Yeah if you just plugged it in, you still need to transfer TZ Roms. Without those, the CPU has no idea what game it is for

Quoted from OptoBoy:That's heartening. I'll give it a go on the ASIC. Already switched the U4 and U6, so if there's nothing else I'll use the ASIC from the old board and see how that goes...
More to follow, thanks to all of you for your patience here.
You need a special tool for the ASIC. Pins on all sides. It is not as easy to remove as the regular ROMs
Quoted from OptoBoy:Opto board replaced successfully. Had a couple 'check switch messages' - 26, 62 & 63. Performed factory reset and all error messages vanished. Game plays beautifully again. A Christmas miracle.
One caveat -- after second game, restarted machine and good old switch 26, trough proximity error came back. This error had been showing up since the early days of me having the game, and persisted for 6 months of hard play without affecting game play. All functions seem normal, but I've got a little concern about that switch 26, since it's on the blue-white line... wondering if it might contribute to another opto board failure if not remedied.
The good news is the OP is getting familiar enough with the inner workings to be thinking about upgrading to a color display.
Thanks Pinside!
Trough proximity switch does effect play if not working. It’s job is to detect metal balls so in a situation where a power ball is ejected from the trough, if 26 is not working properly, it will not detect the power ball and that mode won’t be triggered. It’s easy to get to, it’s the sensor with a red led near the front of the ball trough it’s got a small 2 pin connector for it
