Recently acquired a Gottlieb VS Basketball Themed Pinball. I’m not sure if it was a prototype, or really anything about it at all. Anyone here have any insight? The game is titled One on One basketball, and is a cocktail style pin with a large acrylic dome.

One of the tags says sample on it might be a good idea to back up the roms. Does it have the same hoops as Shaq Attaq? Maybe Jon Norris would have some info on it.

#3 4 years ago

You could have a 'One of a Kind". The name 'One on One' is not on IPDB.

I’m not sure about the same hoops as Shaq, the hoops move back and forth when you are playing....and good eyes on the sample tag, I didn’t notice that.

Did the seller have any insight to share with you?

Seller didn’t know much about it, just thought it came from an arcade in Amarillo, because there is a sticker on it.

That’s amazing, I couldn’t figure out what the hell that said.

#9 4 years ago

Tag says sample with a number 7 circled, possible test game?

#10 4 years ago

This is amazing. Nice find!!

#11 4 years ago

Very cool piece of pinball history there. Jon Norris would definitely be the one to ask about it. Odds are pretty good that he had something to do with it.

I should have a good email address for him still. Shoot me a PM if you’re interested in contacting him.

All I can think is... WTF?!?

What an absolutely bizarre machine! Back up those ROMs ASAP, and get some documentation. Find out everything. Write it down. It’s not everyday a completely brand new never-before-seen COCKTAIL HEAD TO HEAD pinball machine comes to light! If those ROMs die then this game is probably useless. Back them up or contact someone who can!!! This is very exciting!

#14 4 years ago

Wow, that's really interesting. Never heard anything about it before. Nice find!

#15 4 years ago

Wow, that is neat. Congrats

Matt you got a pm incoming.

Thanks everybody, I think it’s a pretty cool find too. And don’t worry I’ll be backing up the ROMS asap

#17 4 years ago

Vey nice find! We shall call it Baby Shaq!

#18 4 years ago

Very, very cool find!

The soundroms reveal the modelnumber: C103

Caribbean Cruise was C102
Night Moves C101

These cocktail pins were manufactured under the name of International Concepts.

#19 4 years ago

Following!!

#20 4 years ago

Wow, what a cool find! I am glad it wound up with someone who is willing to post info about the game. I am looking forward to seeing what Jon Norris can recall about the machine.

Oh yes, and detailed pics of everything please.

#24 4 years ago
Quoted from Daditude:

Did you find any more info on it?

No more info at the moment. I’m waiting on responses from a few Gottlieb experts.

It’s a cocktail table, so you’ll have to bring your stool over so you can see over top of the game

Never seen one of those before, very cool! Interested in learning the backstory if you can get it!

would also love to hear how you came to find this and now own it.

#34 4 years ago

N80G80 You should call Steve Young at Pinball Resource. He has the Gottlieb archives so he should have some information about this game.

#35 4 years ago
Quoted from MarAlb:

These cocktail pins were manufactured under the name of International Concepts.

Gil Pollock explained the relationship between Premier/Gottlieb and International Concepts several years ago at Pinball Expo. In brief, Premier acted as contract manufacturer, but allowed the games to be obvious as products of the Gottlieb pinball factory. IC wanted to do cocktail games; Premier had no interest in doing any; Premier never would have built a conventional-style pinball for another company. For this game, it would help a lot to find any info that establishes a date, because the IC-Premier relationship was already shaky when Carribean Cruise was on the production line.

Agree here, I’m questioning whether this was an International Concepts game or not? It’s a complete 180 from what the other 2 look like and this has Gottlieb’s name all over it.

I’m gonna hazard a guess that they had a design in mind for a 3rd game should it get to that point, considering they designed all the games. So they probably had this as a contingency plan and when things fell through with IC they put it out as a test, lost interest or went under by then and thus it’s lived in the wild since then.

It looks as if each side of the playfield can be lifted independently. Is there truth to that?

Sure looks like two independent playfields from the photos.

1989, perhaps? That appears to be when both IC was involved and when the transition from 80B to System 3 happened.

On the wiring harness label and ROMs, I see there is a model number: C103. C101 was Night Moves and C102 was Caribbean Cruse, so it seems logical that this "one on one" game came soon after that.

Night Moves: https://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=3507
Caribbean Cruse: https://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=3003

Datecodes printed on the Integrated Circuits can indicate a possible production date assuming the boards are original. Shaq Attaq is from 1995.... Did Shaq Attaq borrow some ideas from this rejected(?) Cocktail Game?? Or was it the other way around?

Very interesting....can't wait about the story of this gem.....

#43 4 years ago

did you find this on Facebook Marketplace? Pretty sure I saw the listing, sent an message but it was yours by then I guess. congrats on a very unique score.

John at John's Jukes might know something about it. What's his pinside name? Flippers_com ?

If you didn't send him a part number with that, you're probably out of luck, lol.

Pinball resources response:

You are very lucky, you got a prototype game that was never released into production -It Gottlieb Game Number is C03 (their third cocktail game).

This is insane, nice catch!
