Here are a few of mine. SAE solid state systems from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Large speakers are Altec Lansing Model 19. Other large speakers are JBL 4435 Studio Monitors.

My 2100L died years ago. I am still using my 2401 power amp (250w). No moving parts except the on/off button.

My god, what a large and impressive rack you have!
Any recommendations on a two channel stereo integrated tube amp that has Bluetooth and a set of speakers to go along with it all? I once heard a McIntosh set up with some Martin Logan electrostatics that sounded amazing at a local Magnolia store. A phono option in the future is a possibility. Budget of under 10 thousand. Thanks.

I wonder how many times Dolly Parton has heard that.

Macintosh has been bought and sold so many times that the modern Mac gear has nothing in common with the legendary Mac gear that made them so famous, the new stuff is all made in China. It's still good gear but the prices are insane and there is better out there for the money.
Make a trip to Deja Vu Audio in Vienna, VA. Well worth the trip. They are masters of all things tube and have outstanding gear and customer service. They sell a brand called "Synthesis: Art in Music" that makes wonderful integrated tube amps. They sell a lot of Audio Note speakers which match exceptionally well to the Synthesis gear. You should easily be under $10,000. They also sell Conrad Johnson, Harbeth, Jolida and they make breathtaking gear from vintage Western Electric parts that are unrivaled.
Here is some of my vintage gear:
-Marantz 2235B powering the speakers for the TV in the family room
-Vector Research VRX9000 powering the speakers in the pinball room
Micro Seiki BL51 turntable with SME 3009V2 tonearm and Ortofon 2M Black cartridge which is played on my home theater setup
-Garrard 301 in a custom plinth with Ortofon TA-110 arm and Ortofon Quintet Bronze cartridge. This fuels my tube 2-channel setup.

Love the Garrard 301 (I have a TD124 on custom plinth). What transformer/pre-amp are you using with the Ortofon MC cartridge?
9548539D-BA4A-4703-869F-0ECC06700207 (resized).jpegI have added a Nakamichi LX-3 two-head cassette deck to my bedroom equipment cluster. I'm impressed with it so far.
The Energy RC10 speakers are extremely efficient, especially given their compact size and inexpensive cost. The vintage headphones are Sennheiser HD424.
20201019_142201 (resized).jpg20201019_142223 (resized).jpg20201019_142241 (resized).jpgSomeone directed me to this post. I have a thread on pfs that I have kept running for a couple years so I dont browse around. I am so excited to see all of the brothers and sisters who share the love for audio.
I am sure everyone knows how you go thru phases, and I am going thru one this year. it all started with that marantz 4240. The sound blew mw away but on my paradigm 6000's it dosent have enough power and I was going to destroy those speakers.
I am looking for a 4300 or a 4370 so if anyone has one....
In the last 6 weeks I got a set of Von Schweikert VR4 speakers, and they changed everything for me. I have always had nice speakers but these are a diffrenet level that I didnt know was even possible. I run them with 2 adcom amps a 555 and a 545. The smaller 545 (100wpc@8) runs my top cabs and the 555 runs my base cabs. If you dont know these speakers they are each 2 modules and each module has its own input/crossover.
I use a parasound p5 pre.
When I have time I am looking forward to hooking up my Dynakit 70 to the top end of the speakers, and keep the 555 on the bottom. I am still in the process of tuning or moving, I am not sure what you call it. My listening room is 24x36, but my spot is at about 12 feet from the speakers. I am really interested to see how the old dynakit sounds. its a beautiful amp, but I have not tested it yet.
I want to set of a casual sound system upstairs, and I have the equipment, at least to start with, but I am waiting for 2 pins to get picked up, so I will have room up there.
I am willing to sell or trade my 4240. its a great reciever and amazing sound. Its just not powerful enough for the speakers I run.
Looking forward to reading 4 more pages of this thread!!

I really dig that bob carver equipment, and there is a really cool upgrade for the pre that I want to tackle. I was super lucky to run across the set for sale. I didnt need the amp, but actually you can always use another amp!
Lastly some pics of the von schwiekerts. I feel like i am showing off, but I am actually just excited to read about others that share really one of my greatest joys right now

Love that Adcom gear. Have had a bunch of it over the years and it is always reliable and great sounding stuff.
Been meaning to get my Scott 299B recapped as well...and my Dragon rebuilt.
so much gear.

