, I pretty much stopped playing (or doing) anything else, and my friends wondered why they stopped seeing me around.

It's not even an unusual amount of time devoted to the game. Much like Skyrim or WOW, you can pretty much clock out of reality for long periods. Oh, and Skyrim also supports VR now.

Next-gen VR headsets are right around the corner. The reviews of the Pimax 8k and 5k+ headsets are pretty positive, and the wildcard is the Star VR headset. All of these are running higher resolution and a FOV that can be as high as 200 degrees. I've held off on the Vive Pro and the Windows MR headsets in anticipation of this next gen technology. Will need to upgrade my PC, though.

Oh yeah. The Pimax 5k+ seems very impressive and the reviews so far are excellent for it. It's interesting to hear people say that they prefer the 5k+ over the 8k model. Apparently both accept 1440p signals but the 8k model does not accept a native 4k connection which makes the 8k feature seem a bit worthless. Hopefully both models will be available to preorder soon.

I can't wait for next gen headsets, like the 5k+, that offer a huge FOV and higher resolution screens. The relatively low FOV of today's headsets are my biggest VR complain. I think the Oculus Rift, Vive, Oculus Go, and Vive Pro will all seem a bit older after these newer headsets are out.

Also, Oculus Connect 5 is next week. Maybe Oculus will finally reveal plans to bring a new next gen headset to market?

For those of you who have PSVR and like platformers... You MUST get Astro Bot. Quite possibly my favorite VR game yet. So well done...

#46 5 years ago

astro bot is amazing, im still playing firewall, I just started playing re7 for the first time for the holiday, and borderlands 2 vr gets randomly announced for psvr today.

life is good in the psvr world

honestly I can not wait for tetris effect, I love me some rez and lumines

#47 5 years ago

I have the vive, but I'm jealous of Astro Bot on the PSVR, seems like an amazing game.

I've been playing Stern Pinball Arcade on the Vive, it's actually an Oculus exclusive so it's quite janky on the Vive (I can't even buy tables) but I still really enjoy it. Purist will definitely be put off by the physics, but it still amazes me that I get to play pinball in VR and I really like it. It's much better than the Gear version which I played once and gave up on.

Ghost Busters is set up way too easy for some reason though so I got to see all the wizards modes, etc., in one game. It was kind of fun but I have no urge to play it again now (at least until they make it more difficult). Games like High Roller Casino really benefit from the 3D of VR and Mustang and ACDC are much more fun for me in VR than they were in the Xbox version. Anyway, it's free to download and try so it's worth a shot for anyone with a PCVR setup.

I really enjoy my PSVR. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is absolutely jaw dropping and a showcase for anyone on the fence.

Batman and Resident Evil are also fantastic. My family knows I’m playing Resident Evil because of the screaming.
