Not sure where the best place would be to place it. And, since the bracket is large enough, I might go ahead and add the dime in the foreground. I'll have it installed *somewhere* tonight.

I've seen them installed up near the front right side somewhere

You can solder a paper clip to the back of a quarter and use it to secure it to a screw on one of the plastics.

#1654 3 years ago

I'm leaning towards a coin graveyard scene with at least 6 coins. . But I need to re-think the dates; that episode aired in 1961 so the coins should be that or older. I was using a 1964 quarter, now I need to find an older one. All the other coins I have are 1947 or so.

Just trying to be authentic...

OK I got the mod itch, so here's my first TZ mod. I'm using the coin-on-the-edge scene from A Penny For Your Thoughts. I have four coins that are applicable, so I hot-glued them to a metal plate. Here is the result:
first-model_(resized).jpg
I might add a Roosevelt dime to the bottom edge.
Comments, suggestions?

This is quite easy to do, whether "stacking" the coins or an individual quarter on edge.
Do not solder as the bond is not strong enough to withstand a strike from an air ball.
Use professional loctite super glue which dries fast, clear, and can be controlled.
Stack the coins as desired, glueing one at a time.
Mounted the coins on a small L brace bracket from Home Depot (1" inch size) using the quarter as the backing for the stack.
A stack of coins is actually better because it protects the quarter with the mount.
Install on playfield using an existing metal post that uses a locknut with the mount facing away from the player so you do not see it.

Done.
Illusion complete.
A good location is above the rocket kicker and to the right of the slot machine.

#1656 3 years ago

BlackKnight, you nailed it, I'm taking your advice verbatim. Great suggestions, thanks!

Stacked as close as I can get to the original layout, I used some commercial hot glue to bond the coins to a plated steel strip, and mounted it above the plastic cover. The coins are all dated 1941-1945 so they're authentic. Here's the assembly, ready to mount:
img2_(resized).jpg

Positioned on the game as recommended. It mounted very securely using the locknut:

Screen shot of the coin tray from the 1961 segment:
coin-on-edge-penny_for_your_thoughts_season_2_1961_(resized).jpg

Digging thru a bunch of old coins, I can replicate that coin tray...what a cool prop that would be! Hmmm...

#1657 3 years ago

I like it a lot. One of my favorite episodes.

#1658 3 years ago

How hard was it to find the correct dates? Unless you work in a bank like Dick York

#1659 3 years ago

I'm not sure what the correct dates are, but since the segment was aired in 1961, I can assume the dates on those coins were pre-61, and looking at the wear on the Liberty half dollars, probably 1940's thru 1950's. I have a National brass cash register in my game room that I restored and polish/clearcoated, then for years I have filled it with vintage money from the old days. All of the coins are old dates, even the bills. So I had plenty of coins to choose from. Here's the monster, and you can ring up as much as $7.99!
national-cash-register_(resized).jpg

Those old silver coins are fairly cheap online, depending on the condition. For a prop, an old worn out coin would work just as well.

All, there seem to be a lot more possible combo shots than I'm capable of hitting on my machine. If I hit a ball through the right loop and hold up the upper left flipper, should the ball pass through the "hidden hallway" behind the slot machine? I've never had a single ball do this. If yours does this, could you post a video of this happening, and well as a photo of where your upper left flipper sits in the rest position? I can hit the piano all day, but this flipper definitely does not pass the ball through the hallway. It instead typically hits a greed target.

If there is a hidden shot behind the slot scoop I've never hit it.

That's the "clock passage". And it really depends on how fast ball comes around the spiel spiral. I can do it *occasionally* on my game.

That's also how you get the 4-way combo - left rank, right ramp to diverter, thru clock passage, to camera.

Was packing up my parts, cleaning up after almost finishing the restore, and saw this.. Notice the missing artwork?

I purchased a plastic set shortly after the game was released, and this shows that the plastic shape was changed to remove the upper right magnet, but the art hadn't been touched up yet.

The plastic from my 6/93 TZ has the same white area printed on the left side as that one. Two differences I see are that the blue used on mine is much darker (mine looks dark blue, yours looks sky blue), and mine has no part number printed at the bottom.

I assume mine is original, since it is warped and filthy. I got my busted/filthy TZ in a 2-fer deal last summer, so it has been sitting, waiting for the cold weather to start shopping. I spent last night cleaning metal ball guides, and the night before that on subways. I will be putting up high scores in a few more weeks/months.

