So I’m thrilled to share that I’m joining the TZ club tomorrow. After years of admiring this legendary pin from afar (I’ve actually only played this pin maybe 6-8 times total in my life), I found a beautiful original example to trade for. I’m giving up a beautiful MB plus cash for this very clean TZ with color DMD. I love MB. I hope to own it again someday. But the opportunity to own a very nice TZ is too compelling to pass up. The theme, the many shots, the deep code. I did my research before taking the dive. I am thrilled to become a TZ owner. My wife and I have owned other Pat L titles - CSI, Ripley’s, Dialed In, Shrek. We love the way he packs shots into a playfield. He likes chaos, it seems, with shots from multiple flippers and angles. I tested this particular TZ and it plays great. Good, strong flippers and smooth shots. Cabinet isn’t faded yet. I’ve picked out a couple mods and decals, but I will try not to go overboard. They offer SO many amazing mods for this pin, it would be easy to get carried away.

We will pick up our new TZ on Monday and bring her home. Can’t wait. I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of this amazing, benchmark pin. I understand Lawlor was given a very wide latitude to make this game as amazing as he wanted after the incredible success of TAF. I wonder if pinball reached a zenith of sorts in 1993 and if any machine will approach TZ in terms of complexity and grandiosity in the future. Can’t wait to open the door...

Anyone happen to have backup/extra plastics and could sell me one of these?

Thanks!

I have a complete set I believe. They are used. If you might be interested in some I can go through them and let you see The quality

That’s great! PM me? Thank you!

Quoted from Scoot:

BTW, I just wanted to show a little before and after using a wire wheel, buffer and some elbow grease.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Excellent job! I usually replace the receiver if it’s really crusty, but that’s like new and saves $100. I need to work on that skill!

Also, I’m looking to rejoin the club soon after a couple years away. Hoping to powder coat my next one or go with chrome. Can someone post a pic of your TZ with either a black sparkle powder, or chrome? I would love to see some pics. Thanks!

Help I’m steppin’ (back) into the Twilight Zone…more like the cash register zone! Found a beautiful example, and already depleting my funds on mods. I even found a spinning slot machine and replica mystic seer for my topper. One of the very best pins from my favorite era. I chose a restored TZ over a Godzilla premium nib. Nothing against Goddy, but I’ll have more chances at another nib for the next year or two. I couldn’t pass on a pristine TZ. Can’t wait to get lost in the zone again!

#12713 1 year ago
Quoted from Gorgar666:

Godzilla’s falling off the truck everywhere.

It is starting to look that way. I’m very happy I went with TZ when I had the chance. Zilla is a great Stern title. But I’ll have lotsa chances at one.

I know this is probably a silly question, but does anyone have a blue or clear clock housing they would sell me? Mine is red, which is fine, but I prefer the blue or clear. I would buy or include my red + $.

Thank you!

#12723 1 year ago

You are right! I thought I had checked all the usual sources. I forgot Planetary. I ordered a new clear dome. Blue would be awesome, someday!

Quoted from simonlindsay:

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice for the repair of my TZ power board - it is really appreciated. My wife and I fly to the U.S.A. on Wednesday and will be taking in some pinball games in SF and some touristy stuff, the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, a quick visit to Pinball Wizard in SLC and up to Pinballmania in Washington Terrace as well as Yosemite NP, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, The Arches NP and hopefully see some fall colours in our old stomping ground around the ski resorts of Ogden, UT.
I will resume the task of sorting out my TZ power board when I return to the U.K.

Wow, what a fantastic trip! My wife and I loved visiting San Fran, Zion, Grand Teton, etc. on trips over the years. I’m envious.

What’s your vote between all chrome armor, about $2,000 total for legs, rails, lock bar, hinges, bolts, and coin door, or, sparkle black powder coat called Spiced Black (looks like space) for around $500 total? The color I’m considering is below…
I love chrome, but damn.

Quoted from ray-dude:

Several months I asked if anyone had installed the black PDI mirror blades in their machine. I ended up ordering a set and installed this evening.
I think the darker color fits better with the theme than the normal mirror blades. Are they worth the 2x premium? That I’m less certain of (although these things are always in the eye and wallet of the beholder)[quoted image][quoted image]

Black mirrors look amazing on TZ!

Quoted from ray-dude:

I waited as long as I could before canceling, but that was ~6 months ago. I hope they've been able to spin up production again.

I just ordered one for my TZ that is shipping to me soon. I hope Ingo is still producing these. I paid for one with blue LEDs and shipping. Fingers crossed.

#12803 1 year ago
Quoted from Mad_Dog_Coin_Op:

Let us know. I gave up on Ingo.

Not cool if he’s got the store open and accepting payments but not shipping anything. Hopefully it ships. We shall see.

#12806 1 year ago
Quoted from sizzler747:

I just installed the Casper board 2 days ago in my machine, works great. I wanted the ingo board as well with the color changing lights but I seen that nobody was getting any shipped to them. I emailed to see if they actually had any in stock but no response so I went with the Casper board.

