I like Ben but he comes off whiny from the comments. His game got shelved, it happens. "just do an LE" isn't up to him, Charlie needs to look a the company, not individual projects as separate entities for the company as a whole
Conflicting comments, one moment he's a cofounder cast aside and wronged. Next moment he's leaving due to the speed of white wood productions
Ben did an awesome job with AMH. I'm sure it's hard not to have some hurt feelings but airing stuff like that out only makes him look bad. Hopefully he and Spooky mend fences at some point. Might be hard to do with one lobbing bombs from Texas though.

2019 Pinball Preview and Predictions and Five Questions!
https://www.thisweekinpinball.com/2019-pinball-preview-and-predictions-and-questions/
Quoted from pin2d:Pinball Mentioned on ESPN
I agree that what makes pinball tough to watch are the long games. Jack danger just did a beatles launch party at logan's arcade, and even with turning off ball save and extra balls, it still took 4 hours to get through everyone. I don't know if tournaments need to switch to a timed ball? Maybe head-to-head pinball is what tournaments need to start out as to get the public interested initially.
As far as pinball not being accessible, I don't see how it's any less accessible than bowling. I've seen a lot of bowling alleys close, but a lot of pinballs go back on location. Maybe not a line of pinballs as dense as bowling, but you only really need a single working pinball at a restaurant or bar to be accessible. As far as at home practice, I don't think bowling is very accessible.. But pinball you have everything from a zizzle toy to a non-working EM you can pickup for a couple hundred bucks as long as you're willing to put in the work. There's nothing to say you have to buy a NIB JJP game to practice pinball.
Quoted from toyotaboy:I agree that what makes pinball tough to watch are the long games. I think you're correct, something like head-to-head format would better suit TV. And if the desire is for a televised sport, I think changes to that extreme are what is required, versus thinking we can significantly grow an audience around the typical, existing tournament structure.
Here are the hurdles I see pinball having compared to the typical sport (eSport or athletic):
1) Screen format: Pinball is a vertical game, and you are streaming it to a horizontal display. Viewers will not be expected to have vertical pivoting monitors, so you have to remember that a bunch of the screen real estate is wasted. You have two choices: accept this waste (what currently happens), or decide to broadcast pinball sideways and indicate the left/right is "up". Would it work? Definitely doesn't for regular players. This I think is a huge hurdle and one that is not really overcome easily.
2) Long games: As noted above. Competitive video games have matches that tend to run pretty short per round. A game like Overwatch is normally 10 minutes or less before a team switches sides. In a fighting game the whole match is over within 5 minutes. In pinball a match on a single pin can be over half an hour at the high skill level on modern machines.
3) Game diversity: If you want to watch football, you need to know one set of rules. You watch a fighting game, stage diversity is just aesthetic, and character diversity offers differing movesets but the same basic concepts apply to all (parry, block, etc.). Point being, you learn ONE game and then the rest is nuance. With pinball tournaments there tend to be lots of games, each with their own rules. The viewer won't know them all. Can your commentators explain them quickly enough? What about people constantly coming and going from the viewership, will they know?
Head-to-head format tackles a lot of this by providing for a set of objectives that can be explained at the start of the match. Game diversity is less of an issue; it's always about explaining that ONE objective (not how to get to Mustang's wizard mode in an efficient manner). Biggest problem is how we display the playfield, everything else is pretty much solved by the format.
Quoted from DennisK:1) Screen format: Pinball is a vertical game, and you are streaming it to a horizontal display. Not a hurdle. Bowling has a MUCH more vertical playing field than pinball, but they can shoot from an angle because there aren't graphics on the lane to muddy up the picture, and there are just the 10 pins to shoot for (not randomly placed targets and randomly placed lanes to aim for), and they can track the ball and zoom in as it approaches the pins. Pinball is obviously all over the place (and there is no multiball in bowling).
However, I think the way most people stream pinball whether it be PAPA or amateurs on twitch (3 cameras, one shot of the playfield, one shot of the display, and one shot of the player) it fills the screen nicely. Most low income families can also afford 40" HDTV's these days for a few hundred dollars so resolution is not an issue either.
Quoted from Hammerhead:Playing pinball is fun!
Watching pinball is like watching paint dry. Or golf.
I don't know, I think it's pretty compelling.
Watch:
Bowen Kerins on Aerosmith to win the NYC 2018 championships
Escher in the Freeplay Florida Final round
Keith Elwin at Cleveland 2018 on Centaur
Keith Elwin during the final round of Pinburg 2018
Quoted from Rondogg:I don't know, I think it's pretty compelling.

Sorry I've tried, but you can't even learn the games watching tournament play. Sure, they know the shots they need to make, but I have no idea what's happening.
The only pinball watching I enjoy is Bowen's tutorials. He explains the game and the shots, some simple and some complex strategies, and then I go try what he's taught me and make a total mess of it.
Quoted from toyotaboy:I agree that what makes pinball tough to watch are the long games. Jack danger just did a beatles launch party at logan's arcade, and even with turning off ball save and extra balls, it still took 4 hours to get through everyone.
That answer is easy... events should not shown in real time or live. Most sports coverage is highly edited and produced for consumption in via television. Commercial slots, edited for run time, content to intermix to support the storylines, etc. pinball would be no different.

Yeah an extended highlights reel would be much appreciated for the majors but I know that is a tonne of editing work. Though if someone knowledgable went through the effort and annotated it to explain the context I think it would be very popular.
Would also be interesting to see an analysis video for specific games that showed how different players used different scoring strategies in an actual tournament setting and how it turned out (or maybe examples on the same game across different competition streams). I have never seen something like that and would be an awesome learning and resource.

Hmmmmm. I don't think even Aerosmith-quality artwork can save that turd of a layout (especially at a $5500 price point).
