The Carpenters music and arrangements were for the most part absolute genius. (Of course, Burt Bacharach pitched in from time to time...)

This is absolutely true. Brian Wilson is a genius, and that was him at the peak of his powers. That song DID influence the Beatles, and specifically Paul McCartney.
Difference is...the Beatles went on to influence EVERYBODY ELSE.

I wasn't pretending. I loved them all. I also loved Air Supply, Winger, Dokken, Christopher Cross...I could go on and on. And don't get me started on the new wave stuff: Flock of Seagulls, The Fixx, OMD, Depeche Mode, etc., etc. I figured by liking all different styles of music, I'd have a wider array of chicks to pick from.