Good to know. I saw the Casper board was readily available too, which is good to know. People raved about the Ingo board, so I ordered one before I noticed people have had issues lately. If I receive one in the next few weeks, I’ll share that. If not, I’ll try to back out the payment and order a Casper board. My TZ is pretty recently restored, so it may have a Casper board already. I’ll know soon…

#12814 1 year ago
Quoted from Redfive05:

Unless you have $130 to just throw into the wind and see what happens stay away from the Ingo board.

Fortunately, that $130 was pretty obnoxious and I was happy to be rid of it. Lol. Thanks for the heads up, I will give them a couple weeks and request a refund. Now I just need STI to pick up my TZ and ship it to me!

#12826 1 year ago
Quoted from Kerry_Richard:

Some guys like white legs & armor on their games like TZ & WH20. It's not for me however, if you like it that's all that matters.
BTW: I feel a white powder coated TZ or WH20 would be worth less in value to me, than those games having their standard stainless steel finish.
Kerry

White powder on TZ could be unusual. But it always comes down to what the owner likes. I have a WH2O that came with a really well done white sparkle powder coat. It didn’t bother me or anything at first, I could take it or leave it. But now I really like it, and recently swapped my mountains for white snow mountains. Some people don’t like it, but I do! I doubt it would affect value much. A high-end WH2O is worth a lot these days, and while a few buyers might prefer stainless, that’s not an expensive conversion in the grand scheme considering the value of these pins. I just ordered a new TNA with the black powdercoat. But I prefer stainless on TNA, so I ordered all the armor in stainless from Pinball Life for $350 or so. Tomato Tomäto!

I waited for about a year just recently canceling. Slow responses and repeated bad excuses of it ships in 2 more weeks for the last nine months. I was willing to wait and did very patiently, only asking for update every couple months. In the end i felt, i didn’t want to support the lack of honesty.

I’ll give it a few weeks. Hopefully I get it. Otherwise, refund request, then INTERPOL, then hired goons.

Is it difficult to replace the clock board? My restored TZ has intermittent clock glitches, so I ordered a Casper board from Marco. I have an order for one of the boards from overseas people used to rave about, but I guess they aren’t really shipping them anymore?

EDIT: I found the install instructions on Caspers website. Seems very easy to follow. Should be fine. Also, order direct from them for $8 or so savings PLUS free shipping. I had other items to get from Marco, but that’s a good deal for others to note.

Quoted from Coyote:

Be careful on disassembly

Quoted from bakerhillpins:

It's not really that complicated to tear down and re-assemble, but then again the instructions in the manual don't read really well at all. See Ed Cheung's write-up as I found very clear. About 3/4s of the way down.
https://www.edcheung.com/album/album08/pinball/tz.htm
Look for the section "Reassembling the TZ clock gears".

Thanks! I will be careful during the install to keep the gears aligned correctly.

#12937 1 year ago

Getting my newly added TZ customized to my liking. I added a color DMD, target decals and a few other mods (street lamp, chrome spiral sign, soon also a spinning slot machine, etc). I still need to install mirror blades, then decide on chrome vs black sparkle powder coat. I added clear flipper buttons with color-changing LEDs today, and my clock shooter rod is coming soon! Thanks to James in NY for this excellent deal. A true keeper.

Quoted from Gorgar666:

LCD or LED ColorDMD for TZ?

Both, dual monitors. Get more done that way.

I have LCD in mine, which I usually choose because I like the scan option, but many prefer LED, which I agree does appear slightly brighter with better contrast, if you don’t mind the dots. But I have LED in my TOTAN and LCD in others. Both huge upgrades over the stock DMD.

Quoted from Coyote:

Mine is marked Apr 8th.

Mine was born 5/25/93. But was later heavily restored with a new playfield and cabinet, so…reborn? I decided to go with polished chrome from Chris Royalty for my armor upgrade. My son can damn well put himself through college.

#13002 1 year ago

I just noticed my TZ was restored by Dan Goett. His bio says TZ is his favorite game to restore. Anyone else have experience with him? I’m impressed with his work so far. Sorta HEP-lite.

Quoted from GRB1959:

Agreed that the 'Walking Distance' episode of TZ is one of the best with Gig Young. Ronnie Howard also had a small bit role in this episode. TZ is still a classic television series after 6 decades.
Gord

Yep! Ronnie is like 5 years old in it. Gig had a tumultuous career and life, which ended tragically in the late 70’s just a few years after he won acclaim for his role in They Shoot Horses Don’t They? I’ve always liked Walking Distance, one of the nostalgia episodes, like Young Man’s Fancy. I also love The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and What You Need. My all time fav is Nick of Time with William Shatner.

A Game of Pool is a good one, with the late, great Jonathon Winters. The Masks is creepy. One of the best also.

