Quoted from pinmister:

Wow I have never seen such a tight staircase with someone trying to get a pinball machine down it. Looks like a tight(like a tiger) European spiral staircase. I understand now why you would have to take off the backbox. You still should not have to remove the playfield. If it were me I would try and temporarily remove a couple of the 2x4 safety pillars in middle instead of taking the machine apart? If the 2x4 are non structural it may work-hard to tell what is holding those stairs up(can frame in from below). -Good luck

We just made it down with the game an hour ago, it went fine, carried the cabinet and playfield separately. It was the right choice for sure as we had to angle the cabinet up way past 45 degrees to get around the central columns in the stairwell. The weight of the playfield would have made that quite an uncomfortable journey.

My takeaway is that one shouldn't be afraid to remove the playfield if the removed weight will make the move easier, it wasn't that big of a deal to me. Having it carried down separately by two people was way easier than leaving it in the cabinet ever would have been.

And yes indeed, these are some European style stairs, the house is built in 1968 so it's probably narrower than what would generally be built today.

That is so damn cool, I would have loved to shake his hand, his artwork is legendary to say the least.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure he wouldn't sign that translite.

I know almost nothing about Maiden and the art etc. Did he not draw it? Just the creator of the character? Man I would have embarrassed myself!

Correct. Riggs did not do the artwork on the pinball. Would be cool to get him to sign something else and put that on the game though.

Where do I find the key posts for tweaks and adjustments that should be done on a new game?

There are key posts at the top of the page when you are in this topic.

You shouldn't have to make too many tweaks to a new game, the ball guide for the shooter lane might be the only one.

My game is set up and we got our first newbie games in, the lady and I.

A couple of things I need to take care of as a follow up:

1. I stripped the threads on one of the leg bolts, I then saw that the bracket inside the cabinet didn't have nearly as much of a threaded section as the other legs, so no wonder it failed way before any real torque was reached. Can anyone tell me what the thread size is for the leg bolts? I want to order some nuts to place on all the leg bolts as extra security.

2. The playfield glass reflections are just horrid, is there anywhere in the EU where I can get a replacement glass with a good anti reflective coating?

3. Are there any additional lighting kits / mods out there that I could install to light up the middle section of playfield better? I thought it was way too dark.

There is a setting to turn off the backglass lights or turn them down, during your ball. Think bolts are 3/8" thread.

I’m a little confused which hole on this pic is the one that controls adjustment of flipper angle the one on the side or one on the bottom of both shown… I forget which one it is thank you ; or if anyone please explain what both holes do would be awesome appreciated

Loosen this screw on the crank just enough so you can turn the flipper bat on the other side. When you get the bat where you want it, tighten this up again TIGHT. If it's too loose, the flipper bat will drift as you play it.

Quoted from dino69:

Hello friends, my new toy arrived today and I found foam on the ramps. This foam has deformed the plastics, leaving them separated. What solution do you recommend?
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Did you end up with a solution for this yet? I have the exact same problem with the plastics being warped, and there are even micro cracks around the screw that was closest to the foams on the Icarus side. I might have to give my retailer a call unless there was some other simple solution to be had...

#14264 11 months ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

There's been talk of issues with the maiden passage behind the anubis to the ball lock on the prem/le catching the ball on the switch so it won't complete the trip, sometimes to often leaving the ball stuck behind the playfield. After taking it apart, I think it's just a case of sloppy engineering.
On mine, the switch is catching because it's dragging on the left side (from the back) of the channel cut in the plastic for the switch.
[quoted image]
Stern has added a spacer, but it's not enough. The switch is nowhere close to centered in the hole.
[quoted image]
There are only two nuts to remove to free the switch and get it moved over.
[quoted image]
In the end, I 3D printed a spacer to stack with the Stern one and put it back together.
[quoted image]
Problem solved.
It's a very simple shape, just a square with two screw holes if you have the means to make and print it yourself. If you don't have a printer, I'm going to put the spacer in the pinmonk store for $0.00 so you can add it to any order for other things and I'll just send you one with your order if you want to fix your maiden in the same way.
Here are the screws you need to remove to get this channel out to fix it:
[quoted image]
This is what the spacer looks like:[quoted image]

Most excellent post, I’ve had this exact same issue, made myself the same fix as you have, yet I still occasionally get the ball stuck behind Anubis
I’ve removed the tilt mechanism, so I just shake the machine to release the ball into the sarcophagus
Any other tips to eliminate this issue completely?

