I have a sample TZ and I was playing a game today and everything was working great and then the color DMD died and the flippers died and I could hear what sounded like the trough kicker kicking over and over and I could smell something burning. I powered off and tried to find the source of the burning before turning it back on to test. I could not find the source. I was able to power back on by switching back to the original DMD and had the message. "Check Fuses F115 and F116 J112 and Opto 12V Supply" I replaced F116 (F115 was ok) and powered back up. Things seems better but I get the Check switch 73 - 75 - 76 - 81 - 83 (all Optos) I started testing the rest of the fuses and found that F501 on the audio board was blown. I replaced it and powered on and it blew again right away. Looking closer, I see there is damage to C28. (picture attached) Oddly, there is still sound, not sure how much because I stopped here.

Not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Quoted from Parker_tz:

This might work Replace c28 before you burn board any more try a different opto board or look for anything burnt on your options board. Replace the fuse and look at the schematics and see what comes after the capacitor and replace it

Thanks. I also have a working Bride of Pinbot Sound Board I could swap in. I am just afraid to fry that one too. I wonder if there is a chance that it is getting too much power from another source

Ok. I put the Bride of Pinbot sound board in without even changing the ROM chips. It powered up great, no blown fuses. Played a little with the sounds from BoP, went into switch test and all the switches were back. I put the TZ sound board back in with the blown fuse and burnt cap. Powered it on, went into switch test, everything checked out. Played a couple games and sound was working and as far as I can tell everything is working again, even with the bad sound board. Not sure how that is even possible.

Quoted from Coyote:

Do NOT keep playing with that sound board. If that cap went, others could go, and those Tant caps could start a fire, FFS.
Get the board re-capped, or risk damaging more.

Thanks Coyote. I will definitely recap that board and make sure it is stable before I play it again. I hope Great Plains has them all in stock. I know Marco has the others, but I didn't see the TANT caps.

Quoted from Coyote:

Can get them from Digikey and Mouser too. I recapped ALL the tants on my audio board after the same one blew on mine. Per the wiki here https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Williams_WPC#Blown_1uF_or_10uF_Tantalum_Capacitor I jumped the size up on a few of them (so much that I had to mount them up-right and not down!), but I feel better now that it won't catch fire and destroy my game. Heh.

I was able to get them all from Digikey and ordered them last night and they already shipped and should be here Tuesday. I bumped a couple up, but was afraid of the size thing too. Guess I should have went bigger. LOL

Thanks again for the advice.