Quoted from Manny65:

Looks amazing!
Btw have you got metal leg protectors under the blue plastic ones to hold them off the cabinet decals? If not then you should look into it, otherwise overtime the plastic ones will damage the decals.

I do, thanks for the reminder tho. There is a slight wrinkle of the decal where the metal protector pinches it. I like the look of light blue protectors on TZ. They shouldn’t make matters worse with metal protectors under them. I might apply a little heat to remove the wrinkle and leave them off.

#13022 1 year ago
Quoted from Manny65:

Unsure where the metal protector can pinch the decal - I assuming you removed the decal from under the metal protector (normally have a little clearance around the edge of the protector but this is all hidden behind the leg itself)?

Exactly, whoever applied the cab decal didn’t remove the decal from under the metal stand-off/leg protector, instead covering it, and creating a pinch at the corners. It’s mild, and I may trim it myself.

Hi TZ clock experts! I just replaced my Pinball Lizard clock board that wasn’t working right with a Casper board. Took the time to swap the housing and new face decal too. Looks nice, I think, but I cannot get this clock to 12:00 noon or to work properly. I read the install instructions carefully, and tried to follow the Ed Cheung instructions for lining up the gears correctly too, but I’ll admit I can’t follow it. My white gears feel locked in place when the game of off, so I can’t move them, I can only reposition the large black gear that drives the hour hand. My game doesn’t send the clock to 12:00 noon on power up, so I’m not sure where to start.

If someone here is super familiar with the clock gears and how to get it set to 12:00 noon and could PM me, I would really appreciate it! Maybe someone can walk me through setting the gears.

The photo shows my new clear clock and white prototype face decal, with the hands set to noon, which is how I installed it. But on power up, it changes the clock to weird random times. Definitely doesn’t find 12:00.

Thank you!

Installed my new clock board, housing and face today! Had trouble getting the 12:00 setting at first, despite the instructions and Ed Cheung tips. I found this step-by-step on Pinball Info, which explained the tiny teeth on the white gears and how to align them. Now it’s 12:00 exactly on start up!

Question for you mod guys. I bought one of the mini TVs that display images, and connect to the TP1 12v pole on the power driver board. However, I have a Rottendog driver board, which doesn’t appear to have the 12v pole. Anyone know if I can tap into the 12v power supply safely for this mod?

Here is the original and what it looks like on my board.

Quoted from Mikespinball:

Here is a TZ I did for a friend. I did remove the art work and repainted the cabinet before installing the Radcals. I always remove the old decals, it's just something I always do.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

That looks fantastic! I’ve done 4-5 pins with Radcals, and removing the original art, or at least painting over it before applying the Radcals is a must. I put Radcals on my restored Fish Tales and decided to leave the original art alone. It shows through slightly, and because the art doesn’t quite line up, it has a subtle double image. TZ art is darker, so that might not happen, but it’s a good move. I love seeing fully restored pins. That TZ looks awesome!

Quoted from Frogroar:

Owners of a TZ with deep black legs and side rails, could you post a pic of your machines please? I’m hesitating between going for mirror finish chrome or black…

I was debating the very same decision. I love the feel and durability of powder coat, and chrome just begs for fingerprints. I went with chrome, I have a few pins with powder already. I think it’s spectacular, but a subtle glossy sparkle black would look amazing too! Here is my recent chrome…

Quoted from Smokenmirrors:

My question is whether the light red housing is factory original — if it is I’ll try to repair it and if not I’ll replace it with a new white housing

I just replaced my red housing with the clear one, and I really like it. I wanted blue, but I can't find one. I do have my red one that I replaced, if you can't find a new one and you want to stick with red. I'm happy to send it to you.

Quoted from Miguel351:

Was it the semi-opaque clear like the original, or was it completely glossy like that red one Zee posted? I've been trying to get my hands on a completely transparent/glossy clear housing for a while now. Seems everybody that makes the clear, makes it semi-opaque like the factory original.

Here is the one I just installed…

Quoted from Dan1733:

What is the easiest and safest way to create holes in radcals (for bolts) without ruining the radcals? Exacto knife? Drill?

I use a very small diamond shaped bit with my dremel and it cuts very easily and is easy to control. I’ve tried an exacto and made mistakes. I use a flashlight from inside the cabinet to identify the holes for bolts through the Radcal. Then I gently press the bit through the center and cut the hole out. It’s pretty easy. Others use utility knives or drills. Whatever works for you! This works for me. I’ve done about 5 pins in Radcals now.

#13177 1 year ago
Quoted from Dan1733:

Thank you
Cannot figure out why Mirco sells radcals without at least having holes pre-drilled on the front decals for the buttons.

Because each cabinet is slightly different, and the most important thing is that the Radcal is lined up correctly at the front edge of the cabinet and just under the rail. Then you can identify your flipper hole location and cut it. If the flipper hole was pre-cut, the front edge of the Radcal might overhang the front of the cab, requiring a lengthy trim, or be receded back and not be flush with the front corner at all, which would be hard to fix. That’s my understanding anyway!

