Greeting TZ owners! I have acquired a TZ with many mods. One is what appears to be an amp placed in the cabinet that feeds the cabinet speaker. The factory wiring has been by-passed and thicker wires were added. The connector that runs from the amp to the sound board was disconnected. Can anyone tell me which connector (J???) on the sound board would normally feed the cabinet speaker? I know I can look it up, but I thought someone may know off hand which it is.

Also, this machine has the third magnet. How does this effect gameplay?

Speakers are wires in series - J505 and J504.

3rd magnet is used to capture the third spiral shot when in Spiral mode, and if the setting's enabled, the 'catch and release' start to Multiball under certain circumstances.

Thank you Coyote. Much appreciated!

The mods are insane on this machine. So far I've identified the following (and missed a few I'm sure):
1. Lighted gumball machine with realistic gumballs
2. Lighted robot
3. Lighted slot machine with spinning reels
4. Mirror blades
5. 9.4H ROM
6. Lighted camera
7. Lighted Red '55 T-Bird
8. Starfield mini pf light decals
9. Full Comet LED conversion
10. Extra controllable color-changing LED's installed on backboard behind Rod Serling (Makes it look pretty neat, as if he's walking out of a cloud of changing colors)
11. Quality aftermarket speakers in backbox and cabinet with some sort of filter on the cabinet speaker

I have Pinsound cards in several of my other pins (Took T2 to another level), but I was not too impressed with what I've heard on the TZ Pinsound files, so I'll likely leave it alone.

Any other popular mods out there these days? I understand you can't get some of them anymore, like the working slot machine.

I would recommend: Color DMD (I prefer the LED version on TZ), LED OCD board and GI OCD board.

The LED version shoes the dots? I like the solid colors which are LCD? Ive installed a few is it easy to update the firmware that is needed per their website?

Yeah if you prefer the solid colors, you will want the LCD style. The LCD style does support a few different display styles that you can switch between for your preference. I like the LED style since it looks more like the DMD did originally and has better brightness and contrast, but either style is a great upgrade!

FIrmware upgrade to specific game is easy and they have good instructions.

#13757 1 year ago

The LCD smooths the dots. The LED shows the dots. The LCD is super smooth. For one of my games that I’d previously owned in LCD I thought I’d try LED…. Hated it. Think of LED as just the dots having color. LCD goes a step further and makes the dots become solid animations.

Some people LOVE the classic dot look of the DMD. But for ~$500 I’d rather have the upgraded LCD look.

These are LED examples:

That's exactly why I like LCD . Seems more like coor on new pis and not just color dots.....Thx for the replies

Well, the lcd offers a variety of display options with some being the smooth variety. There are also display options for dots which I prefer. The led display has no options. That's why I like the lcd. You get more options and just more pleasing to my eyes.

Looking for motivated seller in MD/DE/PA/VA ALot of TZ for sale. Have cash for right deal. Looking for very nice, lots of mods, under 10k. Still recovering from selling last last few loaded for around 5k

The game resetting could be a lot of things. I'd recommend starting here:
https://pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Williams_WPC#Game_resets
Too bad you're not closer. I need a deep project game to work on. TZ is a beast to shop - it took me almost 24 hours.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/price-to-shop-a-tz
If you were closer I'd take it on. Fix all of the bugs and bullet proof it while I was in there. It's a labor of love, but once it's done, my experience has been the games run trouble free for a long time. That seems to hold true for most platforms - WPC, System 7, Whitestar, etc.
"Shopping" them isn't cheap though. Rebuilding all of the mechs, caps and select headers on the boards, etc....

What do you do exactly to bullet proof the game?
I'd like to do mine but don't know what it implicates.
Thanks.

Me too, honestly. I'm dots all the way. the 'Filled in' art just looks wrong at times.

#13765 1 year ago

Hybrid here. I have color LED in my TZ and STTNG and AC/DC, color LCD with filled in look in my TWD.

Love the dots look in older games, and LED has so much more pop than LCD for the dots

For more modernish games like TWD, the filled lcd look is a nice transition to modern pins look for me

Pros and cons of running a seven balls with 9.4 code…Thanks.

Adding a ball with 9.4 code. Good idea or no.

#13774 1 year ago

I didn’t even know you could do that. Guess I’ll have to try it out.

