I am trying to help a friend take care of a display problem on his LOTR. A color DMD was installed 1.5 years ago and the other day it went dead, we did some troubleshooting and confirmed that it is the 520-5055-00 controller board. Are there some tests I can perform on this board to try to repair it here? Is there someone who this can be mailed to for repair if I cant do it? Or does he have to bite the bullet and buy a replacement?
We confirmed that the rottendog replacement board (half the cost of the sega/stern board) will not work with color DMD.

The Rottendog board will work with the ColorDMD.

The Rottendog board is actually a DE/Sega replacement. The early LOTR ROM would not have worked with a DE/Sega board, but support was added in later versions to operate with both Stern and DE/Sega boards.

Quoted from Dmod:

DE/Sega controller boards have a minor difference in data signalling compared to later Stern boards. Rottendog's signal timing matches the earlier DE/Sega boards while the color ROMs for Stern Whitestar games expect the Stern timing.
The difference is not normally visible, but alters the tags computed by the ColorDMD such that they deviate from expected values. As a result frames are not recognized, and are displayed with the default color.
The same problem results if you use an original DE/Sega DMD controller in a Stern Whitestar game.
There is no compatibility problem when the Rottendog board is used in a DE/Sega game.

Here is the tread from a year ago that I was talking about. I guess my ColorDMD is newer (installed about 18 months ago) so it will work. Anyway to check the ROM version on the ColorDMD to be sure?

Got a PM from Randy at ColorDMD and it will work with all now. Thanks!
