In a 5x8 Uhaul trailer you can fit 6 pins... 3 modern pins and 3 pins with heads detached and in the pulling vehicle. You can fit 3 modern pins and 2 with heads detached and in the uhaul trailer. A 5x8 sits far enough back that you can open and close the trunk of a SUV while the vehicle is attached. I do not know if you could fit 4 modern pins at once.

In my particular case I brought:

Fathom Head detached and in lead vehicle. Strapped sideways and across from Gottilieb Super Mario. Next row was Flash Gordon and Spiderman in the same way. Final row was Stern Jurassic Park, a one up, and a dolly at the very end. Pics to follow.

    Quoted from altan:

    Using a 20’ u-haul

Truck. Last time I moved a bunch of pins, I went with the 17. Loved the ramp, and it was an easy move. But I don’t remember how many pins I jammed into it.

But most of this discussion is about trailers. Which are very different.

    Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

plus one in the back of the forester.
    Thanks!

Don’t forget that your towing capacity is made up of usually 2 passengers and a tiny amount of gear (like 15 pounds). So the weight of that pin in the back might subtract from your towing capacity.

You could technically fit 6 modern sterns in a 5x8 u-haul, but 5 is the practical limit.

Here is a walkthrough of the practicalities.

You will note the space between rails is 56.5 inches. A modern Stern is 28 inches wide. You can put them side by side shrink wrapped, but not blanket wrapped. Note that being able to stand the pin up from inside the trailer is the final limiting factor on space and why I say 5. You could do 6, but you'd have to lift it from the ground while it was already standing up.

If you turn them 180 from each other, that should give you 2-3" of space--enough to get some blankets in there for padding.

In other news, I was hauling some games recently--2 with backboxes, 2 without. Here's what that can look like. There's enough space for 2 more.

Got 5 back home in the 5x8 uhaul from Pinfest. It fit a Modern Stern (James Bond), Gottilieb EM (Vulcan), Bally Williams (Dr. Who), P3 Multimorphic, and Xenon (head removed). As a lesson learned it is much easier getting the pins into the trailer leaving the front legs on, leaning them over onto their front legs in front of the trailer, then lifting the back end onto the trailer and standing it up. I actually left the legs on the last two for transport that way with no issues. I woudl also note that if you have any extra pool noodles laying around they are excellent for wedging inbetween machines to keep things nice and tight in the back yet still cushioned.

Just dumped the trailer for a real hauler. Got 9 machines in with a lot of extras, one of them an oversized Evans Bowler…
Had room for 2 more machines but wife said no.

Not sure my explorer would have pulled a fully loaded 6x12 back to ATL very well through the mountains.

Now I just need to add a hitch and …..

Is that something you can rent at u-haul? If so how much?

I bought this one, but yes there are plenty of options to rent out there. Check out Fetch or Fluid truck rentals - like uber for trucks.

I've rented several unlimited mile trucks through Fetch and they are usually Home Depot box trucks, usually about $125 a day. Way better than Uhaul truck rentals, but more expensive than trailers.

Based on those rentals I bought a used Transit 250 high roof. I make loading easy as you can stand up and move stuff around - until it is loaded like the one above. I bought some inexpensive ramps from harbor so I can wheel the hand truck up easily.

I got almost 17 mpg over 2,000 miles to Allentown and back - with a lot of side trips. My explorer gets 8 when towing and its killer on the tranny, so wasn't really an option anymore.

Owning is overkill for a show or two a year, but I'm opening my second and possibly third location and need to move machines around all the time.

Also has the added benefit of real shocks, which most trailers do not have (and no uhaul trailers have shocks). Less wear and tear on your games!

$56.58 to rent a 5x8 trailer for the York show for 3 days this year with no insurance. Not a bad deal!
