I’m looking for help from the local playfield restoration experts. I started a thread asking for advice using Novus products, but I didn’t really get the specific types of answers I was looking for.

I wish I could post a pic in this thread. If you look at the pic, you can see the area of high luster finish where the ball does not reach, vs. the worn area.

Big picture question - can I restore the worn area to its original luster? i.e. is it worn (never able to achieve original color and gloss), or just dirty (TLC and elbow grease will get it polished up to like new)?

The ball tracks - what exactly are they? Are they actually worn areas, or just impacted crud that can be cleaned away?

Any tips for working with the Novus products and different types of cleaning/polishing applicators is greatly appreciated.

I want to get this thing back to that shiny new appearance buy I want to know if I’m living in Fantasyland and that goal is not achievable.

Feel free to post here or PM me.

What title are you working with? Different eras have different approaches...

#15703 3 years ago

It’s either a Simpson’s or a time travel.

#15704 3 years ago
Quoted from Tallon:

It’s either a Simpson’s or a time travel.

Either way, novus is going to be your next to last step. The playfield (if your just cleaning and not doing a touch up restore) will need to be “stripped” and cleaned then polished (novus) and finally protected (wax). Even though novus is a cleaning product, depending on what you have going on is what will dictate what needs to be done.

Post in the Brobra’s pinball adventure thread. There’s several guys that chime in on this sort of thing.

Ball trails are worn areas in the clear. Novus will essentially sand this out. 3 is stronger than 2. But everytime you use these products, your are slightly thinning the clear and can also go too far on worn areas and hit paint.

Here’s a link to my other thread which has a pic to highlight the contrast in the two areas:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/seeking-advice-for-using-novus-products

So from what I’m reading so far, it appears that the problem is two-fold:
- impacted grime
- microscratching of the clear coat

Is this correct?

Appears your discussing Kiss (Stern) specifically. Yes, what you describe is correct.

This produced great results for me: https://treasurecovepinball.com/polishing-kit.htm
However, it appears they got out of the kit business? Either way, it should give you an idea on what is all involved.

Otherwise strip the playfield down and send it out to a restorer to clean\clearcoat.

Selling or trading my TWD. Color DMD and speakers. 11k plays. Was routed. Pm me if interested, will donate to pinside upon sale.

Dang it.......now I want that kit! That looks like exactly what I am looking for. Especially all of the buffing tools that work on a drill. I have been experimenting with hand cleaning with the sponge that came from Pinballlife and it’s not even making a dent.

I wrote to the company to see if they are ever going to restock the kit. I’ll let you know what I hear back. (Maybe it’s just me but the owner looks like he is related to Bert Blyleven )

#15710 3 years ago

You don't need their kit. Just go to the auto store and buy 3 levels of clearcoat products. I use Mcguires 82, 83 and 84 i think (not at home to view bottles). You then can buy different levels of foam and or wool pads that go in your drill. Pinrestore.com used to have those pads....not sure if they still do.

Just think of your playfield as a car clearcoat. But be careful and don't stay in one place very long as you can burn through the clear just like on a car.

The owner (Allan) died a few years ago. I am not sure if his family kept the business going or not. That website doesn't look to be updated in quite a long time.

Someone sent me a nice kit. Secret Santa stuff. They do exist.

It honestly does looks nice, but come the Hell on. If you're charging HEP prices - you better come with gigs of photos. It's the most expected pile on I've seen in a while.

If it had 4k displays and DTS/dolby 8.1 sound. so I could just see and hear meow meow meow meow in HD....I mean...8k seems cheap then.

Well if people are asking ridiculous prices like $8k, then yes, that's a heck of a gift. I'm hoping to get it by April 1. I would also consider trading something out of my collection if someone wants to go that route, but would rather just put cash on the glass.

I don't know about POTC, but having used the LED in my T3, I am amazed at how much cooler some games could look with the LED over LCD. I think LOTR would look better with LED over LCD personally.

I had an LED in Tales from the Crypt when I owned one and it looked amazing. Highly suggested.

I’ve found 90% of folks like Plasma, but I’m in alignment with other folks here on the LED, as I feel it simulates the dot matrix a bit better and is very vibrant. It just has that coin op/arcade feel. I personally don’t like hard edged pixel art that gets softened out.

What/where is the most cost effective way to buy one. Is there one brand better than others? Thanks...

I'm getting pretty tired of pinball.

I'm looking for advice on where to find busted old carnival rides. Bonus points if the ads get refreshed once a day for a decade (I want to make sure there are truly zero other interested parties so that I can really drive a hard bargain).

Thanks in advance.

I know several folks that operate carnival rides and equipment; are you looking for a ferris wheel, roller coaster, octopus; i.e. that ilk of rides?

I know who you are talking about. Took a trip out and bought an arcade game off them. A few friends and I have talked about going back to buy bumper cars, but just never get around to it.

Funny thing is he does have a few pins, but the prices were high retail for unshopped games.