If you have the switch arm dead-center now with a spacer, then the switch arm may be too high or the angle on your machine's playfield (pitch) may be too shallow.

#14266 11 months ago

The switch arm is dead centre, probs not wanting to adjust the arm height, but I’ll increase the pitch of the playfield to be a little steeper
I generally leave all my games with the leg levellers flush, I’ll increase the back legs to be a bit higher for Maiden though
Thx for the tips!

I just got rid of the switch all together and replaced it with an MRS switch stuck to the underside of the exit of the trough. Works perfectly now and the ball never gets stuck.

I did the same. I ended up putting the switch where shown in the pic. It’s right under where the ball stops behind the mummy head plastic. 100% reliable for several weeks and not a single hang up in the tomb. You can get a switch from Sonic

I didn’t end up putting mine where the original switch was but I found a good spot parallel with the exit of the ball trough that registers for me 100% of the time. Highly recommend the switch for anyone having issues. It’s adhesive backed and comes with the connector installed so you just have to unplug the old one, stick this in your preferred spot and plug it in. Super easy and you don’t have to worry about the ball getting stuck ever again.

A couple of questions of varying character now that I've had my game for a few days;

1. There is sometimes a loud pop sound, quite similar to shooting a cork out of a champagne bottle, and about as loud, that occurs sometimes. I haven't quite pinpointed when but it seems to be after a drain when the Eddie air fighter graphic is playing, not entirely sure about this though. Anyone know what this is about?

2. Me being a complete pinball newbie - what do the "90" "00" etc numbers at the end of the game mean?

3. I managed to shoot the ball from the center ramp over to the sarcophagus without passing the left ramp, did I correctly hear the announcer go "DIRTY POOL!"?

4. Can you replace the speakers in the game with anything else that fits dimension-wise? I would like to upgrade them to improve the sound quality when the volume is higher, are there any recommended upgrades for this?

#14271 11 months ago

1. Knocker sound for replay 2. Match to replay 3. Yes, throwback to Addams Family? 4. Yes, but I wouldn't bother, search using an external sub.

Easiest would be these speakers. You will notice improvement. You can do a lot more, see DIY Audio thread as mentioned.

That sound is the knocker telling you won a free game or did something good.
It's funny how often the knocker confuses new people. Me and my GF thought the speakers were blown the first few times we heard it.

For speakers one of the best things you can do is add an external subwoofer. There are kits you can buy that adds an output to send to an external sub and it really rounds the sound out.

3. Pinstadiums. I can't imagine this game without them. Adds so much life. I run the game with the room lights off, like a dark 80s arcade vibe.

Nice, I'll see if I end up replacing the brackets later, I wasn't impressed by the one for the leg that I stripped, I didn't force it at all and it just broke.
For now I have nuts coming in though so I'll be able to secure the legs properly, right now nudging the machine is forbidden

Pinstadium? Never heard of them but I'm intrigued... after looking at an installation video it seems that you're paying 400USD for an app controlled RGB LED strip though? The app control in general seems overkill to me, but the product seems nice, although it did also seem to obscure a bit of the view on the sides?

#14278 11 months ago

You can shut the knocker off.

A match sequence is a game mechanic that appears at the end of a game of pinball. It often takes a rounded up number from the end of a players score and compares it to a random set of numbers. If the players number matches the random number the player will be awarded a free game.

#14279 11 months ago

No disrespect, but I see this question a lot. It's strange people haven't heard a knocker in pinball. Because seems like you would have played one somewhere before you decide to buy one, but maybe not.

I played the Iron Maiden pin at three separate locations on multiple occasions before buying my own machine, never once heard the knocker before. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's not to say I'm not very new, I am, I got forced into this thing by the fact that the game is Iron Maiden themed, now I'm just loving the ride

Oh, wow! Honestly, I was thinking he would be older. SO many great illustrations for Iron Maiden album art over their careers! I would LOVE to ask him a few questions of course - like, what was the inspiration for Eddie? Was it simply a mummy? Eddie really doesn't look all that mummy-like on his inaugural cover, IMHO. He looks more like a corpse with teased hair.

