There was a time in my career when these would have been dream jobs... unfortunately DR probably doesn’t pay what I am making now for slinging code or engineering work, at least to start.

So quiet...Midwest Gaming is obviously out or there would have been an announcement. My guess? They got the BTTF license a few months ago and are reskinning something so that it's part of the initial release.

Mine is that they are still trying to get JPop to get his fingers out of his arse

Well, looking forward to whatever they turn out even if it’s a pin called Finger Ass

I heard its FingHer ass. Think of it as a Playboy for the 21st century, with pornhub contributing assets. Just what I heard!

someone posted a link to deeproot's patent for a pinball cabinet on deadflip stream the other night. im for innovation, but im also for JUST MAKING A PINBALL MACHINE.

I heard there are 4 flipper in the shape of fingers and the flipper buttons are ballon knot shaped. In the Finger ass pin.

That's some extremely excessive and unnecessary hardware for a pin. I thought they were trying to push prices down...adding a bunch of crap under the playfield that has nothing to do with gameplay isn't how you do it.

Looks like they borrowed my idea for four playfields in one cabinet. Pull out the mech. as shown, turn it right or left for the next playfield, return mech. to cabinet.

#2566 5 years ago

I like it.

#2567 5 years ago

Is that some sort of projector in the back of the cab?

Now THIS is pod racing!

Or possibly “quad assembly”...

Or the “real quickstep solenoids”?

Maybe they got the ALIEN license and this is the “chestbuster” toy!

#2569 5 years ago

Seem like a cartidge system to me. No way they could get 4 full size playfields on a rotating arm, in any decent sized cab.

that thing better have a cabinet made of concrete to keep it planted and stable when you pull a PF out that far out on pivot arm...

#2571 5 years ago

Pulling a playfield has never been an issue, who would buy a pinball because it has a new system. They really should spend their money on building good games.

This reminds me an awful lot of Heighway Pinball design.
Look at the backbox and the cartridge for the glass.
I going out on a limb and calling BS that this has anything to do with Deeproot.

#2573 5 years ago

Just what every pinball machine needed, a built in rotisserie, that has to be a jpop idea....

#2574 5 years ago

I think that´s freaking cool.. but maybe you have to bolt the legs into the ground ..

I agree... have to see more but if they perfect this it would be awesome.

#2580 5 years ago

I can’t wait to see the 80 page patent for their on/off switch.

#2581 5 years ago

And I'm just hoping they can make a more affordable (under $5K) game that shoots nice and fun to play. There is still room to cater to operators and bar-cades.

I can’t see how you’d look at that cabinet patent and think “cheap.”

Stern was selling games with playfield pegs for $5300. What do you think a game with a built in rotisserie system, about 3 sets of rails and hinges, and an elaborate counterweight system to keep the entire thing from flipping over and
Crushing you to death is gonna cost?

#2583 5 years ago

To me it looks like the playfield sits on rails ro make the playfields swappable, my guess is generic cab art or magnetic decals, swap the playfield, translight and side decals and you have a new game. Only one cab needed, possiblydo it with one or 2 connectors for a quick easy swap

Guess I got that one wrong (Please don't mention this to my wife )

That's pretty far fetched to think they used a counterweight system, they're probably going to use a hydraulic system to raise and lower the legs to balance the weight.

#2588 5 years ago

Actual patent has tons of other information related to backbox (pillar system), playfield glass movement, use of hydraulics to automate playfield movement into and out of cabinet (along with 4 positions it can be in), and more. Pictures throughout are very informative.

See https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2018183948A1/en?assignee=DeepRoot&oq=assignee:(DeepRoot) and then click on the PDF.

Agree with previous poster that this would enable playfield swaps pretty easily so the idea of one cabinet and multiple games seems likely.

edit --> dang, 1 minute behind mbwalker

Which also explains their desire and push to have so many different games available at launch. The idea of a 'platform' isn't compelling without different games that can be swapped. It will be awesome if their games address the 'space-limited' problem in the pinball hobby.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0009] The present invention improves the basic functions of pinball cabinets. The present invention improves the system for accessing the playfield without removing or handling glass. The glass top assembly is lifted from the front edge and rotates upwards around an axis created by a four bar linkage assembly. The use of a four bar linkage assembly lifts the glass top assembly over the top panel which provides an unobstructed area to access or remove the playfield. Furthermore, the present invention calls for an automated or power assisted lifting mechanism through use of pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders.

