I knew Richard Corben from his contributions to the Warren comics Creepy and Eerie. I gravitated toward those as a kid because they did not conform to the comics code and were a bit more risqué. I did not realize that he had done the iconic Meatloaf Bat Out of Hell cover. That’s an album I’ve appreciated, but never owned.
I have previously been a professional graphic designer, art director, and illustrator. The advice I offer is the same as was offered to me by my high school Vo-Tech mentor, a Pratt grad and Madison Avenue veteran. Start with lots of thumbnail sketches of every idea you have, then do a few 1/4 size roughs of the best. Now, do two or three half size roughs of the best candidates. Finally, proceed with a full sized rough, and then execute!
Design is a process and can be learned. Art is a passion.