These dang spoon switches. Terrible. Hopefully they stay where they are now.

#14285 11 months ago
Quoted from alto:

That's weird. Stern uses the same beefy brackets in all their cabinets. If one of your brackets was defective and had fewer threads to accept a leg bolt I would be surprised, but apparently that's just what happened. Drat! Side note: I always grease the threads on my leg bolts to lower the odds of stripping the receiving threads in the bracket!

#14286 11 months ago
Quoted from Multiballmaniac1:

I feel you, bruh'! The Stern spoon switches are trash. They twist and twisting is NOT what they should do. The shank of the switch is super cheap/flimsy so it twists. For the switch to open in response to the movement of the actuator, it needs to twist as little as possible. WMS pops switches have a copper tang where Stern's have a stainless tang. I have spent a LOT of time getting those switches to work right on my pin. You have to gap them perfectly and you have to apply Lock-Tight to the threads of the Newton ball stud to prevent the actuator from backing off of there. Even a half turn of movement will disturb your gap! You also have to bend as necessary the switch's bracket to center the spoon over the tip of the actuator. That's important!

#14287 11 months ago

Code Bug?

My game sometimes gets confused by the Sarcophagus Lock. The ball rolls in there and the lock swings down to the level position, but then the game just waits, dazed. It doesn't auto-plunge a ball. Eventually it ball searches but the search does NOT involve tipping the lock down to dump the ball into the scoop for an ejection. The lock only swings up and then back to level, accomplishing nothing. I have no choice in this case but to force-quit the game and start a new game. Could I beat this by etching fresh code on a new SD card and loading that in my machine instead? I have tested that reed switch that sits in the lock and it seems to test fine.

Iron Maiden is by far the pin that I have to tinker with the most out of all my other modern sterns. It’s crazy the amount of time I’ve put into getting it playing right.
- Countless times adjusting the sarcophagus newton ball
- replacing the switch in the upper ball trough to an MRS switch.
- Adjusting the shooter rod and ball launch guide rail for proper manual plunges
- Messing with the auto plunge for days to get it to be consistent with launching the ball. Eventually after lots of trial and error with the forks AND replacing the coil with a more powerful one it’s 99% perfect and predictable.

This is all with a most recent build. They have had years to fix this stuff and just don’t care apparently.

1. Adjusted (countless times) shooter lane ball guide
2. New QR reader
3. New main CPU
4. Lots of tinkering with Orb.

Stern has been great, providing a tech, and all parts.

Quoted from tgarrett09:

Sorry, but what exactly is an MRS switch? I’ve tried googling an image, but can’t seem to find it
I’m having intermittent issues with the upper trough switch on my Maiden premium and would love to have it working 100%
With thx

I don't think you can replace optos with magnetic reed switches. Not easily, at least. The trough switches are optos.

You likely have a loose connector on one of the two opto boards (send or receive) and just need to spread the prongs a little so it grips the connector more tightly.

If Germany and the Netherlands are in the EU, then yes, try these businesses:

Thanks for the links, I hadn't seen ministryofpinball before, that was a nice find.

Quoted from Jason_Jehosaphat:

Eddie on the first album was originally a depiction of a burnt soldier, that much I know, then he somehow transformed further into the legendary Eddie that you see on the Killers cover. There is further information on Wikipedia if you're curious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_(Iron_Maiden)

Quoted from Jason_Jehosaphat:

Well, your English is great. I assume Swedish is your native language. I speak no Swedish at all, although I would happily learn a phrase or two.
(Off topic: I saw a great Swedish movie this summer on Tubi called "Lust Och Fägring Stor." Perhaps you know of it. In English it's called All Things Fair. It was made in 1995.)

Yes, Swedish is my native language, though I haven't seen Lust och Fägring Stor. I generally don't really like Swedish films, but that's even more off topic.

Quoted from Sluggo39:

I 2nd this, just put a Pinwoofer system in My Rush LE and wow it’s awesome, so I ordered a diy amp from them for Maiden since I already upgraded the speakers and you can’t go wrong with whatever Pinwoofer kit you decide on. Dan at Pinwoofer is great.

I'll have to look into Pinwoofers then, I found that the amp and power board kit is easy to get a hold of for me, so that would mean looking for better speakers in addition as well I guess.
