I think I've read this thread several times trying plan my restoration but I'm hung up on something I don't think I've seen covered yet. Take a look at this Stellar Wars, how do you handle areas like this with all of the speckling and irregular edges? All of the planets and the space background are covered in it.

Part of me thinks it is almost better to crete an overlay with newer looking ships and graphics like some of the re-themed games have done, but I'd like to save that as a last resort.

I can see using decals for small bounded areas and using a small brush for touchups, but what is a good consistant method for very large areas? I've seen people use toothbrushes for arcade machines to match the blue splatter on pacman cabinets, but it does not give consistent spot sizes.

Quoted from vid1900:

If the paint was solid, you could clean it up with Magic Eraser first, but if it's all flaky, you've got to lock down what you've got.

I always thought the most important part of painting was a well attached bottom layer. If the paint is flaking and loose, it seems like it would compromise all layers on top of it.

Is this the SYS9/SYS11 problem you are talking about?

http://www.hsapinball.com/HSA_PINBALL/SYS9SYS11.html

Note that they say you can fix the problem by following Vid's suggestions of re-gluing plastics, sanding to take off the insert art/clear/sanding lines, seal with clear, and re-decal the insert art. They just won't do it and think waterslide decals are cheating.

Quoted from beelzeboob:

Where the hell do you buy a giant horse syringe

I get them at Tractor Supply Company (http://www.tractorsupply.com/), looks like the closest one to you is in Flanders NJ. I buy them there and use them without the needle for caulking.

Quoted from sethbenjamin:

http://www.treasurecovepinball.com/shooter-lane-repair.htm
Dear GOD.
Personally, I can live with a bit of discoloration in the shooter lane - certainly preferable to distorting it irreparably!
Curious to know if anyone has used Cliffy's shooter lane protectors. Every game gets worn in that same spot, seems like sort of a no-brainer, assuming they fit properly. I've had good experiences with all the Cliffys I've used so far.

Did you see the important note about halfway down that page? They admit that the repair technique is outdated. That note should be at the top of their page.

NOTE: This shooter lane repair was done almost 9 yrs ago. Nowadays, if we have a shooter lane with this much wear, we would just lightly sand the area, then fill over with wood filler, then paint with a wood tone, lacquer and then apply a mylar patch. As you can see in these photos, we took off way too much wood .. you want the area to remain original, ... so a light sand, fill, paint is the way to go.
