All:

So a long time ago I purchased a third magnet "kit". When I actually opened the thing up just now, there wasn't a magnet nor instructions. I am assuming this just gets the electronics going and I have to purchase the magnet separately. Is this the same magnet that is on the machine already? Size and all?

Any insight on this would be appreciated...

My opinion.
No one knew how well a magnet would work to stop the ball on the orbit shots so the code was written to energize the 3rd magnet in case the first one didn't catch the ball.

Turns out one magnet is all that's needed the vast majority of the time so the third magnet was removed from the BoM.

Since it adds nothing to the game and requires drilling a hole in the playfield I would not install it.

I have no choice. The replacement playfield has a hole for the 3rd magnet.

It catches all three balls on multiball and releases them at once and also is used on one of the modes.

So after a little digging, I found these...

https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/A-16460

https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/A-15257

https://www.pinballlife.com/williamsbally-magnet-coil-20-9247.html

Guessing I need to buy these? But the "kit" I bought had what looked like a bracket of some sort.

Yes the regular playfield parts didn't come with the kit (assuming it's a pinbits kit). I'm guessing the bracket you think came with it is the lexan piece for drilling through a stock playfield.

I don't think you need https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/A-15257 as I'm pretty sure that's just a fixed version of the other 2 piece bracket that is adjustable. Not sure why it has both listed in the manual. You need the other 2 items though. And you need the threaded core that goes into the bracket.

Couple things:

1) you don’t need to install the whole kit. If you just install the magnet it will plug the hole fine and the game will operate as normal

2) you need ROM 9.4H to use the 3rd magnet

3) If you do choose to install, make sure you add the optos in the appropriate spot. The kit may include some mounts for such optos

The caveat is for it to work the machine has to have locked the powerball in the gumball during the current game so that it knows where the ceramic ball is.

I have a kit waiting for an install on a Twilight Zone I am restoring. The machine has in pieces for a few years now. So many other things to do. I have a Mirco 3rd magnet playfield. My intention is to build it and share it at the local pinball show for one year only (so people can play the three magnet version).

After reading through that article it all makes sense. You will need the hardware mentioned in this thread by everybody who's been very helpful. I know the kit has the parts for the high power driver board.

The biggest problem I see is that if you don't have the electrical or wiring knowledge then wiring in switch #82 will be the biggest issue. If you have the GLM OSB-10B board that will solve your problem. It provides the support for switch #82. Otherwise you'll have to do some interesting wiring because the original 10-opto board in the machine has all 10 optos in use (even though there is actual switch matrix harness connections that could sense up to 14 switches (7 rows in 2 columns). The 3x LM339s have all 4 units in use so there's no spare. That's why the article wires up that extra board with the LM339 on it.

Unfortunately GLM is no longer in business even though his website is still active.

I may eventually reproduce this board but it's low on my reproduction priority. It's only used by Twilight Zone.

Thanks for the info all. I am going to proceed slowly but surely on this one.

Well quick update.

1) Got bracket/bolt/nut/magent. Installed all good.
2) Installed electronics (transistor/resistor/diode) on High power Board
3) Ordered everything for the daughter board for the opto board

Slowly but surely

yup, I had a TZ with a 3th magnet in the past and it was pretty cool with that 3th magnet.