#13775 1 year ago

I have been running the 7th ball in mine for a while now and honestly I don't have a preference. My score maybe went up a little but not anything special. I am going to put it back to 6 here pretty soon to see any difference.

Entirely up to you. The game and software can handle it fine. Can you?

Quoted from Gorgar666:

Pro: 7 ball wizard mode.

Con: takes more shots to the gumball machine to start powerball mania.

Opinion: I run 7 balls because loading the gumball machine isn’t hard, but also getting the powerball out of the gumball machine feels like more of a “treat.”

There’s really no wrong answer here.

#13778 1 year ago

Adding a 7th ball gets a little interesting if the ball added is a second power ball in the game.

Does only 9.4 do the 7 balls or does 9.2 do it as well?
2nd powerball could be fun, I have one kicking around somewhere although it's not as bright white as the one in the game.

#13781 1 year ago

Ok next question. Beside dropping a 7th ball in. What do I adjust in settings for this.

You can use a second powerball, but it will cause some issues. (Specifically, powerball mania, when you locked one powerball, and the other is now out, and the multiball magnet grab.)

9.2 did not have the setting, but you could put an extra in, it would be fine.

In 9.4H, adjust A.2 35 Balls In Gumball setting.

Joined the club today. Dude had this machine since 1995! Build date June 1993. Cabinet is a solid 9/10. Planning to give it a good cleaning and replace the coil sleeves/rebuild flippers and add new Titans.

Judging only by your single pic, that looks a well preserved / cared for machine that perhaps saw little play. Anyway, congrats on the find. My TZ is pretty good for its age but the one you have appears on another level... If you get a chance post some more pics.

Hello! I Recently acquired a TZ. I've been wanting one for a long time and am super stoked. Not quite as nice as JerryM's above but it's in good shape, except...
Im getting an eos error in the test report for all 4 flippers. Eos switches do not register in switch edge test. I can't see any obvious broken wires or solder joints on any of the switches. Wondering where to go next. Is there a common wire among all 4 that I can run a continuity test on, or....? Flippers work fine, btw but im worried about frying a coil if I trap up or something.
Appreciate any help you all can give and I'm glad to finally be in the club.

I believe all the EOS switches terminate at the fliptronics board...have you looked at those connections? orange wires as I recall on a .100 header

I have not. I'll check that board next. Thank you

No - check the dedicated switch columns by your switch matrix in the manual. One on the left one on the right.

You won't. Fliptronics knows about it and cuts power.

Quoted from Hop721:

Like LTG said, the whole purpose of the fliptronics board is to prevent this. EOS switches are more or less redundant in this case. You can play the game just fine and trap balls all day long.

#13792 1 year ago

Just for fun…. When was the last time you ever heard of a NIB TZ discovered or put in the market? And What price do you think one would bring today (assuming no hidden issues).

#13793 1 year ago

Thanks, everyone-Problem solved (mostly). I had done a cursory look over all connections after moving machine but had missed that the J906 connector on the fliptronics board was not fully seated. Switches are now registering in test but, oddly, I am still getting the error codes on start up for all eos switches. I'm confident they are working so not sure what's going on there.

#13794 1 year ago
Quoted from Hop721:

I'm confident they are working

I'm confident they aren't.

Broken wire at one of them or from one of them to the fliptronics board.

I'd check continuity of wires from them to the board. If all of them are good to the board, then their IC on the board has an issue.

In Tests - Switch Edge - if each one ( or any one ) works and the correct one registers on the screen, that should clear the error.

Appreciate some thoughts

Debating buying a TZ table (big fan) but new to owning pinball and only have a new stern. My worry is that the repairs will be beyond me very quickly, but I am willing to learning (technology background but not mechanical/electrical).

So bottom line wondering if I am setting myself up for a world of pain even if what I buy is well maintained.

#13800 1 year ago
Quoted from Dalinar:

only have a new stern.

You okay with that for basics. Cleaning ? Minor repairs ?

If so TZ will be no problem. People may disagree but I've found mine reliable in commercial use, and one of the easier pins to shop. Mini playfield - two identical connectors, don't mix them up so you don't blow up your optos. Habitrails come out easy, a connector or two, nuts and screws. Ramps - a couple small screws, and bigger screws, and connectors.

Not much else there.
