Quoted from TreyBo69:

Quoting Robert
On deposits
>Any money that is coming in from customers right now in full payments or deposits is being held in an account. It isn’t being used to buy parts, its not being used to pay payroll…I don’t consider what we’re doing now a pre-order. A pre-order is – hey give me the money because I go out and I can’t buy the parts and I can’t do anything without that money…we haven’t called this a pre-order and it isn’t a preorder.
Then why do you need the money?

I would be much more comfortable with this statement if the funds were truly going into a 3rd party escrow account with the terms and release conditions fully outlined. Honestly anyone sending them money at this point is taking a huge gamble.

It would of made sense to build a standard machine with off the shelf components to help figure out design and manufacturing before attempting to build out all these brand new assemblies and the pinbar system. Could of innovated with cash coming in the door. Now they will need to ramp up manufacturing and figure out all the complexities of these new mechs and systems all at the same time.

Reminds me very much of when JPOP decided to use non standard backbox hinges, custom leg bolts, custom sized glass. All these things may of made sense eventually, but not when you are trying to get your very first game out the door.

Not convinced these new components won't push the BOM up too high either. I hope they have that all figured out. At the number of units they are trying to build now, they aren't going to get the same economies of scale either.

Quoted from toyotaboy:

So let's say they build 500, and let's assume they average a profit $2k each (I doubt it's that high by the time you pay labor but let's be nice). So that's a million dollars.
"Good news investors, I got 1/30th of your investment back after 4 years (because pinball is easy).. I swear the next pinball is gonna make up for the other 29 million.. except I'm gonna need like another 2 million to develop the next title."

Looking at their bill of materials I fail to see how they will hit 2k a unit. Maybe on the higher end trim levels.

Quoted from Bublehead:

I think this prevents a lot of people from pursuing more homebrew projects... there are not that many people out there who are true makers with the background to do everything. And even if you have the skill, the TIME is what will eat you alive.

With homebrew you either invest time or money... You either have to learn it yourself or since it is a one-off pay a high price to have someone else do it.

Not to discourage anyone, but homebrew will certainly eat up more time and money than anyone could ever expect.

Also very surprised they are creating two versions of the pinbar / lock down bar mech and two versions of the back box design. Seems like added complexity to make different versions of the game this early in the run. Hard enough getting the parts in and building a single version of a game.

Quoted from benheck:

I'm not saying that design doesn't has merits, just that it would be REALLY expensive and also explode their "parts liability" in THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES!!!

You can tell it was the prototype or homebrew mentality. Build something awesome just because you can or because you think it is a good idea.

It also shows that there wasn't much manufacturing experience because no one was looking at the time to manufacture or the bill of material on these items.

Easy to prototype something in lots of ways, hard to manufacture 1000 of them and make enough profit to make the next one.
