Hi all,
My STTNG has some attitude problems (random ball searches during game) I have changed the ball thrugh boards. also the wiring loom to both guns.
The game still gives me a slight headache and i started to go thru all switches. the under gun switches doesn't register in switch test (both left and right) but they register when doing the gun motor test. (open/close shows up on DMD)
anybody who can point me in the right direction?
which IC controls those switches on MPU, not U20?
Thanks a lot as always

Before you start replacing ICs I would suggest you try to rule out a broken wire, bad switch diode etc. You can manually ground the switch to see if it registers and do some other tests. Good article on how to do them on pinwiki.

thanks, so (of course) the switches should register in switch test, right?

I am half asleep so hopefully someone can verify, but if you get normal switch opening and closing activity when doing manual grounding, your problem is somewhere under the playfield and not on the boards. The only problem is that sttng has a few "direct" switches that are outside of the matrix. I know the spinner is one of them. Not sure if the cannon switches are direct switches or if that would make a difference when diagnosing the weird activity you are getting anyway. The manual will tell you whether the cannon switches are direct.

interesting. im not going to keep you awake unless you are burning to answer all my questions.
all the non registering switches are in column 9. column 1-8 are controlled by U20 (which is socketed on my board and was changed yesterday BTW) column 9 is labeled "Q11 J5-1" whatever that is?
Sleep well

Yeah that sounds like its off the regular 8x8 switch matrix then. Will try to figure it out when I get home tonight if still unsolved.

Thanks Rudy. after reading up on pinwiki, it looks like those 4 switches in question are not included in the regular switch test but tested with the guns, and they register fine there.
thanks a lot for your help
im sleepy, semi drunk, ultra tired and i need to clean up the bar and go home.