[0010] The present invention improves the mechanism used to fold down the backbox without interfering with the artwork on the exterior surfaces of the backbox and side panels. The present invention utilizes a pillar assembly which permits an upper sleeve to slide over a lower sleeve and eventually fold over the lower sleeve. The present invention does not mount or utilize any components that interfere with the exterior surfaces of the backbox or side panels.

[0011] The present invention improves access to the playfield for servicing and maintenance through utilization of two pairs of four bar linkage assemblies. The playfield exists in four positions with the first position in the cabinet ready for use. The second position exposes the playfield outside of the cabinet but partially positioned over the cabinet. The playfield is positioned outside the cabinet and not above the cabinet in the third position. The playfield remains generally level with the ground in the second and third positions. In the second and third positions, the playfield may rotate 360 degrees such that the underside of the playfield may be rotated to be in the up position. The fourth position results in the playfield rotated down where it is perpendicular to the ground. Each position provides different advantages for accessing all sides of the playfield.

[0012] Due to the limited space within a pinball cabinet that exists under the playfield, the mechanisms for the above components and systems are designed around each other as spacing for one component may interfere with spacing of other components. The present invention provides a single solution for the problems of accessing the playfield, servicing the playfield, and folding down the backbox without interfering with the artwork.

This has been an unwanted and poorly
Received feature whenever it’s been tried. Making a game “swap friendly” has sold exactly
Zero extra pinball games in history.

#2593 5 years ago

I personally wouldnt want to swap playfields, id want a cab for each. Possibly location play, but how many operators would want to do conversions

Quoted from amkoepfer:

I get that this is potentially a great idea - but as Levi pointed out, who cares? If you have the space to store extra playfields, which are 1/3 the size of the whole machine, why wouldn’t you just leave them up and playable? It IS a good idea for ops IMO, except now you have these unprotected playfields that have to be carefully stored.

If the glass is somehow a transparent LCD
Screen that changes how the playfield and mechs look, then I’d be more on board. Still skeptical. But maybe this is just an idea they are sitting on; it may never materialise

#2595 5 years ago

Keep in mind a transparent LCD glass can only darken things it can't add light. Unless it's OLED but that would be unaffordable at this time.

Also you'd have to use a camera to track the players head and eyes to render the correct perspective.

#2596 5 years ago

Heighway really nailed this concept from a home user practicality standpoint of easily swappable playfields (without the need for convoluted equipment) about as good as its going to get....and lets all remember that Pinball 2000 was designed for arcades as a one way upgrade/retheme kit with permanent cab decals etc so thats not really an apt comparison. The concept was an utter failure for Heighway for all the reasons it won't work for Deep Root or anyone else:

1. Cost - a populated playfied is going to cost over half the cost of a new machine if not up to 75%, with no real cost saving in shipping either
2. Storage - As Levi pointed out, storing populated playfields, even in some kind of custom case (adding significantly to cost), is going to be almost as cumbersome as another machine. Now imagine, 2, 3, 4 different ones.
3. The biggest elephant in the room: forward and backwards compatibility. Computers - including communication standards & protocols, processor requirements among other things all evolve much faster than mechanical things. Even if they nail it out of the gate - and unlike Heighway - don't need to vastly change the computer specs before multiple machines get released.....at some point rather quickly, things won't be backwards compatible unless the entire guts of each game are contained under each playfield and the cabinet is merely a shell... in which case the playfields alone will be 80% the cost of a new machine

#2597 5 years ago

Isn’t PF swap what Multimorphic does sort of?

And Heighway was theoretically heading in that direction

I can’t see it myself.

Gonna have to swap a pf out every few games when you want to change it up?

I don’t care how easy it is. Doesn’t sound appealing

But that is obviously how they are trying to bring cost down

Could you incorporate slot machine animations and graphics that appear on the glass now?

Not sure how it’s done but it’s really cool

#2600 5 years ago

We all buy one DR cabinet, then each title comes in its own shipping “Roady” case. These will be packaged so you can take them as luggage, and they will expect we take or “favorite” DR games with us to our friends house, who, having a DR cabinet, allows us to plug it in and play.

Sounds like a viable solution to the problem of “we got to go over to Dan’s house to play the latest DR title he just bought” and could you imagine a parlor of empty cabinets where we all bring are favorite titles and play? Like maybe a pin-alley?
Anyone getting where this is going?
