Well, 5 years ago my TZ restoration was nearing completion. Game would play great either 1-2 games or for hours then POOF! Pf solenoids shut down, pf lamps shut off and on, I lose sound and display, all at once. Since I work, ALL THE TIME, I was on vaca this week, time to tackle this...

Decided to find out if flipper voltage was shorting somehow to switch matrix. Found this 1/4 screw ‘holding’ coil case to coil stop. Problem is, I installed this as a new assembly from my supplier like this. At the time I thought nothing of it as it was late at night and I was near the end of soldering assemblies to harnesses with pf on rotisserie.

I’m thinking I finally found the end of Clive rebuilding my cpus and driver boards. ( if I’m right, sorry Clive!).

Looked like U14 and U20 were always the first chips to go whenever the pin randomly stopped. I’m thinking the diverter rod was carrying the high voltage through habitrail.

Just when you think you've seen it all......

Congrats on tracking that down - i bet that's a relief -

How does this happen. ?? Good catch though!

Dunno. Someone thought it was a good idea forcing that screw in during assembly. Waiting on new cpu board and we will see. Be great finally playing a long game on a chromed out new pf resto without it costing me $300-$600 a game!

To me, this sound like something different. Like either the CPU board reset or you have a ribbon cable issue, or ASIC chip needs to be pressed firmly back into the socket.

I had these symptoms on my Corvette when it was at the local arcade show. After pressing on all the socketed parts of the CPU board and reseating my ribbon cables, the game came back to life and I hadn't had an issue like that since it happened 4 years ago.

I would test the CPU board in your Demo Man if the above does not help.

I wish! Waaay beyond that. It would BLOW the chips AND the fuses on the driver board and destroy the PD board 12 volt section even after fuse replacements.
When I sent my box O boards to Clive @ Coin Op Cauldron he mentioned I had a flipper short or somehow 50+ volts was feeding into Bulb/switch matrix.

LOL - You should make some custom game cards - "1 game $300 2 games $600"

i dont really mean LOL, but....

Ok. That is kind of the detail I did not see in your first few posts and was trying to understand how it was determined chips blew.

Enter stage right, @zaza.

My TZ once was popping chips on the CPU board and I finally found the solenoid for the mini PF diverter had a lug that was barely contacting the metal housing that holds that coil. It was energizing the wire ramp and if I hit the ramp and the clock target juuuust right while playing.... *poof*

Ironically, I found it while I had the glass off and the game powered up and I was physically pointing out shots to a friend. I touched the metal wire ramp and I was leaning against one of the metal cabinet rails.... I felt a pretty good tickle that made me yelp.

It took my friend a few minutes to stop laughing.

Yeah, but I wasn’t lucky enough to get zapped.

Since I’ve ignored this pin for years I forgot some details. Maybe trying to subconsciously forget the aggravation.