#13178 1 year ago
Quoted from mbaumle:

For the larger holes, like flipper buttons, start button, and the plunger hole, start it with a drill bit, then take a drum sander attachment on the end of a Dremel and gently sand the hole diameter wider until you hit wood. Kinda like a router.

Exactly. He said it better than I. I use this method for all my bolt holes, flipper button holes and larger cuts like the start button and shooter rod housing.

Can't remember where or when I bought them. I want to say I got them from Kerry (Mantis) because I found them in a bunch of Mantis parts.

TZ feels different to me than any other pin I’ve owned or played. An absolutely loaded widebody with too much going on to be floaty, it’s a really unique pinball experience. With a fair amount of stop/go, it’s not everyone’s favorite, but it’s a great change of pace game and every game feels different. There are so many different strategies, and it’s not linear at all. It’s like an amusement park for pinballs.

Quoted from jid:

I think I’m in the minority that loved/loves STTNG.

I love STTNG. I used to ignore it in the wild when I’d see them in arcades. It seemed like they were everywhere in the 90’s. But once I owned one, I realized what a fantastic layout it is. I had a really nice one last year and I added the cannon lasers, color DMD and several other upgrades. The modes kick ass and getting multiball never gets old. I love the video mode and collecting crystals. It’s one of the very best widebodies, imho!

I just added a home made mod on my TZ, I was planning to add a Clock Millions mod from the beginning that I bought my TZ but these Mods on Ebay are a little too pricy for me.
ebay.com link: itm
ebay.com link: itm
One is 160$ CAD with shipping and the other is more than 200$ CAD with shipping, plus, they are not made of solid brass like the ones that were sold about 15 years ago, they look cheap, I remember buying one of solid shiny brass for a TZ I had 15 years ago.
So I decided to make my own, I bought this solid brass pocket watch housing off Ebay for only 35$ CAD shipping included:
ebay.com link: itm
and a small solid brass bell off Marketplace I paid 5$ on which I cut the top part of the bell to get a miniature bell.
I printed this from Marco's and zoomed it really smaller (4 cm diameter) and added the missing numbers, 3 , 6, 9, and 12 with numbers I found on the net and printed.
https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/31-1751-3P
I cut a small round piece of policarbonate to make the clock glass, I polished everything before building it and added a LED behind the paper, connected to the clock millions lamp.
I'm quite happy with the results and it's shiny and nicer the the ones on Ebay.

Very nice, creative clock mod! I bought the first one you mentioned with the rotating minute hand. It’s expensive, I agree. I do like it a lot. The minute hand rotates and the face lights up when clock modes are active, or when you hit the clock target. It would be even better if made of brass! It’s made of some sort of metal. My issue is keeping it protected from ball strikes. I mounted a large, clear washer under it, and that seems to do the trick for now. A larger, rounded clear protector would be better!

Quoted from delt31:

Anyone else feel like the left side of this game isn’t really used too much? Pops you want to always stay out of due to cheap drains so you’re avoiding that shot. The upper pf is cool but you’re really just slamming away at the buttons and it’s not really a shot per say besides that hold left flipper up and shot in the hole which gets kicked out by slot machine. Finally, the gumball is super cool but again not a shot but something that takes up real estate. Am I missing something?

I’m lucky I don’t get many unfair drains out of the pops, maybe I have the left outlane especially tight. I like the shot through the pops into the scoop in the back corner, and I love shooting the camera shot. On my upper pf, there is some strategy i finally discovered. I only beat the power about 25% of the time, which I like. On my game, the only way to send the ball up toward the scoop to defeat the power is to let the ball come down to the bottom of the magnet zones, and then try to throw the ball up. You can find the sweet spot, but it’s not easy. Definitely not just mashing buttons, which would take the fun out of it. Probably wouldn’t do much on my example.

I do find some pins have unused real estate, but I haven’t felt that on my TZ, personally.

Quoted from awesome1:

I've had my TZ just a little under 5 years now. I like to think I defeat the Power about 50% of the time, but it's probably not actually near that high. I seem to go in streaks of winning and losing against it.
When I play my TZ I usually set a minimum goal of getting LITZ or 1 Billion (They often go hand in hand) before I move on to a different game. Sometimes only takes 1 game, sometimes several, though my current best is 3 LITZ in one game.

Like most pins, there seems to be a fair amount of variation in how difficult the Power is to defeat. On my first TZ, it seemed too easy. Mash the buttons and the magnets really tossed the ball around and more often than not, up the middle and out. On my new restored TZ, the magnets are less predictable. They grab the ball and pull it toward the bottom reliably, but you have to hit the button at just the right time to get upward motion. I like it, it’s a real challenge and not a gimme. Mashing the buttons won’t work well. Even with good timing, I’m around 25% success. I like it, especially during Powerball. That jackpot is big, and you really have to earn it!

