I just made this topper. I bought a bunch of used "World of Springfield" figures from eBay (cheap!) I put a few of the figures on the playfield, but the rest I wanted to use somehow. I decided to make a custom topper. I bought 32 oz of liquid resin, made a form the size of the top of the head, poured it and let it set. The resin is about 1/4" high, just enough to hold the figures in by their feet.

I like it...

If it was just a few, I wouldn't like it....but as a big menagerie like that...yes!

I like it too. I also have a slew of those figures. Could you take a picture of the game from further back please? Thanks!

Pretty cool

Looks cool but I would have put them on a seperate piece of black painted wood so it was removeable.

?? sounds like it was resin formed to be the same size as the head. You could just pick it up to remove.

Yep that is true. And here is a pic from farther away and above.

So tell me more about this resin? Is that something I buy at Lowes? This looks like a nice and rewarding project.

This is the resin I bought, though Amazon:

Looks sweet. I wonder how it would look if you set some sort of riser under the rear to give it a bit of an angle.

Very cool and thanks for posting the link for where to get that stuff.

I'm happy to help!

FYI, the "catalyst" that is included is a small bottle that you add to the resin drop by drop. The number of drops you add varies with the number of ounces of resin you use and the resulting thickness (add too many drops and the resin may become too brittle, according to the instructions). Since I didn't have any idea how thick it would end up being, I used all of the catalyst and all of the resin. I mixed it up in a large bowl for a minute (according to instructions) and poured it into my form which already had the figures standing and arranged the way I wanted them. It dried mostly in a few hours, and shrunk a bit. I took it out of my form after 6 hours or so - just because I was excited to see it. It dries VERY clear.

It does smell VERY strong (and there are warnings for that), so do not do this inside your house. Use it in a well ventilated area.

That looks amazing!!

Have you thought about throwing some led strips under it? Nothing permanent just as a trial to see how cool it would look lit up?

Thanks!

Yeah I originally thought about putting some LED strips in the base and pouring the resin around it. But I thought I better not, that might be too brittle where the lights are, and I can always add them later.

I put a test strip in to see (your request), here it is:

That strip is mostly at the front, I think it would look good to add an additional strip or two further back.

Here are the figures I added to my playfield. I tried to put the figures where they made sense, according to the shots or the plastics near the figures.

Oh and here is the "Moe's Tavern" playset mod, that was a good idea someone had (sorry, I don't know who or I would give them credit):

That's an awesome topper. Looks very expensive to make though if you haven't collected them growing up.

#19 9 years ago

Total cost was about $100, including resin. I bought the figures from eBay used, average of $2 per figure.

(Sorry for the thread necro, but I figured someone else eventually might be interested.)

What did you form the mold out of that you sat the figures in and poured the resin into?

I'd be interested in knowing also.
