Capacitor choices is an art that can't really be boiled down to an exact recipe.
When in doubt, always consult the schematic to determine how its being used.
In most cases electrolytic caps are the most usual replacements, and those are usually power supply filtering which doesn't have critical capacitance requirements.. So close enough usually fits the bill as long as it meets the voltage rating.