Could someone skilled in metalwork produce the swirling wireform ramp? They are unobtainium now, and really add a nice “twist” to the left ramp. I would think the demand would support it.

100% agree. Found the same results from changing fliptronics board

Agree. I had flipper power issues on my White Water with the upper flipper that drove me nuts. Replaced coils, sleeves, etc., no change. My lower flipper on that side was ok, so I didn’t suspect the fliptronics board. Replaced it just to see, boom, perfect power. It’s great when you solve these mysteries and all is 100%…until the next one!

You inspired me. My TZ is restored, but has a translite. I can’t resist the mirrored glass upgrade.

Thanks,

If you haven’t checked out Comet Pinball’s led matrix system, you should! If you are interested in adding lights to your pin, under a scoop, extra lamps, etc., they are awesome. Very easy to use with 6.3v LEDs you can easily connect to GI sockets, the coin door, etc. They sell various lengths of wires too, and I recommend getting several of each length. They have tons of bulbs, including red and blue twinkling “fire” bulbs, which are a cool effect (I use them behind translites that depict fire or lightning, like the bbq in EATPM; lightning in TAF (looks amazing!) and torches in BSD), and color-changing LEDs which can be useful too. I use a color-changing led in my gumball plastic which lights up when the gumball machine is qualified, and then changes colors. Reasonable $$ too, considering many scoop led mods are $25-30. You can easily light your scoops for $10 with Comet. Just a suggestion!

My mirrored backglass arrived safely, despite shipping. Box was pretty chewed up and wet. But the packing by CPR is respectable for sure. The glass is thick, thicker than the stock glass and translite. So putting the plastic trim/channels on it wasn’t easy. But it looks great to me!

Thanks, I did exactly that with a couple pieces, including the important bottom channel trim piece. The sides are standard, but they are super tight. I bought a few sets of trim pieces recently to have backups on hand, so I mixed and matched until I had it framed in.

Quoted from jid:

is it awesome and worth it?

I am happy with the mirrored glass. The art on the glass is a reasonable approximation of the original art, perhaps a touch darker. Personally, I think the original is just fine. This TZ example I bought was fully restored before I got it, and then I spent a lot on the chrome. So this sorta completes the bling, if you will. I wouldn’t call it “must have.” But it’s a nice, classy looking alternative. Purely a personal preference.

Get your self a piece of Voo Doo glass for it. It will cut down on the reflection

Agree, Voodoo glass, or jump on JJP’s website and order a widebody Invisiglass. They cost a little more, but the edges are beveled and they are a bit easier to handle and less likely to cut into the plastic channel, which I’ve done with some of my Voodoo glass. That, and a bent plastic helps with reflection.

I ordered radcals for my cabinet as the art is faded. Does anyone have experience with these? I'm a bit confused and getting misinformation because the product says that you just slap it on but then I'm also reading you should paint the cab black first, albeit these posts are years old. Can I get a definitive answer from someone?

I’ve installed RadCals on 5-6 pins. It’s a different process than decals, and slightly more forgiving, but definitely not slap it on. You’ll want a smooth, flat cabinet to attach them to, so fill and sand any deep cuts or dents. I always sand any rough edges under the legs. Paint the cab black to prevent art from showing thru. I install the front RadCal first, then the sides so they form a nice corner where they meet. You’ll want a dremel for cutting holes for the start button, flipper buttons, and bolts. The head is the easiest part, so maybe start there. Don’t forget you’ll need to remove the hinge bolts on the sides of the cabinet before installing the side panels. I have a trick for this that saves having to remove the playfield or other more elaborate trick. I put the playfield back all the way in the service position. With the pf vertical, I lift the pf an inch or so, until it’s off the hinges. I use a 4 inch (or so) wood block to slide under the bottom and suspend the pf off the hinges just enough to remove the hinge bolts. Then you can remove them, leave the wood block under the pf, and you can easily remove the block and allow the pf to lock into the hinges again when you are ready and the bolts are back in.

If you have any questions about the process, pm me or others here who have done them.

Use elevator bolts when installing radcals..

Excellent idea. These could help avoid the dimple the bolts create. I also recess the holes with a dremel and minimize that, but these bolts could work great.

#13558 1 year ago
Quoted from ProjektPat:

Oh so this would make it so I don't have to Dremel holes for the bolts?

You’d have to countersink those, even tho they have a flat head. Or the Radcal won’t lay flat. I tend to agree that you could cover the bolts, and shouldn’t need to access them again. I tried to think of a reason you’d need to, but I can’t. I replace them on older WPC pins if they are tarnished, rusty or oxidized. But these you’ll never see again. It’s one option!

Quoted from ProjektPat:

Ok I got the radcals. Final poll, do I put it over the bolts or not. I see a lot of mixed answers

Personal choice. I will probably continue to drill holes in the Radcals for the bolts. But I can see why sinking the bolts so they are flush and then covering them would produce a smooth, clean look. Here are a few pics of mine with the bolts, if it helps you decide.

