Paid in full and shipping soon #191 CE!

#191 CE has landed!
First impressions are very good.

A dear friend (non pinball) gave me a hand unboxing (87 years young!)

Game play is different and in a good way
Love the upper PFs
Love the art package, it’s stunning
The sounds and lights show - among best of any of my games

The lifters during regular gameplay are a cool and unique feature, I was able to adjust to not seeing the ball enter the inlane. During multi ball it’s going to take some getting used to the lifters. I’ve found myself losing balls often during multi ball. Might just take a similar amount of time to adjust play style

My ramps and diverter have worked flawlessly

Very minor issues unboxing:
Decal on apron installed crooked (will reach out to spooky for new one)
Sound not working on startup (amp was switched off in cabinet)
Blade on topper had fallen off (Allen wrench 0.5 size to tighten)
Right lifter sticks up every 20 times or so (not sorted yet)

I saw all the reviews and noticed that many folks commented on the unique gameplay. So far, I only have 10 games in but I really wanted a game that played different. This does and puts a big smile on my face
Great job Spooky!

Quoted from Gambeno:

So tonight I was playing the game and during Jirah battle my ball disappeared when it went down the hole on the upper, upper playfield. Shook the machine but it never came back (tilted). I cut the game off and raise the playfield cause I couldn't find the ball anywhere. The ball finally showed it self, but when I lower the playfield and cut the game back on the coil for the through and the left flipper coil do not respond. even in test mode they do not work. Has anyone had this happen before? Is it a software issue because I cut the game off during a tilt? Seems unlikely they both went bad and at the same time. Nothing seems damaged or unhooked when I checked.

Sound like a wire came unplugged, loosely plugged in or unsoldered. May have been why the ball never showed up. Switch and or coil was not firing so ball stayed put even through ball search.

#1814 1 year ago
Quoted from Gambeno:

I think I found the issue. Looks like one of the solenoid fuses blew on the board.
[quoted image]

Now carefully check the wiring at the connection points of the coils that were not working to see if any terminals have a loose wire or are touching each other. The fuse popped and now have to find the issue

#1815 1 year ago
Quoted from MT45:

Right lifter sticks up every 20 times or so (not sorted yet)

Think I found the issue. Couple of zip ties to correct and so far I’m back in business

Just did the spacer mod. Subtle but noticeable and worth it. Cheap and simple sound upgrade.
Can easily be done by unbolting speaker and flipping it to sit upside down on shaker

Will need new machine screws at 1.5” vs the existing ones at 0.75”
Hint, drill 2 holes (I used 1/4” bit) that perfectly bisect the spacer, then place the spacer on the speaker, slide in two bolts into your new holes, through the speaker too (no need for a nut)
Then center spacer (with 2 bolts sitting in holes through speaker) now reach underneath using a pencil and draw the location of the next 2 holes to drill. Note the ring is “just large enough” and your center to center measurement is 9 and 3/32”

Quoted from Riefepeters:

I have UM Currently sitting next to the shadow and I was like…you know, this game kind of reminds me of the shadow.
I haven’t been able to play much the past week or so, but I put a few games on tonight and it’s just so great.
If I were to concisely explain this game it would go something like:
-reminiscent of 90s B/W rulesets
-slower paced than modern sterns
-highly unique layout with 2 additional playfield levels - each with their own mini games/modes
-requires intentional gameplay and shotmaking - not likely to unlock modes or multi balls by just flipping like you might in other modern games
-hot damn gorgeous
It’s just a very nice complement to the collection and it’s nice to have something a little different.
FWIW: my game pretty much played flawlessly out of the box. I still drink a glass of wine waiting for this thing to boot up, but if that’s my only complaint then that aint much to complain about!

