Recently acquired a Gottlieb VS Basketball Themed Pinball. I’m not sure if it was a prototype, or really anything about it at all. Anyone here have any insight? The game is titled One on One basketball, and is a cocktail style pin with a large acrylic dome.

Quoted from 20eyes:

One of the tags says sample on it might be a good idea to back up the roms. Does it have the same hoops as Shaq Attaq? Maybe Jon Norris would have some info on it.

I’m not sure about the same hoops as Shaq, the hoops move back and forth when you are playing....and good eyes on the sample tag, I didn’t notice that.

Quoted from Wmsfan-GAP:

Did the seller have any insight to share with you?

Seller didn’t know much about it, just thought it came from an arcade in Amarillo, because there is a sticker on it.

That’s amazing, I couldn’t figure out what the hell that said.

Quoted from MattElder:

Very cool piece of pinball history there. Jon Norris would definitely be the one to ask about it. Odds are pretty good that he had something to do with it.
I should have a good email address for him still. Shoot me a PM if you’re interested in contacting him.

Matt you got a pm incoming.

Thanks everybody, I think it’s a pretty cool find too. And don’t worry I’ll be backing up the ROMS asap

#24 4 years ago
Quoted from Daditude:

Did you find any more info on it?

No more info at the moment. I’m waiting on responses from a few Gottlieb experts.

#25 4 years ago
Quoted from solarvalue:

Can you post a video of gameplay?

I’ll post a video and better photos soon-ish. It’s actually at my friends house as he picked it up for me.

#30 4 years ago
Quoted from gliebig:

Get it home. I want to play it.
The only basketball game I'm tall enough to play.

It’s a cocktail table, so you’ll have to bring your stool over so you can see over top of the game

#39 4 years ago
Quoted from bluespin:

n80g80 You should call Steve Young at Pinball Resource. He has the Gottlieb archives so he should have some information about this game.

He was the first person I sent an email to, waiting to hear back from him.

Pinball resources response:

You are very lucky, you got a prototype game that was never released into production -It Gottlieb Game Number is C03 (their third cocktail game).

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

With the sticker and the dollar bill acceptor installed, it appears this game was routed. Check the audits, I'd love to know how much $ it made. Very cool piece! And in Maryland? How'd you beat Lloyd to it?!

It wasn’t anywhere close to MD lol

#65 4 years ago
Quoted from Isochronic_Frost:

I thought that was pretty funny to be honest! Some arcade had this thing sitting around, this rare, three-of-a-kind piece of pinball history and they’re like “will people pay a buck to play this basketball thing? Probably.”
I’m sure they had no idea of the historical significance. Also it looks like they were able to add the validator in very cleanly

I’m sort of astounded it just kind of fell out of historical knowledge....there’s legit ‘0’ documentation or reference about it anywhere.

Quoted from hool10:

How much did you pay for it out of curiosity?

$25k

#87 4 years ago
Quoted from mbwalker:

Maybe a better way to ask is "Did you get a good deal on it?"

If you think driving 13-14 hours to pickup a game is a good deal lol

#97 4 years ago
Quoted from Foo:

10k by Christmas! Come on... someone had to say it.

Haha I’ve had a bunch of offers on it already.....don’t even know what I’d sell it for if I did

#98 4 years ago
Quoted from pinballguru:

Thanks Lonnie for verifying me.
One on One was designed by me in late 1995 and we made a few (three to five) prototypes in early 1996. The game was an arcade novelty game based on the existing arcade hoops style games where the object was to make as many baskets as possible during a timed game. It had an adjustable "Catch-Up" feature, where if one player fell behind by 10 points, their baskets would score more points.
The game was never made because Gottlieb closed in July 1996. I do recall seeing at least one of these sold at the liquidation auction in late 1996.
A side note, I also designed an arcade novelty drag race game that used the same principle except that target hits advanced your car up a drag strip and the first car across the finish line won. Instead of a basket, this game used the drop target arrangement from Hot Shots, with standup targets replacing the drop targets. The cabinet was a side-by-side style rather than a head to head style. That game was titled "Eliminator" This game was done around 1990 and never made it past the whitewood stage and was killed when the company went to the street line design philosophy.

Thanks for the info Jon! Do you figure the one I have is the one that sold at auction? All I know is it was operated by an arcade in Amarillo.

Quoted from Kkuoppamaki:

Mindblowing that discoveries like this are made 23 years after Gottlieb selling their assets. Now, can we please get some more pics and a video of game play

They’ll be up by the end of the weekend I hope!

I’m getting a better camera and having a friend with some video experience help me to get up a decent video and better photos.

Quoted from Teknotoyz:

That would be my part... 30 minute drive to the sellers house!![quoted image]

Couldn’t have done it without you man! Thanks!

#124 4 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

So as far as you can tell, does it work? Can you play it now?

I’m in the middle of what’ll be a 15 hour road trip to pick it up. It was working when it was picked up and playable.

19 hours
830 miles
Wayyyy too much McDonald’s
A boat load of fuel
About 4 hours of sleep

AND

1x One on One Gottlieb Prototype VS Basketball Pinball (priceless)

Playing 100% and if I may say so a lot of fun!

any audits on how much it made?

I just got home 5 mins ago, played two games, I haven’t even tried to figure out the menu system yet.

Quoted from Gundam_Pilot_:

Very cool machine. This is something I would love to have in my collection since I own a lot of rare stuff and both of the Gottlieb cocktails already. Very Jealous!