I really want one of those Carver C-1 preamps! They generally are pricey so if you found those for a good deal you are lucky. I need one in all black to match up with this Carver AV-405 amp I have had since I bought it new long ago. You can buy brand new remade black faceplates. Also there is a guy not too far from where I live that does the BillD mod for $150, I might just pay him to do it because I am too lazy.
I also would like to match these up with a retro black tuner, maybe something like a Sansui TU-666, those look pretty cool.
I think I paid market on that carver equip. 800 out the door. he had it priced at 899 plus tax which is 6% here. The BillD mod is the one that I want, and I think I would be better off having someone do the mod for me at that price, if he is experienced in doing it! sounds awesome.I like how many carver fans there are out there, and how much info is available. Lastly I do love equipment made in N America.
On the adcom purchase, it came with the tuner like it or not. So if anyone is looking for that tuner i will let it go or trade very reasonable. I have never had that 555 pre, but what attracted me is it has 2 outputs.one lab and one normal. The parasound p5 pre I have is the best sounding I have ever had. I realize it is not vintage. it has both bal and unbal in and outs, but what I really like is it has gain control on the outputs. It is a 2.1 so it has an output for the sub with gain as well as adjustment for the crossover. I have learned on pre amps to go straight to the back of the unit.
Does anyone know of a link to a site that explains info on the dynakits and the differences between the different models?

I would search on AudioKarma and on Vinyl Engine...
if you don't find a quick answer, post an inquiry on the forums and you will get directed to it in short order.

Gorgeous Thorens!!
I use a Synthesis ROMA79DC as the phono preamp for my Ortofon cartridge. It is amazing.

Here is the guy who does the BillD mod, I've been following him on eBay for a while and he seems reputable. he is in Corona California which is a plus for me because I could drive it over there and not have to pay the shipping.
I really like the normal gray faceplate of the c1, but that black looks awesome. I make shipping crates for my pfs, and anything I clear has to get shipped in a crate. I can see how it would apply to audio equipment. All it takes on one bad handler and you looses something that is not made any more.
I design the crates to be just big enough to hold 1 or 2 pfs and the packing, and I make them with typical handling impacts in mind. I worked at UPS for 2 christmas seasons as a truck loader, way back when I was in college in the 1980's. Good life experience.
After moving recently, I am getting around to setting up my vintage stereo system in my downstairs game room. When testing the turntable, the left side speaker output doesn’t work even when I switch the speaker that wire goes to. I also tried switching the feed from the main (A) output to the remote (B) and had the same results. The amplifier is a Sherwood s-702 CP that I purchased brand new in 1980. Any suggestions on the source of the problem?
Swap the right/left phono inputs into the amp. If the sound moves to the other speaker, the problem is a dead left signal from the TT. If it stays the same, the problem is with the left channel circuit in the amp.
Love my Realistic Sta-2080, 80 Watt. One of the last great analog receiver's. Sold from about 1981 to 1984.
Realistc was the House brand for Radio Shack. So, often overlooked by vintage collectors.

I just stumbled upon this thread, man some of you guys have some high end equipment. Makes me jelly. Before pinball I was dabbling in HIFI a little. I currently have a Pioneer SX-1010 paired with a set of CS-99A. Also a Kyocera DA-610 with remote and manual. All in great shape. I have a Realistic STA-2000D in the workshop paired with the Realistic Nova-10's. I also have 2 pairs of Mach Ones. One pair very nice and the other I plan to restore.
In the past had:
Pioneer SX-980
Pioneer SX-1050
Realistic STA-2100
Kenwood KA-750?
Hitachi, don't remember model
BTW, does anybody do tuner alignments anymore? Metro Phila area to be specific.

Agreed! I forgot I had this one as well. The STA-2000 has an awesome tuner and great stereo separation compared to todays crap.
Here's my first vintage reciever.
SANSUI QRX- 5500. Quad, of course.
I bought it in 2013 as I cleared the deck's of my garage for the delivery of my first 3 Pin's.
Space Invaders, Zenon, and Vector.
I picked up 2 sets of mid 70's Sansui speakers, not very good individually, but the four together sound great.
I believe the 5500 is only rated at 15 or 20 Watts in 4ch. But it must be WAY underrated, because it fucking Roars!

Had a Marantz 4230 quad that was broken. I sold it to someone that could fix it.
This thread is making me realize how bad my memory is lol.
I also had technics su 7100 amp and a st 7300 tuner. A Pioneer 9100 amp. Kyocera receiver with the remote control unit that was separate.

The Sansui is super nice. Funny how all those old receivers didn't seem to have high wattage ratings, but when you play them, they seem to have plenty of power.

Tons of grip. Those old units just plain manhandle speakers.

Wattage is incredibly overrated. Speaker efficiency matters far more. Sure there are some very inefficient speakers that require massive amounts of power to drive but they are not particularly common or affordable. I have heard 3-watt tube setups with 91db sensitivity speakers (which is efficient but not super efficient) that are louder than you would ever want at half power. For the most part wattage is marketing.
Someone told me once that old equipment was rated by how much continuous power it put out, but the peak power was much higher. Manufacturers started advertising peak power in later years because it sounded better, but that equipment could only put out peak power for a small burst. Not sure if that is true or not.

