I have a Mitsubishi LT-5V linear tracking vertical(!) turntable which I haven't used for years. I'd be willing to sell it (or maybe trade for a pin), but I have no idea what it's worth.
The photo is representative, not my actual unit.

Does anyone here have or have heard of a brand of speakers called "SARAS"? I remember seeing a demonstration for them once, and they had a fabulous sound. I believe they were made in California in a small factory run by a guy who's son became a world-class beach volleyball player. Stoklos was their name.

Have these reel to reel machines for sale.
    Pioneer RT-1020L
    Tandberg 9000X
    Akai GX280DSS (quadraphonic)
The Pioneer and Tandberg work well. The Akai can somewhat play, but needs serious repair.
Cosmetically, all are very clean and generally very nice. The Tandberg is missing a small knob.
PM me for any further information or questions.

I also have one of these for sale, but it will probably need a total overhaul. It's all there, but has sat idle for a long time.

    Quoted from Jason43:

Got my first SACD in the mail today. Let it bleed by the Stones. It's a hybrid, so you can switch back and forth between the cd and sacd layers. It's pretty noticeable how much better the sacd format sounds over cd. I get the hype...

I only have two which came free with a Pioneer DVD player I bought years ago. It has SACD playback capability. They are Steely Dan "Gaucho", and Donald Fagen "The Nightfly". Each have different format types. "The Nightfly" has graphics, and a bonus video of "New Frontier" (which sounds like crap). The "Gaucho" disc sounds awesome, but it's difficult to navigate. Some groups of tracks play; others do not. I've heard a Doors SACD, and it was phenomenal! I'd like to get a few more of them.

I was really fortunate to find these in great cosmetic condition about 16 months ago. They were a little jacked up as far as the wiring, and I had to replace one of the midrange drivers. I was really lucky to find one locally for $50. I redid the jacked up wiring, and installed the midrange driver. Power hogs, and a difficult amplifier load, but they sound great. I've yet to try them with the Hafler DH-220 that I picked up at Pinfest from @electricsquirrel. Oh, they're Infinity Quantum 3s. Mirror-imaged pair. A friend of mine has a rather nicked up pair, (as well as my original Quantum 5s), and his are not mirror-imaged.

A couple of late '70s Sherwood receivers. Both are in great condition. Have the original box and outer carton for the S-9910, which I bought new back in the day.

My trusty TEAC A-2300S reel to reel deck. They made a zillion of these. Robust, solid, and great sounding basic RTR. It was a filthy mess with a totally seized pinch roller lever when I got it for $40. Fixed it up, and I love it!

    Quoted from guitarded:

On a cassette deck, I would have to see the mech. On a R2R, I usually use a small torch and heat the seized shaft. Tht grease in there gets like concrete but a little expansion and the seized arm usually slides right off.

I used a heat gun. Yup. Grease turns to glue. Same with the Tandberg deck I repaired. Had to dissolve and scrape off a lot of old, hardened grease, and relube.

    #405 1 year ago
    Quoted from ZNET:

How much heat and for how long? Blow dryer heat? What's the repair technique? I have a seized pinch roller or some similar issue with a cassette deck. Thanks.

Each case is different. I would think that on a cassette deck, the linkages and metal parts are much smaller and lighter, so I think maybe a soldering iron would do the trick.
Believe me, I was really concerned with using heat gun on my TEAC, but even with a lot of heat, it took a lot of twisting and pulling to get the lever off the pivot shaft. I saw the repair procedure on YouTube. It was a different TEAC model, but they're all very similar in construction.

    Quoted from hlaj78:

I have the exact same Sherwood receiver also purchased by me new back in the day. I always wanted a reel to reel to go with my system. Tomorrow, I will try to remember to get a picture of the whole set-up.

My brother in law bought one at the same time and same place that I bought mine. Oddly, mine has a heat sink on the back and his did not. It doesn't look like it was missing from his; just never there.

Just a small portion of my 40 year HiFi collection. 99% untouched over the last 20 years. More recapping than I will ever get around to. Send PM if any one would like a tour. Cash or trades

Love my Maggies! I found them for sale shortly after buying my Infinity Q3s, and I just can't get enough of them. My Denon amp is relieved as well! Constantly resistive 5 ohm load. The amp barely gets warm running these.
They're MG IICs, about 30 years old. Still sound great!
If you've never heard Magnepans, you just don't know!

Sold my Pioneer RT-1020L reel to reel deck, and my Mitsubishi LT-5V turntable. Hopefully the new owners will give them some love.

Oh, and also sold my Akai GX-280DSS reel to reel deck.
It was clean, but in need of much repair. Hopefully it'll be brought back to life.

