    Quoted from fossmin:

If you use walnut media in your tumbler, what grit do you use?
    Thanks
    Gerry

    Just don't buy fine.

    Quoted from jj44114:

Kaytee Walnut Bird Litter from Petco

What I like about the Kaytee stuff is, it's dustless and very clean. I bought some stuff off Amazon real cheap a number of years ago and ended up throwing most of it away. It was too fine, which caused it to easily clump up with the additive and it was also very dusty. It really made a mess of the shop.

    Quoted from FatPanda:

No rust. I'm just thinking for future games where I can use the tumbler to clean the mechs instead of the ultra-sonic. .

While a tumbler will clean and polish, I'd highly recommend cleaning your parts before tumbling or the media gets dirty quickly. They don't have to go in an ultrasonic. Just spray with Purple Power, brush well and rinse.

    Quoted from timab2000:

And no your drop targets assy even disassembled will not fit in a 5lber.

Agreed. They won't even be close. If you've got larger pieces you need tumbled, I'd be more than happy to do them for you. Just pay postage both ways.

Larger tumblers just don't pay for themselves if you only need them once or twice a year. I can tumble most anything.

    Quoted from Ballypin:

I did the exact same thing to my 5lb FH tumbler. Now I am considering moving up to the 18lb model.

It's nice having both sizes. It's a lot easier picking a bunch of fasteners out of the 5lb tumbler then the 18. I only us the 18 for larger parts.

    Quoted from ktownhero:

I use Flitz polish, works great. I just put a few squirts in at the beginning of any cycle, whether walnut or corn cob.

    https://www.amazon.com/Flitz-TA-04806-Tumbler-Additive/dp/B008PCU6F4/ref=asc_df_B008PCU6F4/

I use the same, although some claim to have good results with Novus 2 and all kinds of liquid polishes.

But you do definitely need an additive.

    Quoted from ktownhero:

I actually use the regular Flitz polish, not the stuff designated as being for tumblers. It's a lot less expensive.
I'm sure any type of polish works great in there. Not surprised to hear Novus 2 works well.

Yeah, that Amazon link is spendy. I bought a gallon of the stuff a couple years ago for about $100. No idea where I got it from. I still have about 1/4 of it left.

    Quoted from Winger03:

Will Novus 2 work with metal pieces (lane guides, screws etc.) in a tumbler with walnut?

Not sure how well it works but I've heard of people using it.

    Quoted from solarvalue:

Does anyone find that the walnut shells get ground down into dust after a while? Maybe I just got the wrong walnut shells.

I once bought some cheap crap online and it was really bad. Fell apart fairly soon after using and was really dusty.

I use nothing but the stuff from the pet store. Stays intact and never had a dust problem.

    Quoted from solarvalue:

Here's a pic of the stuff I'm using. You can see that some of it is quite coarse (which is how it started out) but a lot of it has turned to dust. It seems to work OK but doesn't last.

That doesn't look good at all. Here's what I have used for years. No matter how many batches I go through, it does not break down.

    Quoted from krankin:

I'm trying to dial in the right amount of time to have items in the tumbler. I ran for about 10 hours (walnut + regular flitz) and the polished items like the pop ring came out shiny, but other items, like brackets and whatnot weren't as shiny as I had expected. I'm assuming either
    A. I didn't run it long enough
    B. My expectations on how polished brackets can get is too high
    C. all of the above.
What do you think the minimum amount of time in the tumbler is before you started to reach maximum benefit?

Mostly B with a little bit of A. I let most everything run at least a 24 hours. Smaller thing like nuts, bolts, etc. need less time than that.

Keep in mind, you won't get a chrome like finish, like you have on the pop rings, unless that was the original finish.

I've left some larger brackets for 3 or 4 days. It all depends on how well they tumble. Some stuff moves easily while some not so well.

For reference, here’s the media in my 3 tumblers. I’ve run probably 10 batches in each of these.
