All -

Does someone have a written "Theory of Operation" for a Vari-Target system in a Gottlieb EM (particularly College Queens). Right now, after starting a game, both Vari-Target reset coils lock on (the ones on the assemblies themselves). The Vari Target reset relay is not enabled.

As a result, the vari targets do not register anything. If I manually trip the Vari-Target Reset Relay on the motor board, the target coils release. I can then score points with either one, and when the reset relay releases the individual coils on the target assemblies lock back on and will not work.

I am really not exactly sure what is supposed to happen in sequence (should any of the coils be locked on all the time, etc.). OR...something like a startup sequence:

1) Ball 1 ejected in shooter lane and all coils related to Vari Target are off.
2) Ball strikes Vari Target, energizing the Right VariTarget score relay
3) Vari Target score relay, through score motor switch 2A, enables VariTarget reset relay

Thanks in advance -

I think the Vari Target Release relay should only fire momentarily. If it's locking on there's not much that could be doing that. This is from Mini Cycle, the year after College Queens:

Could the switch on your Z/Vari Target Reset relay be gapped too close so the Release relay is on most of the time?

Here’s a little video and a pic from the college queens schematic...

Fixed! The "reset" position on the vari-target scoring wiper was the issue. Cleaned and adjusted the stops (Todd Tuckey did a video on this) and everything is good. Now I understand what the stepper-looking switch is on the Vari Target Reset relay path on the schematic does.

Thanks all for taking a look.
