The couch is what it is. Mine had a small crack in it when purchased so I replaced it. If the couch were any thicker you would have more issues of it snagging on the sides. Not to mention, by design, it works well. The ball never comes in contact with the plastic. So if one is careful, then there shouldn't be any issues.
