I joined the club today too. Can’t wait to get mine. One question...

Will they clean the brass on switches? I hate the tarnished look of old sling switches...

the ultrasonice will help clean the "crud" off of the brass switch blades, but you should really tumble them afterwards and use flitz (that way they have a nice protective coating on them when they're done and won't oxidize up right away

Thanks, I have a tumbler and flitz so I'll do the multi-step process. I've never gone to that extreme with a game. Normally I just shop them and good enough. But I'd like to make my STTNG as nice as possible. Looks like the switches are coming out for some love. I suppose I can do the same treatment for the targets, I don't think that the tumbler would hurt the plastics?

Depends on the solution you use. One of my many side hobbies is tinkering with old clocks. There are clock cleaning products that will make those blades look like new. I'm sure those in the ammo reloading hobby have similar products to clean shells.

Some results from my ultrasonic cleaner. Items are from a 1972 Gottlieb Flying Carpet. Solution used was about 2 cups of Simple Green Pro HD, a tablespoon of dawn, and 2 liters of water. Ran it for 20 minutes at 60 celcius. Pleased with the results. I’m kinda amazed how well it works on screws and such too. My tumbler is collecting dust....

I dunno, your first two before-after photos make it appear that your ultrasonic actually adds years worth of dirt and grime to the parts

Yeah, but I like his musical selections! Great background music while the machine hums along!

    #564 5 months ago

Yeah, well, I figured out how to prioritize pictures after the first post. =)

And yeah, lots of GD music streams as I work on machines. I'd say GD is my second hobby. Pretty much the only music that streams from my speakers. =)

I'm starting another "experiment" today - vinegar to deal with rust. I'll start a separate thread on that topic with results.

Anyone ever try putting rusty parts in a glass jar with evaporust (or equivalent) and putting it in the ultrasonic?

    #566 5 months ago

Had my ultrasonic break this past week. One of the two ultrasonic devices attached to the metal tub started burning up.

I can't hurt to experiment, but to me it would make sense to give the parts a quick ultrasonic job just to remove grime, then soak in evaporust a couple of days. Rinse off, and tumble for awhile to polish, if you need them to be better yet.

Personally I never had luck with metal in the ultrasonic , at least using purple power

    #569 5 months ago

Yeah, I have seen some mixed results too. One thing I can say is if you get that black crap look on some metals, like a flipper mech, You can scrub it off under running water with a small wire brush. Once you do, the mech will look great.

Something that works great for me with 50/50 purple power and distilled water is cleaning 555 lamp holders. Do them hot and quite a while (say 10 min) It just does wonders on the brass inside. Makes them work reliably again.
