So i started up my Twilight Zone after a month of not playing to find the following errors:-
Check switch 12 - Right Outlane
Check switch 32 -Right Jet Bumper
Check switch 33 - Lower Jet Bumper
Check switch 34 - Left Slingshot
Check switch 35 - Right Slingshot
GND Short Row 2
GND Short Row 3
GND Short Row 2
GND Short Row 4
GND Short Row 5
GND Short Row 6
Ball Popper Opto Is Stuck

In the manual it says that all the GND shorts are connected to connector J208 but it would seem from the attached image they seem to be connected to J209.
The machine was fully working last time it was turned off.
Any ideas where i should start trouble shooting?

Thanks in advance all.

Mario

J208 and J209 are identical in pinout. So J208=J209, so that would still be correct.
I'm on my phone right now I can't offer anything past that until I get home though. Hopefulyy others will post in the meantime.

and measure 12V regulated at TP3 on the powerdriverboard

#5 5 years ago

Checked the switch matrix as explained in the supplied link and all seems to be well.
I'll check the voltage next and if thats ok it's on to the switched themselves i guess

Its hard to see in your picture but is there ant battery damage on that board.

Ive checked Voltages on TP1,2 & 3 and they seem to be correct:-

TP 1 - 13.51 (a bit high)
TP 2 - 5
TP 3 - 11.88

Would this suggest the board is ok or would i still need to check for battery damage?

I also have a Star Trek TNG, could i pull the power driver board from that and install it into TZ to test?

That is the same powerdriver but I doubt this is the problem.
You tested the switches directly on the CPU board and that seemed OK, meaning that the problem is on playfield/cabinet.

Disconnect 10-opto-board and clock under playfield and see if the 'row-shorts' disappear from the switch matrix.

I’ll try that and let you know.

Thanks

The short rows have gone and now I only get the following errors:
Switches 12, 32,33,34,35 and ball popper opto is stuck

#12 5 years ago

Update:
After putting back the 10 opto board the short seems to have cleared.

The clock is acting erratic in that the optics seem to be working and in the test it knows where 12:00 is but when I come out of test mode it never seems to find 12 (this is the new led version installed)
And the following errors are left:
Switch 32,36,42,44,45 and clock is broken

Those switches will stay marked as bad until the game sees them activate.

Have you gone into test mode to see if they work?

Likely the clock was taken apart for the new board, and not reassembled properly. Most likely, the hour hand and the hour interrupter was put on 180-degrees incorrectly.
You can tell by watching when the hour reading in the Clock Test changes - if it changes when the minute hand is AROUND the :30 mark, then it is *correct*. If the hour reading changes when the minute hand is around the :00 mark, it's incorrect.

The clock was working correctly before, on opening it it would seem the problem is with the 15 min sensor as it seems to operate sporadically, must be a bad connection.

The row shortages must be due to a bad connection of some kind as sometimes they appear and disappear again, all other errors have stopped.

Wasn't talling about the Short errors. Was talking about the individual switches.
Row Shorted to Ground errors will clear up as soon as, well, the row is no longer shorted.

All individual switch errors are gone too, only the clock remains.
The issue is that sporadically the row errors reappear, i'll just have to make sure all plugs and cables are connected firmly i guess.