    Quoted from reynolds531:

Any Sherwood fans out there? I started with a 7200 way back in the early '70s. I now have this S-110CP. This was Sherwood's "monster' receiver that was similar to the 9910 from 1980. This the last of the receivers made in Japan. After that they were made in Korea. The CP meant "certified performance" and came with a factory performance spec sheet. Lots of inputs including two phonos that allow high and low impedance cartridges. The tuner is superb. This is my favourite vintage receiver.

A reprise of an earlier post by me.

Did the S-110CP replace the S-9910? They look identical.
My S-9910 did come with a certificate of performance, but does not have the CP designation which later models by Sherwood carried.
It could be the reason I got it at a major discount. The hi-fi store I bought it from was blowing them out. I believe that it was originally a $750 unit, and they were selling them for $369. My brother-in-law, who was with me at the time, also bought one. Oddly, mine has a rear heat sink, and his did not. They served us well for years. I still have mine, but don't use it anymore. It still looks like new. I believe my brother got the one my brother-in-law originally bought.
He had to have it serviced, but I believe he uses it occasionally.

    Quoted from radium:

My uncle gave me a a pair of Pioneer CS-99A. We had a pair of these too growing up but lost them in Hurricane Katrina. I remember loving the sound.
Unfortunately bugs chewed the midrange cones. One speaker has several holes in both mids, the other has a single hole in one cone. I want to try repairing them or have them repaired professionally.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

You might be able to patch up the holes reasonably well yourself using small bits of paper towel and clear nail polish. The sound shouldn't be terribly affected with that type of repair.

    #529 1 year ago
    Quoted from mbwalker:

Is the surround material foam? If so, doesn't that turn to dust after awhile?

    That's another issue altogether.
It appears that they are intact; probably butyl rubber or other material.
There are repair kits available for rotted out foam surrounds. I have a friend who has repaired several pairs of speakers with the repair kits.

    #532 1 year ago
    Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

Yep. I’ve refoamed my Advent Loudspeakers and some AR-2s; huge improvement

I have a pair of Baby Advents which are in great condition otherwise, but the foam surrounds are shot. Same with a pair of Infinity RSes that my wife bought before we were married.
I have other speakers, but someday I just might enlist my buddy to refoam both of those pairs for me.

    #536 1 year ago
    Quoted from Sputnik:

The speakers I have refoamed the kits came from Simply Speakers.

Yup. That's where my buddy gets his kits.

Not much. This was past the prime for Infinity's home audio speakers. The Quantum and Kappa series were their best ones.
Of course if you can find a Servo-Statik system (from their early days), you really have something!

    Quoted from Jason43:

Snagged this for free from Facebook marketplace.
    [quoted image][quoted image]

Does it work? These Akai units are built well, but often the motor run capacitor needs to be replaced. You won't find an original one anywhere, but there are workarounds.
Often, they will play at normal speed for several minutes, then the speed will slow. It's not a belt or mechanical issue as one might be led to think. It's a failing motor run capacitor.

    #551 12 months ago
    Quoted from Jason43:

Play seems to run at FF speeds,

The pinch roller is likely not engaging the capstan. I have a TEAC which had a completely frozen pinch roller lever, and it did just that. It allowed me to get it cheap, but the repair required me to use a heat gun to soften the old grease. It's working great now though.
Yes, many of those older Akai units were built in two or three versions; with and without a built in amp and speakers.
I looked up your unit, and was surprised to see that it weighs over 60 pounds!

    #553 12 months ago
    Quoted from Jason43:

    He's a chunky boy.
The pinch roller is moving over and engaging the capstan when I hit play. Although, I don't know if it's engaged properly. Is the speed regulated by the capstan/pinch roller?
And dumb question: I'm testing without a tape on the player. Is a tape necessary to get it playing at the correct speed?

In "play" mode, the take up reel will spin at a high speed without a tape. That's normal. The speed of the pinch roller and capstan regulate the passage of the tape past the heads and onto the take up reel. With a tape loaded, the take up reel will maintain proper tension, and will turn only as fast as the capstan allows the tape to move.

    #555 12 months ago
    Quoted from Jason43:

Gotcha. Looks like I need to find a tape then. Appreciate all your help so far.

The voice coil needs to be accurately centered otherwise it can be damaged.

Long journey, but I finally got to the end.
The advent speakers I couldn’t give away and was going to toss, I refoamed. Came out great and they sound awesome.
Bought a pl-200 turntable off fbook marketplace and that was a mess despite guy swearing it worked, but hadn’t been used in a while. Took it apart and cleaned it, adjusted pitch and put a new stylus and cartridge on it.
Lastly, and most importantly, I picked up a marantz 2220b. Seller said it worked and was recently serviced. That was bs. It played for a minute and then cut off. Would come on erratically and cut off and finally would not come back on. Worked with a friend and we determined it was the input transistors on the amp board that prevented the protection circuit from working. Replaced those this morning and it sings.