Great summary… I’m about 30 games in and would agree with your assessment
I keep looking for the negatives that have folks selling their spots but I’m not finding any
It’s quite a unique game and creates a nice moment when you cross the bridge from headquarters. Feels like an accomplishment!
And, yes - it looks stunning

Thank you so much

Red King approves this blog post, nice write up. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks and funny enough, I saw that mode tonight when I set the GC. It was amazing and I’m sure I had no idea what I was doing
I am absolutely enjoying this game! That upper PF is so much fun

Quoted from RickyBobby1:

Received my game Monday and have been smashing the flippers ever since. #199 performed well right out of the box. The only adjustment made was the farthest left of the 3 standup targets. It was always in the lowered position. The mechanism to lift the left target had popped behind it probably during shipping and I just popped it back and everything is working as it should. This game is a ton of fun and the music, callouts, artwork, flow is spot on. Boot-up time is good, only 10 secs longer than my Led Zeppelin and BKSOR. I am loving the UM!! It is in the #1 spot of my lineup!
[quoted image]

Congrats on the game. I’m absolutely loving mine. Not playing anything else now
Sooooooo many different shots in this game!

Added the replacement backbox display (IPS screen) and it makes a HUGE difference
Wow! Beautiful image and no change in the image quality no matter what the angle
Overall it feels like it’s significantly easier to read the text as well (score, ball count, etc)
Big win and a fast/easy install

Are these easy to swap in? Any online videos of guides to follow or is it an easy swap.

Super easy. 30 mins

Quoted from TigerLaw:

Y’all have sold me. I’m going to buy one of these for R&M and see how I like it. If it is as good as you all are saying I may buy one for UM as well. Are y’all getting the acrylic protector for the screen? The upgrade?

I did not get the upgrade and wished I had
My protector is not scratched but they can easily get so

#1868 1 year ago

My games PF is/was very tight in the right side up where the metal cover for the headquarters pokes out. It’s a sharp corner and it’s stainless steel. I’ve been using my art blade protectors to lift the PF and protect the art but several times when lowering it that metal cover caught the upright edge of the cabinet and sprung up then snapped down. No damage to the metal part and none to game cab but just a matter of time before something bad happens (bent metal part or cut right through the art protector). I pulled the cover and ground the edge that faces you as the player back with my bench grinder. I ground it in a profile that angled away from the vertical edge of the cabinet in order to create as much space between the metal and the art on the side of the cabinet

- removed 2 nuts
- removed metal cover
- carefully peel decal back about 1” (grinding heat will destroy it if you don’t)
- cover sticky side of exposed decal with wax paper (keeps metal filings from sticking)
- grind down edge and keep cold wet cloth nearby to cool part as you go)
- hand file sharp edges when done
- trim decal now as it’s likely too long
- roll decal back onto metal cover and stick it down
- reinstall metal cover

I removed about 3/16” or so of material and it seems less risky to damage something now

Added a Polk sub to UM tonight. 5 minute job with a 3.5mm “Y” splitter and and RCA pigtail on the subwoofer end

- unplug 3.5mm audio out at jack on back of monitor in backbox - in my image it’s the green jack (we’ll call this cable “A”)
- plug the “Y” splitter into the now empty jack
- plug back in the original 3.5mm (cable “A”) into one of the two ends of the “Y” splitter
- grab your brand new 12’ long 3.5mm subwoofer cable and a step stool
- climb the stool and route the cable into the backbox from the rear of the game (use same spot Spooky did for topper wiring - you don’t even need to unstable the screen, it’s already done)
- reach up into the backbox and pull your new 12’ long 3.5mm subwoofer cable down to a spot near the “Y” adapter
- now plug the subwoofer cable into the other available end of the “Y” splitter
- on the subwoofer end, plug a 3.5mm to L/R RCA adapter and plug that into your sub
- set the sub crossover at 80hz
- set the volume on the sub around 1 o clock
Done!

Added Titan transparent rubbers to the game.
Was going to try some other colors but settled on transparent to transmit a little more light to the playfield

Also swapped out flipper rubbers and used 2 different colors
I know some won't like it but I do
- Left side Red matches the colors and the Kaiju
- Right side Purple does the same for the right side

Read about it at the Pinball Loft blog
Normally I wouldn't post something this basic but there are not a lot of images of the game taken apart and it may help someone out

I originally put clear on mine but didn't like the look as the lighting seems not to effect or shine through them at all. I then tried blue and for some reason settled on pink on the slings and white on flippers.
So yea, probably not a good idea to use my opinion as it looks good to me.

Love to see some pics!

