I play a Pro version at University Pinball in Philadelphia. When I first started playing this game I hated it. As I learn more of the rules and strategies for high scoring, the less I dislike it. I don't think it is ever going to be a game I "love", but with such few options of functioning games in Philadelphia I have to suck it up and try to enjoy what games I can find on location.
Sure, the center drain from pops is an issue, but the tilt on the machine I play usually allows for big moves with one warning.
I've found I originally really hated this game because is requires much more "defensive" play than I was used to, compared to a flowing game like Start Trek. Ball control, nudging and moving the machine is vital to stay alive. It is making me a batter player.
Luckily the machine I play has a low replay score (26 Million) so I can normally get 1-2 free games per $2.00 (for 3 plays). I've found myself having much longer ball times on TWD than I did on Star Trek Pro. In fact I sually get 30 minutes + for $2.00.
Overall I share the same frustration, but let it make you a better player.