So bottom line wondering if I am setting myself up for a world of pain even if what I buy is well maintained.

I debated the exact same issue for my first game. I considered a restored TZ, or a nib pin. I was worried about upkeep, reliability. That was 2016. Now, looking back, I would get the game I want most, used or not. Condition is key, and check the boards and any issues with switches, mechs, etc. TZ is a loaded game, but I’ve had just as many (or few) issues with nib as with a good condition 90’s pin. Just my experience!

Who here has Pinsound on TZ? Is it a game changer? Considering it for TZ or IJPA.

#13890 11 months ago
Quoted from GILV:

I don't have Pinsound but I have it's equivilent, Tilt Audio, and I must say that it is a game changer, it rocks the game, it feels like a totally different game, the best mod I've added to TZ by far.

Thank you!

Quoted from awesome1:

Yes, I'm very happy with the Pinsound+ I put in my TZ!
I also modded the backbox speakers to both be 5 1/4" (rewired for true stereo) and am using aftermarket speakers in backbox and cabinet and external sub...
Note that the original sound package for TZ is not the greatest quality, especially the Rod Serling callouts. So just increasing the volume may not give you the desired effect you are looking for.
Depending on your level of commitment and ability/desire to tinker... Pinsound allows you to replace each sound file if you like. I tweaked a bunch of the files, added more bass, etc, to my personal liking. This can get tedious. There are also user-created options available from Pinsound and the original sound package designer, Chris Granner Stereo option, but if you use that directly, you lose the Golden Earing Twilight Zone song.
Overall Pinsound is an excellent option, you can just plug and play or go down the rabbit hole.

Thanks for all the info! I have Pinsound + in my BSD and LOTR. Really like the product. I would be bummed to lose the Golden Earring song. Are there any Pinsound packages that include it? If not, I’m prob not capable (yet) to design my own. Maybe the Tilt Audio option mentioned above.

About 10% of the time, when the diverter flips the ball onto the playfield off the Power wireform, the ball lands between this post and the side of the wireform. I can nudge the cabinet and it usually drops, but I would prefer the diverter always works. Do I need to add a magnet to the diverter?

What’s a twister mini pf switch kit?

#14128 10 months ago

This is a dumb question, but the mini playfield switches simply register hits that raise the value of the jackpot for defeating the power? Is that correct? So you want to keep the ball moving up there awhile before defeating the power to hit as many switches as you can? I guess I never gave it much thought, I’m always focused on trying to throw the ball upward to beat the power.

#14131 10 months ago
Quoted from Ive:

I always concentrate on a well timed pulse to beat the power. The points are nice but I value the extra door panel awarded more , plus points advanced for the next Battle .

Same here. My upper pf is quite tricky and the ball must be in the right place to throw it upward and defeat the power. I had a different TZ years ago and it seemed like mashing the buttons was all it took. I defeated the power yesterday, and did it during Powerball multiball for the 50m jackpot. I rarely get that. I scored just over 1 billion, but I took the extra ball.

If I want to connect this to a 12v source under the playfield, does anyone know how to do it? In the instructions it appears the red wire w the alligator clip goes on the 12v pole in the back box and the tiny black wire is a ground. But it’s not super clear. I could be wrong about the black wire.

How/when does the gumball machine get involved?

You qualify the gumball machine by shooting both ramps at least once. That lights the gumball sign and you can shoot the machine via the right orbit to advance powerball. During powerball, you shoot the right orbit again to start powerball jackpot multi ball mode, where you need to defeat the power to collect the jackpot. It’s a very tough jackpot (on my game anyway) but it’s a huge jackpot.

Yes, the front plastic is typically held by sticky tape that can be tricky to remove or replace. I took one off my Fish Tales to install a lit speaker panel. That panel can get foggy over the years. You should be able to replace it.

Quoted from Enron64:

will the code of this game hold my interest or will this game grow old fast?

When I bought my first pin in 2016 it came down to a new WOZ, because I never owned a pin and was worried about maintenance with older pins, and a restored TZ. I went with WOZ, owned it for 4 years and really enjoyed it. But TZ I’ve owned twice since, and my current one is never leaving. I’m biased, as my favorite era is the 90’s DMD era. I love TZ, Indy, Fish Tales, BSD, White Water, TOTAN. I think most agree of the WPC era pins, TZ is one of the most interesting and dynamic. Most owners know the story of Pat Lawlor being given a free hand on TZ after the historic success of The Addams Family. He’s talked about it many times, how much technology and mechs and money went into TZ. There is so much to do on TZ, and because you can stack different modes while working through completing the door, every game feels different. There are lots of ways to score well, aim for extra balls or multi ball, and try to get “lost in the zone.” If you are a fan of the TV series, all the better. If I could only have one pin from the 90s, TZ is probably the one.