Quoted from cldgin2:

Not sure if any one posted yet, but here’s a photo of the great Steve Richie playing Ultraman! I was lucky enough to get a turn playing alongside him. Was really fun, and my first time playing this amazing game. I walked away wanting one, and will have it one day
[quoted image]

So cool you got a game in with Steve. I’d give a million for his thoughts on UM
I am really enjoying mine, especially as I get deeper into it
The use of the tiny standup targets in modes is well done and in a similar but more fun way that Game of Thrones uses them
Hope you land one soon!

Hears a pic with the white flips and clear slings. As you can see no color passes or reflects off the clear.
I'll snap a pic of how I have it now when I get home from work.
Being that I bought both um and hwn I now have to work sat and sun also...[quoted image]

Thanks for the pics. I like the white on the flippers

After a huge wait getting a hitch on my new truck, I was able to transport my brand new 142 and play it for the first time today.
I have to say as a huge fan of Ultraman, this game is better than I remember at the expo in GA last year.
Well done on making this game soooo special. This is spot on amazing for theming.
Took a while to pick my one NIB for my special arcade and made the right decision. Thanks Spooky and Nitro pinball for holding the deposit.

Just spent a few days playing with focus on the upper playfield - was trying to dial in the upper flipper setting
First image with yellow “x” shows preferred setting on my game
Flipping and holding in the flipper button will automatically put the ball through the posts on the upper left to assist the figure 8 (butt pretzel)
Other images show where the ball hits when the flipper tip is set in a lower or higher position

Quoted from Mrg50:

Thanks for the guidance. Could you take a “perfect alignment” photo with the flipper active? Mine is adjusted as per your picture but the ball still hits higher than optimal. Maybe the range of my active flipper extends farther than yours?

Yup. Here you go
Not an easy shot to take
Need to pull the glass, shoot ball up center ramp enough to energize upper flippers, then grab ball and hit flipper button!

7127ACCE-7B73-4E9D-B1DD-62D6A14B83C1 (resized).jpeg7127ACCE-7B73-4E9D-B1DD-62D6A14B83C1 (resized).jpeg

Quoted from Mrg50:

Thanks. That doesn’t explains my issue. my flipper is almost the same when activated. I might try a different rubber band.

Stay after it, a small adjustment makes a large shift in point of aim
LMK if you need any other pics or have additional Qs
Also note that you might want to play a few games at each test setting
Not all shots follow all the way thru the pretzel loop
I think it takes a very specific shot in an exact manner to clear the whole figure 8
In other words, I’m betting that exactly where you push the ball thru that first spinner determines the success of your shot - a little left or right might make a world of difference
That’s next on my list is to watch (or film) that shot to discover more

Quoted from RussMyers:

I just wanted to say thanks here to MT45 for posting these alignment pics.
I know ever game is a little different, but I was really having problems getting my flipper for the upper playfield dialed in and I used his pics as a guide, just set it exactly like his and Bob's yer Uncle.
Shoots beautifully now; what a great shot in such a small space - Kudos to Spooky for this one.
Really enjoying my Ultraman now.

Sorry to start 2 threads.
OK I turned the game on, waited until it finished booting completely, then plugged the USB drive into the USB cable inside the coin door.
Nothing happens at all.
Is there a button to push or should it recognize the drive and file all by itself and just start updating automatically?
Tried the same thing by plugging it into the one open USB port on the top of the board in the head - same thing, nothing happens.
I'm running Windows 10.
Should I try a different USB drive?
RM

I plugged mine into USB slot with game OFF, then turned on and waited until the "game is updating" screen. It will tell you when done
When done shut game OFF, remove USB stick, turn game back on

First impressions ... UI/display is not a ton easier to see - at least with my (older eyes).
Still seems like a lot of info on one screen, still feels "busy" and was expecting a simplified look

I saw some HUGE improvements to code and the light show - saw an "overload" of lights and sound for a big jackpot I collected - wow!
Need to get back to it and learn more before posting some more thoughtful comments

We will be revisiting all of the text in a future update. This is just the first glimpse of the new UI. Still a lot more to add. For example, all text will be getting a high contrast stroke in the future. That will help with visibility, especially when overlying the videos.

Thanks Team Spooky! Stay after it ... this is a wonderful game you've designed and needs the best interface to match
Love it!

Hmmmmm.
The display doesn’t fit in the screen. It’s going past the borders and looks odd.

