Innovating stuff no one asked for?

Heighway was right into that too.

#518 6 months ago

They started when the market was starved for machines and a lot of money was flying around. The market now looks very different.

They also didn’t learn from failures of deeproot or Heighway and innovated things no one cares about or cares to pay for.

BoF got it right (although I’m a bit surprised there isn’t more pushback on their pricing).

You know those ads akin to "This company of 20 somethings is disrupting the <<insert established business here>> industry" ?

That's what this feels like (and we've seen this story before). People from outside think they can improve on the Stern "dinosaur" and leap-frog it.

#667 6 months ago

70% of NIB Stern games are sold to home buyers. For a new company it's going to be a lot closer to 100%.

If there is innovation -- on top of great art, sound, design -- I want it in mechs and tech that improve the playing experience.

I don't want to pay $1500 more for something I'll possibly -- marginally -- benefit from once in a blue moon when I need to do maintenance on the game.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Hand painted sculpts? Already identified as cheap, off the shelf china crap from some low budget Ebay knock off site.
The guys bullshit just gets worse by the minute.
And further more if I wanted static sculpts that DO NOTHING I would have never sold X-files. lol.

He never said *they* hand-painted them!

For every IP that we’re nostalgic for and resonates with us there were a hundred failures no one remembers or cares about. The odds that a homegrown IP is a winner are very low. Humour is hard, just look at Pinball Adventures. Get a license and give yourself a fighting chance.
