Who has fond, nostalgic memories of time they spent with friends at food trucks? Who wants their basement bar or mancave to remind people of a food truck? Who takes their family every sunday after church for lunch at a food truck? How many memorable, popular, nostalgic films or TV shows have been made where food trucks figure prominently? (I can think of one movie I've seen where a food truck is a major setting. It's a Dutch Paul Verhoven film called "Spetters" and it features many penises and gay rape scenes. It's not gonna help sell a lot of pinball machines.)
Total apples and oranges situation. Not sure why people have been trying to make this comparison for a year.
I assumed Diner might’ve come out while Seinfeld was the biggest show on the planet but it appears to have pre-dated that. I can imagine it working in the era prior to most games having a property associated with it, but it’s a lot harder to pull off now considering all of the licensed themes. Why buy a food truck while Mandolorian or whatever is it’s competition. I think Diner is a fun game. Video games seem to still do pretty well when a new game not based on a popular brand or property comes out as long as it is a good game, and I hope that pinball can figure out how to do that again also. But Food Truck and Magic Girls aren’t going to do it.
If they want to sell out home users before they've even considered playing them, licensed themes are the way to go. Few people are going to buy a non-licensed theme sight unseen. As we've seen repeatedly, the game can be complete shite with non-existent code, but sell out on theme alone.

Because it was 1990 and arcades were the big thing and it was a different era all together that you can't compare to today. Plus they only made just over 3500 of them. For comparison they made 5000 rollergames. Its "popularity" today is that its cheap and a decent game made by mark ritchie, and, as others have said, fits in certain motifs outside of being an affordable decent pin.

When Diner was made - themes were used to help attract a player to walk up and put a quarter in and tie the game's play elements together into a story... the home buyers today buy themes based on what they want in their home.
It's a different thing...
Today no one would say "I'm really interested in buying a white water rafting game" or "I'm really interested in buying a tornado game".. but people will pay thousands for a whitewater or whirlwind because they were memorable and enjoyable arcade games. It's not that no one likes whitewater rafting, or someone is trying to sell to those enthusiasts.. it's that the purpose of the theme and the role it plays in game sales has radically changed as well. Today, themes are part of the image, not just the game's story.

Actually Road Show is this pin... and being stuck in traffic due to construction was when Pat got the idea... he actually said so at the Pin Expo conference on game design when we, the audience, all helped him design Monopoly...
Here's a nice, Pinside friendly, non licensed theme we can all get behind... it involves trucks but not of the food variety.
I give you- Fed-Up... a package delivery nightmare.
The backglass is a row of three racing delivery trucks, FedEx, UPS, and a simple delivery van with "Hometown Delivery", all with comic character delivery drivers hanging out their windows, screaming at our hometown hero (the player) in his rickety old delivery van. The artwork of the trucks overlap, obscuring the "EX" and "S" leaving the title, Fed UP, and the theme is based on picking up and delivering packages... the more you pick up and deliver, the higher your bonus, plus all kinds of multipliers, boost scoring, etc... So the playfield is a cityscape under glass, with all kinds of places represented for pick ups and drop offs... Timed hurryups as a call comes in to pick up, if you miss the hurryup, a competitor gets the package. All kinds of combos and hurryups driven by lit arrow shots are needed to complete delivery. You could pile on all kinds of modes, wizard modes, comedy modes, to flesh it out. Mark Ritchie would have a blast with this... sort of like Fish Tales, but a comic take on peoples dislike of delivery services in general, and as the quirky character of our hometown delivery driver, you get to put a thumb in the eye to the big guys... throw in a Blue Amazon Prime van in the backglass as a distant 4th place along with DHL in 5th...
So a great title for Pinball operators, it would likely have been a good earner back in the day, but sadly no one would want to que up to buy it for HUO... But hey, you never know what will connect with the HUO market unless it is another super hero/action figure laden, franchised, nostalgic Dad rock, or Disney asset licensed retread.

This is all goofy conjecture - they can't even produce one game. Talk of any other titles, licensed or not means nothing when they have not manufactured one single game in over 3 years.

Great idea!! I love this - be a fantastic fun homebrew if someone took it on. I’m seeing Amazon as this evil force that gets in your way when you hit the wrong shot. ‘Bad day’ mode features single raining shot you try to hit to ‘toss’ the package into someone’s yard or porch with the shaker going off on each successful hit (‘delivery’)

Amazon could be a difficulty setting where you have to make all the shots in very limited time, the flippers occasionally overheat and die, with an optional piss bottle accessory.

I highly recommend this movie as they’ve somehow been able to create a movie full of A-List actors that has absolutely no central conflict or antagonist. It’s a 20 million dollar Hallmark movie.