Yeah you and a handful of other people want it, at least I got a handful of pm’s already.....not sure exactly what I’m gonna do with it....I want it documented correctly, high res photos, and some gameplay videos....I’ll probably shop it out and bring it to the York show maybe? Maybe let everyone see it/play it? No idea yet though

#136 4 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

LOFL!!!
This think is 5k all day. You may find some sucker at 10k that has more money than he knows what to do with, but I cant imagine anyone giving you 17k for a cocktail no matter if it is 1 of 5 made. (or 1 or 3 that likely exist).
cool to see this thing but sad to see it is more about the flip already.

Not about the flip at all. Everyone that has messaged me I’ve told I have no idea what I’m doing with it. I mostly want it documented, and like I said in my last post I’m really considering bringing it to the York show so many people can see/enjoy it.

#143 4 years ago
Quoted from gliebig:

How dimpled is that playfield from all those airballs?

No dimples and the playfield is covered in Mylar...back when they made pinball machines like tanks

#147 4 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Yeah gottlieb games of that era are known for their pristine playfields lol
The combination of no diamondcoat, odd mylar-free zones, and defective pinballs were not kind to many of those machines.

I’m probably lucky on this one as the playfield goes, it is almost entirely Mylar-ed, and I’d assume given its condition it didn’t see too much arcade time.

And I totally agree with you on the uniqueness of this being possibly the last working machine Gottlieb ever made. It’s actually a surprisingly fun game, and I’m by no means some Gottlieb fanboy, Jon just did a good job on design and whoever programmed it did well with audio and the light show.

#149 4 years ago
Quoted from pinballguru:

The cars were on the backbox as: (1- A string of lights or 2- Physical cars if the budget allowed). The prototype used lights to represent the cars.

Any chance you have any old photos of either of them?

#157 4 years ago
Quoted from HHaase:

Back to the technical side, does it use standard pinballs? Or some other material such as a plastic?
Any documentation at all on the machine, such as schematics or parts diagrams?
Regardless of long-term intent, it is extremely important to build up a technical documentation package if there isn't one present from Gottleb.
Wiring pinouts, boards used, things of that nature. Being this isn't a normal pinball system, having an extremely unique cabinet, mechanisms, and all that.... it's going to be extremely difficult in the long term to trouble shoot without some kind of reference material. Not like you can ask anybody where a wire goes if it breaks.
Get a 16gb camera, set your photo settings to max resolution, and don't stop until you're out of memory space. If you've got a buddy with a good SLR and a knack for photos, toss him a 6 pack and ask for the favor.
-Hans

There is no paper documentation on the game that I can find, or that pinball resource has. I do intend to take a billion photos with my DSLR. I want the game thoroughly documented.

#168 4 years ago
Quoted from Jappie:

Reading stuff like this, I must say, I get the feeling that the game is in really good hands.
So much talk here about selling it... Have you considered to just keep it? I mean hey, it's your machine. There's a personal story behind it for you (which is still being written as of now). And it's so cool to have a piece that literally nobody else in the world has.

Story of the game so far as I know:

Jon Norris designed the game 5 were made, 2 destroyed and 1x sold at auction (likely the one I own)

The one I own was operated at an Arcade in Amarillo Texas and sold to a local in Amarillo when either the arcade closed, or the game stopped earning.

The gentleman that I purchased it from bought it from that local Amarillo man about 6 or so years ago and has had it in his collection since then.

I found it for sale and then had a local friend of mine Teknotoyz go and pick it up for me. The game was middle of nowhere WV.

So far as I can tell the game hasn’t really been altered. The cabinet has been repainted black, previous owner had some odd feet on the bottom to make it taller (removed now).

I doubt the game has ever been serviced and I’ll get into it the next week or so.

Lots of photos and videos to come!

Quoted from Luckydogg420:

forceflow could it be possible to get some of the better posts in This thread marked as “key posts”? Maybe the ones from Jon Norris also. I have a feeling that this thread will get long and have a lot of cool information before we’re done.

Oooh. The story deepens. I wonder if this is #2 of 3-5 possible games? It’s highly unlikely that your picture is the same game as the OP’s game. If it was in a basement in the burbs, I doubt it had a dollar bill acceptor slapped on and put on route.
So there’s probably 2 now.
#1, sold at auction, put on route, saved from the wild to be tagged and documented.
#2, private collection in Chicago area.

I can confirm that there are in fact two of these that exist. I was messaged by the owner of the other machine who wanted to remain anonymous. He didn’t want to be inundated with messages asking to sell it. His came from a vendor that he knew. His appears to be the same as mine in every way, bill validator and all.

#179 4 years ago

A few more photos, not high res, but I’m working on it, hoping to get high res photos and video up this coming weekend.

Just as a note the videos were both done with the dome off as to make it a little easier to see. Down side of that is it sort of muted the audio a bit.

#185 4 years ago
Quoted from Luckydogg420:

Is this a fact? If so, it adds to the prestige.
This is a picture of the most interesting ROMs in pinball today, do you have the equipment to get them backed up?
The [quoted image]
Since the cabinet has been painted black, will you restore it? Have you asked the other owner what the cabinet looked like? (I assume cheesy wood grain)

The other cabinet is also just gloss black. It’s honestly hard to know exactly what they may have been like in production, most true prototype/sample games I’ve seen over the years are somewhat thrown together, some have variance. And don’t worry, I’ll be backing up the ROMS very soon.
