So I recently moved, and my TZ has been having some opto issues... the spiral optos sometimes work, then sometimes don’t.

It will also when Turing the game one the auto plug will just start kicking. If it doesn’t... then usually the optos are working ok.

I’ve checked wires and connections all looks good.

Just puzzled of what it might be.

Thanks everyone

Reseat J116-J118 on the power driver board. This supplies 12v to the optos. Well, technically only one connector does, but they are interchangeable between all 3 board connections. Reseating all in case they are mixed up according how the manual shows them connected.

Ok, I’ll try that. Would that explain the Auto plugger going off too from just Turing it on?

If you lose 12v power to a transmitter opto or it fails to be bright enough for the receiver to see the IR beam, the game will think there is a ball there that is blocking the beam and will fire that coil.

Also, the game doesn't detect enough balls in the trough or where they are supposed to be staged, the game thinks there could be a ball stuck there.

Another possibility, is that you may have had either the J206/J207 or J208/J209 switch matrix connector come loose at the bottom of the MPU board. May want to reseat those as well.

If any of that is no help, I suggest doing a switch edge test on all the switches and optos in case you have a whole row or column happened to fail.

I bet is that a cable connection came loose though. Wouldn't hurt to clean that opto pair in the auto launch lane.

So seems that the whole 8 column come and goes off... not working... hence the spiral optos giving issues...

Lose wire, cut wire or connection? That’s my thoughts... am I on the right track?

Quoted from Scottiiboyii:

So seems that the whole 8 column come and goes off

That is definitely more detail. Have you reseated the J206/J207 and J208/J209? Any corrosion on the pins of the wired connectors?

What voltage are you seeing at the 12v test point?

Did you check the board under the playfield? I would reseat connectors there, you can also wiggle in test mode to see if it registers any switches. Also, in switch test mode does the opto trigger the correct switch? Meaning it you test the right spiral opto does it register as right spiral? They didnt poke yoke the connectors and its possible to plug the wrong one in the main harness. I seem to remember similar behavior when I restored my TZ and plugged in the wrong connector.
