    Quoted from GamerRick:

I measured for you. Pinball Brothers Alien: Backbox is tapered. 8” deep at the top, 7” deep at the bottom, 27 9/16” wide. The cabinet is 52” long and 25” wide. A Stern backbox is 8” deep square and 28” wide. I hope this helps.

Huge help, thank you. Do you know height of the cabinet compared to Stern? For instance, a stern folded down, compared to a PB folded down against the cabinet itself?

If Alien backbox is 8" at the deepest, how many inches would the cabinet add at its deepest?

    #2152 74 days ago

Welcome! The cabinet is classic design, same size as Stern and tapered in same way. So I am guessing the overall height with backbox down is one inch less than Stern because the thinnest part of the backbox is on the bottom which would be at the thickest part when folded down. That one inch is huge Sterns just barely miss fitting in multiple vehicles. It’s definitely smaller.

I just picked up a JJP Hobbit with a QX80. Fit without any issues.

Looking for suggestions - I'm going to be in the market for a new vehicle and I want basically the smallest one that will fit a pin. The pinwiki page has gotten out of date, doesn't list anything newer than about 2014, and sizes change too often across newer model years to go by anything there.

Does anyone have recommendations for anything in the hatchback / station-wagon class that would fit one? I'm thinking only about modern Sterns and maybe Williams, not any weird sizes.

Anyone have experience with a Kia Soul of recent model years? If that works, that's probably my leading choice. Or a Corolla Cross if that works. Any other suggestions?

Honda HRV for the win. Can get it in AWD, cheap (relatively in todays market), great gas mileage, Honda reliability, and can fit a pin.

Haven’t been able to confirm the latest model ‘22/‘23, but previous to that you’re good.

The Honda Fit is good too, but feels very small when driving it.

    Quoted from Sensei:

2019 Chevy Traverse fits any pin just fine. Hauled several in it now. Even room for 2nd row passenger still.

I think the 2019 and the 2017 Chev Traverse are the same. We have a 17.

What is the height of the trunk opening?

    Thanks

The HRV changed significantly with the latest revision, I would not assume it holds a pin unless someone goes out and measures or just tries it.

Forwards or backwards. System 11 fits in the 22 Bronco Sport Outer Banks edition.

    Quoted from Adaminski:

It's time to give back. Here is the promised photo documentation of my first pinball machine move with a 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness edition. It was a Wonka LE (29.75" max height x 28.75" wide x ~54" long, including the shooter), and I had a friend with a lot of pin moving experience helping me. I removed the cargo tray and the rear seat protector (both made out of a thermoplastic, I think) and had to use a moving blanket to slide the Wonka over the boundary where the rear seats fold down. We also had a moving blanket protecting the rear bumper as we slid the pin in. The fit is tight where the seatbelt holder drops near the rear right, but it fits OK.
Really enjoying this vehicle and love the color. It's likely my last gas car. Would have liked the RAV4 hybrid, but couldn't reconcile the local $5k markup by dealers when I think that hybrids will be replaced by all electric sooner than I'm ready for my next car in 5-7 years.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Thanks. I have a 2017 forester, hoping the opening and cargo specs are the same.

    #2161 69 days ago

WPC superpin went in the 2021 Honda CR-V hybrid just fine. Should be the same for any '20 through '22 hybrid.

I'm pretty sure it should be the same for non-hybrid gen 5 CR-Vs '17 through '22. The hybrid has its cargo floor fixed at the level that is the upper adjustable level on standard models.

This was also sitting on 2x4s so there is plenty room to spare. Obviously the rear seats are folded down.

2016 Chevrolet Traverse was perfect for a modern Stern. Fit perfectly with an inch to spare.

I think that confirms any Traverse is a good buy for pinball.

I have never transported a JPP game, so I am not sure. I think the key is going to be using as thin of protection under the head as possible.

Is there a list of current model hybrids or full electric vehicles that fit pins? Looking to buy a new SUV soon but want to make sure I can move a game with it.

all tesla's won't fit a folded stern , only 28.0 inches of opening , need about 30 in min

I don't think it'll be a very long list. For some reason as they update the design on these SUVs, it comes at the expense of rear hatch clearance

I can tell you that it will not fit into a 2020 or later Toyota Highlander Hybrid (29" clearance max)

    Quoted from Petes0281:

2020 BMW X3 barely fits a Taxi pin. Back hatch had to stay open about 8 inches. Tied the hatch so it wouldn't fully open and made it home safe 1 hr away.

Just did this same trip. Back hatch is open with zero leg room AND with the head disconnected.

    2018 Mazda CX-5.

JJP Toy Story would NOT fit, (by fractions of an inch..so close!)
Head needed to be unbolted from hinges (but not removed) and then it managed to fit.

3 Wpc games, one head has to be removed in an 2004 suburban….

    Quoted from blastbeat:

Not sure if mentioned...Kia Telluride fit a pin fine. Moved a couple B/W titles with room to spare (2020/21 can't remember wife got it when they first came out).
Also 2019 Tahoe LT do fit but I had to take top plastic trim off (pops off). It may have made it but started to scrape and I just popped the top trim off temporarily.