Quoted from Miguel351:

My only gripe about the artwork is that some of the elements from the show are wrong, like the camera. In the episode "A Most Unusual Camera", it's just a box with a lens on the front of it and the picture comes out of the back of it. But on the game its a Rolleiflex camera, a well known model with two lenses that looks nothing like the one from the show. I guess maybe they had issues with licensing or something? I hope it wasn't an oversight. I'd like to know if there's a story behind why it's different. Could be just because people would recognize the Rolleiflex easily, and if they don't know the specific TZ episode, they might think it looks dumb? Who knows....[quoted image]

Maybe the Rolleiflex version is a more obvious representation of a classic camera? The simple one from the episode looks like a box with a round lens. I think the DMD video art looks more like the single lens camera from the episode. If my memory serves. I really like the mod. The brown, silver, blue and other colors look classy.

These toppers from The Electric Playground are off the charts. I hope they make batch 3 soon for those on the list! Just awesome in so many ways.

Damn, that TZ is beautiful! I'd love to get one of these toppers someday, hopefully they make more soon. How was the installation? Where does it plug into? Any install pics would be most welcome.

Thanks! This is my 2nd TZ, and I was really lucky to find a fully restored example at a good price. The topper comes with excellent instructions, both a PDF on their website and an installation video. They say install takes about 30-45 mins, which it might if you’ve done it before. It took me about an hour and a half, moving slowly. The topper has 2 brackets that hold it securely to the top, and uses 2 bundles of wires (and a power cord to the service outlet) to connect under the playfield at various points with t taps (like these - see pic). I had never used t taps, but they were pretty easy. The topper is interactive, with a clock, gumball machine and door connected to the game clock, gumball and certain inserts. So the door in the topper turns blue when multiball is qualified. The topper features an lcd with an eye that looks around.

I believe batch 3 is coming asap when parts arrive.

Installed my new loop ramp on TZ! I was able to use the slot machine with it. I really like the loop over the playfield! Awesome job making these!

That's how I have mine set up.

Mine too. My right orbit/gumball shot will go sdtm, and fast, if I don’t shoot the piano or at least hold the upper left flipper up. I’m used to it now, and I always raise that flipper up when shooting the camera shot with my upper right flipper. It seems far easier to make. So I’m always using that upper left flipper.

Just wanted to show off my latest High-end TZ Restoration

Nice job! Love to see full restorations of salvaged classic pins. Returning another high-end restored example to the pinball community improves our chances of finding one. Mine was restored similarly, with a new cabinet, etc., by Dan Goett of The Pinball Company. He did a first-rate job, mine was a steal and is bolted down!

I bought the CPR mirrored backglass a few months ago and overall I’m happy with it. Slightly darker than my original, artwork clarity is reasonable. It’s an option. It did convince me to replace my rough Space Shuttle translite with a mirrored glass because I’m restoring that pin. The SS CPR glass was really nice. The mirror areas were reflective, not merely silver paint, as some have experienced.

John Youssi’s art on TZ backglass…wow. So much to see. You can spend an hour just examining all the little references and hints he included on that translite. What an artist. I just read an article/interview with John. TZ is his favorite translite art he’s done, followed by TAF, MM and Jokerz. I do like his Jokerz translite a lot. I love all his art. Pinball is such a cool collaboration of artists, engineers and creators. Youssi is a huge part of pinball’s most iconic images.

It’s a chilly market with about 8 or 9 TZs currently listed and several for $8-9k. I hope you get solid value for yours. It’s tough to get the values pins were bringing in 2020-2022. If a TZ has especially clean cabinet and playfield, or has been restored, you might get more. Check the archives too for clues on what has sold and what hasn’t.

#14513 6 months ago
Quoted from GILV:

Someone here had said that he knew a TZ owner who had put only pinballs in his gumball machine topper and broke the glass, well, I think I found a smart way to do it (I hope so) I mixed real gumballs with pinballs, should be OK....... we'll see.
[quoted image]

The old adage is, “put pinballs in your topper and gumballs in your game, and if things go cattywompus you’ll have only you to blame.” Or, so they say.

all those mods and you don't have the best mod for those powerfield switches...

You are right! I’m still rocking those big metal arm micro switches on the upper pf. I should look into the upgrade!

Quoted from DeeGor:

MM has a lot of great humor. The castle toy is awesome and very satisfying when a castle gets destroyed. It has pretty good flow where TZ is a lot of stop and shoot. MM is also very approachable to non-pinball people.
Neither TZ nor MM have really deep rulesets, but both are fun. I'd put them on par with each other. I love both games, which is why I own both.

I agree. I have owned MM and TZ each twice, and they are currently both keepers for me. I do feel TZ offers more unique shots, all over the playfield with 4 flippers and 2 magnet flippers. Few pins from the 90s to now offer as many mechs and features as TZ. It really feels like each game on TZ is different than the last. MM is a classic fan layout with 2 flippers and great sound, callouts, humor and theme. It was ranked #1 for many years for a reason and deservedly so. The castle is a great toy. The gate and drawbridge are still awesome and blasting a ball through the wall never gets old. That said, I usually play one long game on MM then turn it off for a few days. It feels much more repetitive than TZ. You probably can’t lose with either pin, but if you are asking about staying power and repeat play, for me it’s TZ. Others no doubt will choose MM.

