Hey, guys! Quick question, what's the deal here? (Video below)

The display just blinks the start up jargon (display version A5.00 etc...) when the game is turned on and it never leaves that screen. I can get into the Portals menu, and a full game can be played.

I have a Tommy and was curious if I could bring the display and display board over (The whole kit and caboodle) and put into The Simpsons, but I have limited knowledge of the Whitestar stuff. I understand if they were compatible you'd have to swap the roms and be careful of orientation, but both boards look fairly similar.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

you would have to change chip roms on the display power board for the correct game.

#3 6 years ago

also not sure if tommy uses the same size display.

So, the display power boards are compatible between games? The displays are the same size. I'm just not trying to blow anything up hahaha

ok displays are the same, but the dot matrix controllers boards are different, won't work.
You would need one out of a Sega whitestar game.
I have a starship troopers which used basically the same boards.

Rad, thanks. Any clue whats causing this? I'm at a loss.

Have you tried to reseat the game and display ROMs to see if that corrects the issue? One of them could be bad. Have you done any recent work on the game or did it start suddenly?

Haven't done any work. On it. The big ribbon cable was used to troubleshoot a display issue on Tommy (found out the ribbon cable wasn't the issue on Tommy) Upon putting the ribbon back in TSPP the issue showed up. It was the only thing I unplugged from the board.

I know the Display rom has been reseated and that hasn't changed anything. I haven't tried the game roms yet.

might try getting a new ribbon cable, I just did the side art on my TSPP and after putting back together had problems
with my display, missing data and column lines in the display, new cable fixed.

you did put the red line to the #1's on both boards?

#11 6 years ago

Yeah, red is on 1. The DMD on Tommy still works it just looks like it has a visible refresh rate. We have tried that cable in TSPP and have gotten the exact same result. So I'm not convinced it's the cable to be honest.
