The AT-LP120 is widely accepted as a great midrange turntable. Amazon has it for $250. I removed the preamp and upgraded the cartridge on mine. $250 is just the price of entry, there is room for growing. Mine is plugged into a phono preamp (Hagerman Bugle), then into my home theater system. As a standalone system there are probably much better options. I have a pair of KRK Rokit powered studio monitors that I think sound great at around $300 for the pair. These are reference monitors, meaning they don't add any bass or other equalization to make it sound better for the masses. I bought them for my home studio but they are used for youtube and streaming music more lately. I listen to music all day on them and they are fantastic. I'm well under your budget. You could upgrade to a better cartridge or a larger speaker. You could also upgrade the preamp. The Hagerman Bugle was a kit that was a fun simple build. Good luck!