It is very true. When you see a modern receiver rated at 100 watts per channel it is likely capable of doing that for a fraction of a second with awful distortion and noise before blowing. The only wattage number that is relevant is the continuous number.

Is continuous power the same as rms? Root mean square
my old school stereo has 85 watts RMS 20-20,000 hz both channels driven and THD less than .025%
That new stuff is 100 watts is most like peak power with 1% or more thd 1 channel driven,
because the power supply cant produce 100Watts of continuous power
Quoted from Lovef2k:Is continuous power the same as rms? Root mean square
Yes they are the same.
so here is one of the advantages of living alone, and one of the MANY advantages of not having kids. I found this Steelcase desk and table from the 50's and the desk is in my office and I had no use for this table. I turned it in to my hi fi/lo-fi table. Its 2 in thick of solid hickory. I am going to put a 3 in hole in the center for the cords to go down and put the monster power source on a table under the table, as well as records. I have just started putting this together. The idea is to have everything all ready cabled, so I can pull a few and plug a few and new configuration. even though there are 2 nice pre amps on the table right now, I am using the marantz 4270 as a pre to my dynakit st70 cat fryer.
As you can see I have the 4270's lil sister 4240 next to it. I have had that a couple years while looking for the 4270, not for the extra power but simply because it has pre amp out plugs. I want to sell or trade the 4240. which is a quad, or simulated quad (with a dimension knob). One of my favorite parts of these rigs is they made the dolby system totally manual. so it has the levels for both play and rec L and R. It is originally for you to set your dolby levels perfectly for your equipment. I use it along with the simulated dimension to really mess with the sound stage. These receivers are so amazing and hi quality. They have an amazing sound that I fine tune depending on what I am listening to, and thru what.
You can look up the owners manual and read about the dolby system as well as the rest of the bells and whistles. I prefer a midrange knob also. If Guitarted didnt hook me up with the 4270, I would never sell this receiver. If you look at the pic of the 2 together you can see the 4240 has new led lamps that I had installed. As soon as I bought it I took it in for it to be gone thru, and replace some caps and other little stuff. The Marantz blue is super rich in the eve with the tubes of my cat fryer over in the corner.
Not to brag or be a butthole, but this is my fun gear. down stairs I have my real system to enjoy devil trombones and angel harps. The room is 18x36 I use 2 adcom 555's to power my Von Schweikert VR4's. I am a goofy emotional type of person, but its easy for me to come to tears listening down there.
I am looking for a nice turntable (less than a grand) and I am kicking around some tube preamp ideas if you have anything you want to sell or trade for sound equipment of pfs. I have about 70 new/nos pfs plus I clear them. The preamp I am using downstairs now is a parasound p5. I have never used a tube pre. I am soo blown away by the incredible top end and vocals of my tube amp that it makes me wonder how a tubed pre will sound. Anyone have something to suggest from experience?
IMG_1952 (resized).JPGIMG_1953 (1) (resized).JPGIMG_1954 (1) (resized).JPGIMG_1956 (1) (resized).JPGIMG_1957 (resized).JPGIMG_1958 (resized).JPGIMG_1959 (resized).JPGIMG_1960 (resized).JPGIMG_1961 (resized).JPGIMG_1962 (resized).JPGI just picked up a
AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 Compact Disc CD player - Marantz CD4000 - Vacuum Tube Output
It came with the tjo up sampling board. Its a marantz player that a company in europe tweeked out and turned it in to a tube output DAC. There are a lot of tweeks I can do to it besides different tubes. I am new to tube equipment and sound, but I like it so much. I was looking at different TT's when I ran across this and I had read about it like 20 years ago, so I grabbed it. My life would be pretty good if I can get a cd player that produced a sound I enjoy since 90% of my music is that source. I still want to get a new TT.
If you have or had one of these I would love to hear your experience, and suggestions. I all ready know the pins on the up sample card are fragile because they came broken and I need to repair.
here is a link to the auction I won. I love the seller. They throw so much sweet equipment on ebay that is all trade in stuff. Sometimes, well actually often they have some really sweet old stuff. I missed an audio research pre amp by 20 bucks last week. grrrrr.
My system dating from 1979:
Marantz 2285B receiver
RTR series II D speakers
Akai GXC-750D cassette deck
Technics SL-1700 turn table
I sold a 78' Camaro Z28 and turned the cash into the system, then picked up a 75' Monte Carlo with the change.
A couple of questions:
Has anyone replaced the volume and balance pots on a Marantz? If so, are there any part numbers that can be shared?
Who are the reputable receiver refurbishment shops? Preferably near SE Michigan.
I would like to know how the RTR's rate.
I also have a DBX #100 Sub harmonic synthesizer. Any one ever heard of or used one?
The photos were grabbed from the net. My apologies if I'm breaking any rules.
Yes, the foam on the woofers looks blown.
Doug D.
