Been having some strange issues with a Twilight Zone and decided to start at the begining by checking the transformer jumper when i noticed some cut, taped and butchered wiring. I can't seem to find in the manual the proper wiring for 110v 60hz anywhere. This may or may not have been the cause of a Pinsound board failure which i am afraid will do the same to the replacement and at more then $300 a pop i'd like to be sure. All the voltages check out ok on the test points but the input voltages on J102 seem a little high.

Look in the WPC Schematics manual, there are pinouts for 115, 105, 210 voltage. It looks like your transformer was changed, and then tech/owner went the cheap route and just cut wires instead of creating or using the right plug.

And if you don't HAVE a WPC Schematics manual - get one. They're on PDF around the intrawebs, and come in VERY handy.

I'm looking at the .pdf now, what page?

#4 8 years ago

Should be the first page, right after the table of contents..

#5 8 years ago

I'm not sure how to follow this?

I see this but it doesn't really tell me how to wire for said 120v?

No, that's the GAME manual.

You need the WPC Schematics manual. (part number 16-9473-1, dated May 17 1993.) It actually has the scejmatics to the MPU, Power board, audio board, fliptronics boards, as well as cabinet and power supply wiring.

Again, it's a great PDF (or real manual..) to have on hand in situations like this. Google for 'WPC Schematics filetype:pdf' on google, you should find it.

As a note, some copies of the PDF have a small misprint, which could lead to confusion. Don't look at the large section on the left under '120VAC USAGE' sections, instead, look in the center area, dotted box that says 'Optional Power Connectors'. That's the plug needed for those voltage levels.

I see now.

Yup! Use the bottom pic there, again, as the top one (left side) has a few issues. However, the left section DOES show how a common DBV is wired. The 103.5 interlock is wrong, as is the 120AC section's plug that reads 103.5VAC (it should read the same as the other, 115VAC).

I think i'm missing a secondary plug though...

The plug on the transformer, with ONLY the black and white wires that go to your power box, that should have the jumpers on it. (Unless you have a DBV plug in place - but in the pictures, there's not one there.)

So, you can either re-plug both sides - the side from the transformer, and a new 115v feed/jumper plug, or just connect the tires up from the transformer that need to be jumpered and leave it like it is. (Personally, I'm a neat freak - I'd order new molex plugs, and wire them up how they're supposed to be.)

Quoted from 3rdaxis:

This may or may not have been the cause of a Pinsound board failure

Although it is not the way (quite dangerous there), it seems jyumpered for 115Vac.
Does the Pinsound board gets its power direct from the transformer ? And is it supposed to be 2x18Vac or 2x13Vac ?
This transformer in pictures above is 2 x 18 Vac.

The Pinsound board gets power from the supply not directly from the transformer. We put a new Pinsound board in and while the game was in attract mode we heard a very loud "POP" come threw the speakers and shut it off right away. I believe its' 2x18Vac plus the 5Vdc and ground. Not sure though...

From the website it looks this board is compatible with Twilight Zone and thus 2x18Vac should not be a problem for the amplifiers.