Long story short: 2019 Tahoe will fit a pinball machine once the rear storage tray is removed.

I've owned a Traverse for the past 9 years and both the 2012 and the 2018 fit pins perfectly. We wanted a little bigger vehicle so we bought a 2019 Tahoe. I started my 2 hour drive to get a pin the other day and thought the Tahoe should have at least the same size opening as the Traverse, if not bigger. I was wrong. With the plastic piece around where the power cord plugs into the backbox, the Stern would not fit. Fortunately I read a previous post that recommended taking the plastic storage tray out. It takes no time to remove and there is plenty of room once it is removed.

    Quoted from schudel5:

Just picked up a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT. This should also apply for the 2015 as well since it's the same design.
The good news is the width and length of the rear cargo area is the same (4'x8'). The not so good news is the height of the opening into the back has been reduced by 4". The third row seat is now bolted to the floor (non-removable). So, to make the loading area flat, they added this plastic wedge shaped storage bin that's as high as the folded up third row seats. This makes the effective load height right at 32" to get it into the rear cargo area. The problem is getting it in the opening. Once inside, there is 36" of height from the headliner to the loading floor.
Luckily you can remove this storage bin by lifting out the liner and removing the two large bolts holding it to the floor. This gives you 36" of clearance to get the game into the back area, but the third row seat is at 36" from the opening; so you'll have to lift the game up on the top of the folder rear seats and push the game in. You could unbolt and remove the rear seats from the floor but it's not something you'd want to do with any regularity.
Leaving the storage bin in place is not an issue with most standard DMD games I've measured most at 29" folded up. But games like Safecracker and Banzai Run will have to have the rear cargo tray removed as they are too tall (SC at 32.5") to get into the opening.

I have in a 2020 (same). It is a tad tight w/ the headlinder but slides in. only issue is pulling it out and getting it the 1/2" up to get over the lip.

A new boxed Stern will easily fit in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with hardtop.

My little HRV recently picked up a Dr. Who and a Hollywood Heat (not at the same time haha).

Previously had only hauled newer and classic Sterns so was relieved they both easily fit.

What model year HR-V is this? I'm looking to get one to fit a pin, but all the small SUVs constantly get different redesigns year to year, particularly around the loading hatch area.

Nope, CX-9 has a very small opening due to the rear curvature of the hatch. Hopefully the CX-70/90 will be better....

Can you just unbolt the head, slide it back so that the cab slides in first, then tilt the head inside? I had to do that with my Deadpool but it was better than having to disconnect everything.

Same question, they had older models on the list but not the new ones

2021 Ford Explorer XLT incoming. I don’t get a choice of company cars, but I’m hopeful based on previous posts that this will be able to fit DMD/LCD era Sterns

My wife is thinking about getting a Hyundai Santa Fa. I'm not sure if they make a sub model like a "sport or limited." I have a pickup but would love to have a vehicle that gets better fuel economy for trips where we just pickup one game. I don't want to remove the heads so WPC games and other current models would have to fit. Anyone have info on this SUV would be great. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2014 Santa Fe Sport. Fits all pins except for DMD Gottlieb's. ^_^

So i saw one question about this in the topic, but no answer: Will a Mitsubishi Outlander fit a pin? Asking because it's one of the new vehicles I'm looking into possibly getting.

    Quoted from girloveswaffles:

If it's been asked before but not answered, and since it's not a super-popular model here in the States I'd suggest you are most likely going to have to go measure one yourself (and report back your findings of course).

    #2199 30 days ago

I re-post this occasionally for information as people sometimes don't want to read through pages and pages of posts:

The space needed for most pinball games is about 31 inches. My 2012 Grand Cherokee has 30.75" clearance and a Stern Spiderman just fits...probably an 1/8" clearance if I remember correctly.

The issue with the 31" measurement is the lip at the bottom of the opening. In my Jeep, the lip is about 1/4" above the floor, but in some vehicles it can be an inch high.

What makes this measurement tricky is that the lip is usually not directly below the opening edge at the top. So measuring at an angle (lip to top) gives a deceiving number, that is this measurement is larger than the actual opening.

If it's important to be able to put a pinball in the back and the opening is about 31", some consideration needs to be taken in the height of the lip above the floor and where the lip is in relation to the opening edge at the top.

Remember that the pinball game needs to ride on the lip while it slides into the back, and it only drops down to floor level after it passes the lip. In my experience, it's the last 2 or 3 inches of sliding the game in when the game is still on the lip and the head is starting to approach the opening edge at the top.

To those wanting to know about a certain vehicle, it may already be in this thread.

So to find out if info on a vehicle exists:

    1. Go to the top of the page and click on the "Find in Topic" line.
    2. Then enter "your vehicle"
    3. Hit "Find"

    You may be rewarded...