Aftermarket or OEM screen?
I ask because the aftermarket allows adjustment of scale (x vs y sizing or maybe even detailed "overscan" settings)

Not sure which you have but it might be that adjustment?

Yes. All original. UM #16

Spooky beat me to it ... for the record, I have the aftermarket and scaling is perfect on the new update 1.08

Have you tried (game off) unplugging and re-plugging in the HDMI cable?

Where on the new screen are you able to "see" Ultraman's health?

Quoted from RussMyers:

I am sometimes getting periods of gameplay where the ball isn't recognized sitting on the ball lifter (on the right side, could happen either side I guess) and gameplay stops until the ball search gets it going again.
The switch above the lifter (Right Lifter) tests fine every time.
I am guessing - could the lifter height be just a smidge too low and so when the ball is sitting on the lifter sometimes it doesnt block that opto entirely.
Anyone else see this?
RM

Yes, right side only and inconsistent enough to indicate that it was not code, but frequent enough to drive me crazy!
I pulled the lifter (easy), then used a ball on a magnet to try to interrupt the opto during switch test mode
In my case, the right side opto (with PF upright) needed to be moved about 1/8”
I drilled two new holes, moved it and it’s been rock solid since

Quoted from Oaken:

Recently my machine developed an issue where the ball was hanging up against the guide and the post/o-ring on the upper upper playfield. If the ball dribbled down around the guide, it would get stuck every time. I tweaked the o-ring a bit and poof, the stuck balls went away BUT the ball would still lose a significant amount of momentum going around. Practically impossible to keep ball up there for more than one trip around the bend.
I messed around with the ball guide and the post a bit , loosening and tightening again with the little bit of play that is there. Now when I make a clean butt pretzel, I usually can just barely catch the ball with the tip of the flipper as it comes around the final loop to keep it in play and save it for a second pretzel. Is this how other owners' machines play, or should I do some more tweaking? Maybe try to reduce contact with the o-ring a touch more?

Shoot a top down image for us. I re-drilled a moved my ball guide. Made all the diff. If I can see yours I might make a suggestion

So, I upgraded my LCD on my Rick & Morty. It did make a noticeable difference in that the darks were darker and more crisp. Has anyone done the same LCD upgrade on Ultraman? Is it worth doing? Any before and after shots?
It’s an expense upgrade, I’d do it again on R&M, but I’m on the fence for UM since I’m not sure if it would improve the live action as much.

I did it, and absolutely think it was worth it

Here is an attempt at a top view and a few others.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Sorry so long to get this posted for you.
Here is mine. I moved my ball guide as you can see in the circled blue images
Compared to your ball guide, mine appears to be now be at least 1/8" moved more toward the back of the machine
Also, note that your rubber is right where mine was when I received my game (sitting proud to the line of the guide) - I had ball hang ups there on occasion
Now my guide is "level" with the rubber and NEVER hangs, and, at the same time allows for a perfect pretzel shot (figure eight) and with enough (small amount) of momentum, allows the shot across the "bridge"

Shot a short video to give a broader perspective for you

4 Weeks in the house and still loving it. Every day.

Glad there are so many that are really loving this game!
I’m in the same boat, but picked mine up April 30th
Have played it nearly every day since, now going on 3 months
I “was” playing my Godzilla non-stop before I received UM, but have only played 2 games of GZ in that 3 month period
Keep coming back to UM

15 hours till the pinside top 100 resets. If you haven’t already go give this game a fair review. It helps the decision making process for people who are considering buying a game or spot.
I’m personally loving both of these games and I can’t believe it isn’t at least top 25 at this point.
Everyone in the forums are always clamoring for more mechs, more toys, more shots, more modes, more wizard modes more more more. This game has MORE than any other offering from any manufacturer if you ask me.
Owners especially, you ought to go review it. You’ve spent time on it. You know the game. Do it for the Spooky team. These games do not deserve these low ratings. It is frankly ABSURD.

