Not sure why this would offend anyone! A huge heartfelt thanks to all Veterans. We all should remember for what all those lives have lost - this country's freedom - both now and in the future.

That Iwo Jima memorial is something else. A year or two ago, I brought my son, age 7 there along with my wife and mom & dad. The Honor Flight Network happened to be there bringing a whole busload of veterans to visit the memorial (and others around DC). Had to look up that group; they are legit.
Talked with some of the organizers and some of the veterans themselves. Had expectations, especially from the WWII guys, but...wow they blew my mind with how open and appreciative they were. I'm not going to go into it, but it was absolutely not the veteran grunt stereotype. These guys were not messing around. Progress, progress, progress.

My Dad was a National Guard member mobilized from Greensboro. He spent most of the War at the top of Trinidad with cannons aimed at the Bay. Toward the end they were all sent to Germany, going from Tropical heat to freezing winter.
They were marched through snow 3 miles to take a shower, he told me it was so cold they were all running, taking 20 second shaves.
He got silent when I asked him if he killed someone.
The stories he told of trinidad facinated me as a child. There was a Leper colony at the base of the mountain, they went there often to drink and party with the natives.
When one of the girls put a shirt on (since all of them went topless) all of the guys went for her, it was "Sexy"
Yeah, if something happens now that requires a massive mobilisation we may be in trouble.
The previous Generation was bad. No joke.

I was younger, stronger and better looking than I am today. But I still love my country!

My late Dad, on leave in 1944. Served on the USS Bennington {CV-20} in the South Pacific as a Carpenter's Mate. His loyal dog was waiting for him. His two younger sisters pictured are still with us.

Greatest generation of Americans. Many of these men loved their country, their families so much they lied to recruiters to join their fellow Americans during WWll. We have witnessed no time before or since where American Patriotism was so great. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I'm not questioning anyone's love for their country or their Patriotism especially all who served and will serve. I love my country and was proud to serve as I know you were but our fathers, our grandfathers were a different breed of men, sacrifice and service to country and family was a way of life not just an option they could choose. I thank God everyday for men like my father and your fathers they represented what made this country "The Greatest Nation on Earth" and set an example at least for me to serve and protect the freedoms they so casually defended with their lives.

The lack of a database allowed him to enlist at 17. He told me the story how he and four of his friends all went to the processing station to enlist. His four friends were all deemed 4F for physical reasons. He was accepted and went off to Great Lakes Naval Station.

My Father home right after WW2.

He was drafted and training before the US got involved. Shipped to Africa. First engagement with the Germans and Vichy French out of around 280 men in his unit, only him and an officer were all that were left. He was then in Sicily, Italy, then France. I don't know if he was in Germany. He was there until the end.

He never talked about it. Bits and pieces I got from relatives or friends many years ago.

Thank you Father and all Veterans !