Here is an update on my shooter lane clean up. Here are the before and after shots. Clear coat is still curing but I think it looks a lot better. Let me know your thoughts.

I meant the clock... The passage between the piano and the clock. Curious if the left upper flipper was supposed to pass a strong spiral orbit shot through it naturally.

Is there a shot map in th manual?

The one in my game dosen't have the little cutout visible - because it's actually cut out for the opto. Interesting on the color change, though.. I didn't compare this with the one in my game - maybe I should.

Cleaned up the inside of the cab today, probably the first to do so in 20+ years. This towel took quite the dirt/grime beating!

What cleaner did you use for the inside of the cabinet?

#1673 3 years ago

I sprayed this natural cleaner into a terry towel and buffed out the dirt gently

I was thinking more of a koala had run into it at speed and left an imprint, sort of like the road runner coyote running into a wall

Color DMD pre-vid:

PS: Loved, but I just think that the DOOR should be ALL WHITE!

#1677 3 years ago

I got my Color DMD for my TZ last night. I can't wait to get it installed...

#1678 3 years ago

I leave this thread for a week and you guys are gluing coins above your flippers. You're out of control, reel the mods in.

#1679 3 years ago

Hah, yeah, but can you think of a better way to display old silver coins?

It looks like a shooter lane that has been clear coated. It doesn't look better, or worse to me.

Seems like it would show things down a bit. Info here:

Yeah.... that's exactly what I thought.... to quote the last post on that particular thread: "I like the looks, but this will obviously cause an uneeded delay in the ball return."

Hey guys- Im looking for the 4 gray TZ mini playfield covers. If you recently upgraded to the great lakes kit without these big switches, these should be leftover in your coin box. Even 2 would help- I have a lead on another two. I dont want to buy an untrimmed aftermarket set. Thanks in advance if you can help!!

OK, now I see it. There is a passage behind the slot scoop, but there is not a switch, so it doesn't register when you roll behind the slot.

There is just one thing that I definitely didn't like: the door colors.... I'd rather have an all-white door....

#1694 3 years ago
Quoted from AlexSMendes:

The four door panels were shaded in the original ROM, so a color had to be chosen. Personally I'd have gone with dark orange, given that's the color of the panel inserts, but the blue lightning strike on the white door with orange panels may not have looked right (Randy would have to comment, Ill ask him at TPF). As is, the game is far more eerie and sinister feeling in color than it was in black and white.

Side note, I just novus 2'd my decals. Amazing how even a super clean game's original decals just caked on the dirt over the years.

Hey guys,
I have a weird "carriage" problem. Is it called the carriage? Che thing that catches the ball on the rail or lets it go to the powerfield. It sometimes won't carry the ball up and out to the main playfield. It makes a whine sound but won't dump the ball over. It's intermittent. Sometimes it works ok. It never seems to fail when battle the power is lit, though. Anything make sense here? Just a weak solenoid that needs more power?

#1697 3 years ago
Quoted from paynemic:

weird "carriage" problem

How does it feel mechanically? With the power off, hold the rod that pulls it down. You should be able to push it down against the spring with medium resistance, and the spring should pop it back up freely. Maybe the coil sleeve is binding up, or the pin that the carriage pivots on is binding up. Maybe the coil bracket under the playfield came loose, and it is misaligned.

If not a mechanical issue, maybe one of the coil wires are not soldered on securely. You can test the coil electronically in the menu 'T-test' -> '#4 solenoid test' -> '#5 R.Ramp Diverter' - select repeat, and it should activate over and over.

#1698 3 years ago

It felt fine when flipping it manually from under the pf. I replaced the coil sleeve. Got a couple games on it and it seemed better. Still makes a pretty loud groaning sound. Does that sound familiar? It looks like a standard solenoid (smaller than a flipper) so I'm not sure what the noise is. Maybe a new solenoid is necessary?

#1699 3 years ago

I do not want a ton of mods on my TZ. The color DMD should be here Mon. I have the Coin Taker LED non ghosting premium kit, a Ingo clock board & the Great Lakes mini playfield switch kit ready to install after I get the dust vacuumed out.

The only other mod's I'm thinking of getting is the piano. Where is a good place to buy 1 from? Thanks