Greetings TZ Owners!! If any of you will be at Expo this weekend, please swing by the Electric Playground's booth (near the home brew section) to see the TZ topper in action and to say "hello"! We have a beauty TZ on display for free play and would love to give you a tour of the topper in-person! [quoted image] [quoted image]

Wish I could be there this year! I have one of your TZ toppers and they are just spectacular. A real achievement and a worthy topper for such a masterpiece as TZ. Enjoy Expo!

Well, just joined the club. Looks like I've got a lot of reading to do. Allegedly, this guy bought this from a distributor new in box, unloaded it for a vending/coin op convention for two weekends he was working at, and it's been in his basement ever since. I kind of believe it.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Looks like a nice original that should clean up very well. It’s a blank slate too! Not even any gumballs (marbles) in the gumball machine! This game has an exhausting amount of mods, but it’s fun if you enjoy doing it! Welcome to the club!

Awesome, thanks! Looks beautiful there. Same offer to you, Northern Michigan is incredible too. I’m up there frequently May-October. Then we are covered in snow and ice.

Traverse City is one of my favorite spots in Michigan. We used to go camping up there every summer. I grew up around 10 mile and Woodward a few blocks from the Detroit Zoo (not in the zoo ).
BTW, you have an amazing collection. I might have to hit you up next time I'm in The D for a Lions game. Go Lions!

Anytime! Post-Covid it feels like not enough pinball gatherings around here. Could be there are many and I’m not invited tho!
So if you do visit to support the Lions, GO LIONS!!! Do stop by! I added my current TZ last year and I love it. Pinsound is prob next! Traverse City and that entire northern Lake Michigan area is beautiful. We finally took our young son to Mackinac Island this August, and it was amazing. We stayed a couple extra days. We used to visit every fall.

Consider both of these, and a couple others at Super Skill Shot. Awesome shooters. And you’ll love the topper, it’s fantastic. Like 4 different interactive features. A HEP TZ! Man, I love his pins. He’s an artist. I bought my HEP Indy earlier this year and I just sit and stare at it. For hours.

mech at the end of the shooter lane.

I feel dumb, is there a mech at the end of the shooter lane? I thought there was simply a scoop, after you pass a metal gate and a series of switches. I’m confused I guess. I use the shooter spring that is softest, while still reaching the scoop easily. I want the skill shot to be controllable.

#14687 5 months ago
Quoted from Coyote:

I'm assuming he means the scoop.
And yeah, as I've mentioned, the wrong shooter spring can cause the welds to fail. Have seen it on a LOT of TZs that were out on location.

Ah, the metal scoop welds. I see. My plunger at full pull hits the scoop pretty gently. Lots of room to use a soft touch for that extra ball or 10 mil bonus.

Lots of great collectors here. Just post a few pics if you find a really promising one, and we can help spot anything suspicious. The good news is, they made a HUGE number of these games, and lots of really nice examples are out there. Don’t overlook well done restorations either. I’m on my second TZ, and I jumped on this one because it was a complete restoration with a new cabinet and playfield, and I knew who the restorer was. Bought in 2022 for $12.5, it’s been a great game. And values have come down on many pins this year. Lots of TZs in good condition for under $10k. I have been looking for a restored cftbl for about 2 years, and finally found one in beautiful condition. Pickup next week. Keep looking and you’ll land an awesome, well cared for TZ!

I'm looking at adding a mod to my TZ but I need a 12 volt source.
Can someone guide me to where I can find a 12V source on a connector from the backbox boards please?
Thanks.
I'll post pictures of my mod once installed for those who are curious.

Most original boards have a 12v and 5v post at TP1 on the power driver board you can clip an alligator clip to. Like this…
Or, Pinball Life sells a 12v power tap board for WPC games for $10.

Are these different kinds of switches, in this upper playfield kit? I assume they aren’t a form of opto, but a more sensitive switch? I couldn’t find a description.

Quoted from atg1469:

Any idea who’s selling the cheapest replacement?!

They all seem to be $30-40. But keep in mind the product quality and appearance vary. I bought 3-4 different ones as an experiment (and to have extras on hand) and some have a slight marbling effect and others are solid white. I took some pics of them I’m trying to find. But I know Hooked on Pinball has very white, glossy ceramic balls. I liked those best of all. If you want slight marbling, try one of the others.

Nice! I used a blue acrylic and love the effect it provides as well!

That blue looks fantastic under there. Really pops and lights up that dark area. I’ll replace mine someday when I’m under the upper pf. I did recently add 2 led lamps above the upper pf to light the Battle the Power area up.