Good reminder … done @ 8.6/rating

Hey all, Anyone have an issue unzipping the new code? I know I'm late. My mac won't unzip as it isn't a know programmer and my windows machine can't unzip pkg. Thanks

Pretty sure you use the raw download. No unzipping necessary
If you’ve downloaded several copies , check to make sure your machine did not append a number to the filename

Quoted from happyclan:

I still keep getting scoop rejects on the beta capsule scoop. Is it the scoop being a simple 45 degree chunk of metal instead of the typical W/B rounded scoop. I saw a mod up earlier in the thread, but haven't heard whether it's any good.
Any modders out there?

I think this has been posted before and I KNOW I stole this part number and idea from that post ... so THANK YOU!
My scoop rejects were horrible - head on rejects were 75% +

With the addition of the new scoop deflector, now more like 25% (or less even)
Marco part #535-8250-04

You'll need to grind it using a bench grinder (or a bit more Dremel work) and drill ONE hole in the center
The grind is needed because the new deflector is just a bit too wide
When grinding each side to fit it between the existing posts, grind just enough so that when the hex bases of each post are turned the "edge" of each hex post is square to the freshly ground edge of the new scoop. At that time it's almost a force fit and you will get zero left/right movement

Not sure the center hole is a must as it's nothing more than a wood screw post but it was there on the original scoop deflector, so I drilled a center hole in the new scoop deflector and added it back

Use some blue tape on your finger to hold the nyloc nuts when placing the new scoop deflector
I was able to remove and replace without taking anything more than the Beta Capsule.
I used a box end wrench with a built in 30 degree bend to get at the nuts under the PF - tricky angles but got it done without removing stuff from underside

Note the image with the yellow area circled. Make sure that you have ground enough and it's not so tight that it does not crank down flush.
The yellow circled area is where you can see it's not quite flush. I hand filed down another 1/2mm or so and the next image shows how it then tightened down nicely

This has been a HUGE positive change to gameplay

Everything was lit up except for 2 inserts, ZELTON and ULTRA BROTHERS what's next?

DADA is very cool and fun !! my favorite challenge

Quoted from Roostking:

Surprising that this got through Spooky testing??? The rejects are horrible on the 2 location machines I play and Im dreading having to put new holes into the playfield.
Nor do I have a bench grinder.
How do such fundamental issues just get a pass into production?

No need for new holes in playfield. This scoop fits using the existing left and right holes. The scoop itself needs another center hole drilled and minor grinding on left and right edges

Quoted from digdug2084:

I am always interested in the discussions of what makes a game good or bad. I've always struggled with explaining why I liked games more than others.
For the longest time I always thought the best games were the ones I couldn't stop playing, but if that was truely the case I'd only collect 70's and 80's pins. I could put ten games on an F-14 tomcat in the time it took me to play one game of Iron Maiden. Usually, I'd be done playing pinball in about the same time with both.

I too struggled with that question and took a shot at answering it last month
BTW, love my UM

Quoted from ARTMAN:

Glad to hear it's not just me. Our right lifter will randomly stay stuck in the up position. Ball search does NOT move the right lifter. We power the game on and off and it goes back to notmal. I've also talked with support and they've told me to change the right servo, which I haven't done yet. I did confirm the lifter will work fine in the test menu as well to reset it back to normal but that ends the whole game.
If my little one didn't love the game so much, I wouldn't be playing it right now. I'd be waiting until code gets to a point where the game doesn't need to be ended mid-game because of stuff like this. Love the art, theme, layout and idea of the game, but I'm really struggling with the glaring code problems.

You may have read my post but here it is linked. May be of assistance as I experienced similar behavior. Now works 100%

Looking to replace my scoop deflector. Over the past 650 or so games mine has bent backwards a lot. I have bent it back to a 45 and it's playing better but with each game I can already tell it's starting to bend back to a more upright position. I plan on buying the scoop mode from Vimtoman when he starts selling his set of UM mods. I know others have replaced the scoop deflector with a different one but I can't seem to find the link. Can someone post the link again?
I would also like to note that I think the bent scoop deflector could also be the cause of broken beta capsules. My wife and I were playing last night and I noticed that with most rejected scoop shots the ball was shooting up and hitting the beta capsule. Just a thought. As for the beta capsules, I am now on my third but with this last one I added extra soldier around the edge of the bulb, at least on the side you can get to. So far it seems to be holding up well, even with all t abuse it seems to be taking.

I posted a step by step
