Variety pinball resets to beginning just like pushing red button to start a new game. Does this every time. First push is normal. Second push is normal and will advance features. 3rd push resets to beginning. Also if you only push the red button once and shoot the first ball, after the ball clears the top playfield switch, the machine will automatically advance the features just like pushing the red button a second time.

the playfield shutter should not close until you shoot the first ball. If it closes and you push the red button, the game resets.

sounds like you have a problem with shutter motor cam 5A switch. Make sure it's adjusted properly - in this case you do NOT want the middle/moving blade to be touching both surround blade contacts at the same time as the switch is changing state. i.e. the moving blade should disconnect from one blade before connecting to the other.

I finally got to pull the playfield off and get a better look inside.....some one had wired the red play button up for free games and wired it to one of the shutter motor switches....when it hit the playfield switch it was running the second credit on the game......not sure why it would reset to the beginning after pushing the red button the 3rd time before shooting the first ball, but removing the jumper wires fixed that issue as well.....now it works properly
