Another one of my artistic dementia projects kicking in. I have wanted to do Tron wireforms for a long time. I have owned Tron twice, but it was before I started the wireform business with my wife. So, this Tron number 3 is now another project I have been very eager to do. I really think the game will look amazing without the plastic ramps. I also believe the el or fiber lights would look fine on the rails. I will make plastic ramp entrances for the wireforms. The stock ones will not be touched only removed. If you dig the project and find yourself interested please feel free to pm me. I will sell them as a kit soon. I just had to sort out some severe wiring hacks prior. Stay tuned, I will post as it goes.

That game looks jacked up for sure, I’m sure you’ll make a nice example out of it

#3 1 year ago

And the madness begins. Wiring corrected. Playfield under ramps needed to be cleaned anyway, but look at it visually without the plastics.

Left side in progress. I need to tie in more rails due to length.

These will be the longest forms I have made to date. I use six feet sections so I had to extend these as I make the drop hole centered in wireform length when shaping them out. I spent my day on paying work, but grabbed a hour on tron. The forms will really free up space in the back. I think I am going to remove the recognizer plastic toy and scale up a wireformed recognizer in its place. Make it more imposing and it will fill up the new space. I will sketch it out in different sizes and see. It seems I enjoy making things for machines over playing them lately.

Interesting.

sweet ! i would love to get this kit, I'll keep an eye out for it.

you deserve more upvotes for this, cant wait to see finished product.
powder coating these in a neon color would make it pop so hard!!

#9 1 year ago

Wow. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Very nice! I'd love to see what this looks like with the fiber optic ramp lighting attached.

Me too! I only have el wire at this point. With this ring rail type guides I can easily have the light be mounted below and dead center of the ball guides. The lights would be on the ball travel rolling point, not up on the sides. I think that would also look very nice. Like the ball is leaving the trail of light.

Thanks! And powder coat in the right color would also be interesting. I cant explain how much I have been wanting to do a Tron. I can see it in my head and I think when its all together its going look so different.

#12 1 year ago

Sick.

I'd be in for a kit as well. Following along.

#13 1 year ago

I’d be in for a kit too, this is needed as the game is getting older and ramps will be hard to find

#14 1 year ago

This is not finished, I have to stone, sand and polish them. But I am really digging the look. The first set I make is to get the design down. The next set will be more finished.

I dropped the rail off the rear mounts and I realized I could lower the height by accident. It will speed up ball and I like the look of the rail against the back panel graphic in this mid height position. They will be a little higher then pictured, but you can see what I am trying to do and the light cycles will also be on top of rails too.

Right side in progress. I have to extend this one as well.. I am happy so far. I need to straighten out spots and adjust, but I ran out of time for today.

Ooooooofa! I got it! Center mounted flexable (led) neon lights for trails! This is just stupid! Roughly mounted to verify look, I’m sold! I need to make a few modifications to mount these and I will figure out a way to have these triggered, but I love it.. pictures with glass on and off. I will try reversing colors soon.

I wish I could go back to 2011 and tell myself to not sell my TRON for 4k! If I had a TRON nowadays I’d definitely be asking for these ramps!

Quick video of ball travel on lights.

Oh, man...that is f'n sweet!

I am so excited for this.

Following this. I have always loved wire form ramps over plastic. Would the kit include the fibre optic cable? I have an LE and I'm thinking if I can just get another fibre optic rope and use the existing LED modules, then I could swap my plastic ramps without having to cut every single cable tie.

#22 1 year ago

Looks fantastic, im in for a set.
Just checking for those purchasing the interactive backboard display which replaces the backboard with a screen - does the wireform sit low enough at the back so as not to obscure the screen?

Or could there even be a “low profile” option here which keeps the wireform lower in that area - just an idea happy either way

I prefer wireforms over plastics and I found out I was not alone with the Mandalorian pro machine wireforms I made. Trons a beautifull game and its “the” game I always wanted to do.
They will come with the flexable neon light strips and power supplies. There are different colors available, but the blue and orange work for me. These are single color and do not change. I had tron twice before one with eli kit and one with total light show kit. These are brighter then both and the light just looks better as a solid strip of light. More like a trail like the cycle lights.

I will be making them height adjustable by backpanel with hardware. I planned on this previously as some might like them higher or lower and they can be fine tuned as a result with ball speed.

Would love to see you do wire forms on star wars pro with these neon ropes. Your work is awesome.

Thanks! I am buying a used plasma cutting table from a friend whos buying a bigger machine. I will be able to do more machines as a result. I will be able to make the metal ramp entances that star wars premiums have. And that would enable me to make wireforms for star wars. I am up to doing that game too. I just need to buy a pro, but I will get to it. Any other titles of interest please post.

Welded in a lower channel to hold led strip light. I do not want anything to obstruct the visual of the beam. Pain to do, but I think its worth it. Also worked out entrance. I need to cut transfer plate and adjust to see.

The channel works! Holds in place below the ball line under rails. Left rail 75 percent there. The orange looks better on this side. And ramp entrance bolts down through the two holes open for the fiber optic lights. They work perfectly for spacing. I can make a better looking ramp using all metal over plastic.

Orange Left and Blue Right looks correct.

Man. This is so cool to watch as it comes together. Great work, man.

I'm in for a set. Would be great to include the option of including light pipes so I can use existing eli kit and keeps plastic ramps whole, but I imagine that can be sourced.

How is that 1-Up Tron?

Quoted from guitarded:

Its actually pretty good. I had the arcade game in the past. It looks and sounds the same. The joystick is a little clicky, but plays fine. It comes with a riser and the stand up height is perfect. My blacklight and joystick lights dont work, but I am ok with that. Overall very happy with it. The discs of tron does not have the voices which does suck.

That’s what I’m hoping for too, a “with light pipe only” version so I can re-use the LED modules on the LE and keep the stock ramps in tact when I remove them. Then just connect the new light pipe on these wire forms to the existing modules. However, their comment about using the light pipe holes for mounting the ramp entrance may prevent that from being an option unless there’s another way to route the light pipe through the playfield.

#37 1 year ago

I am very interested in a set, if possible would prefer the LED neon to be RGB so I could just connect them to the LED driver boards that my fiber kit uses since it integrates the colors really well into the game

I could post mount the right side wireform, but there is no anchor points on the left ramp and that is why I mounted through the open holes. The entrances need to be solid. Not sure what I could do to alter the left. (See pictures). I will see if I can come up with a solution to not use the holes, but not sure because of the left side.

At the moment I am headed towards the two rails with lower channels for the led bendable lights only. I can also just sell them without any lights and leave that up to the buyers. Meaning the rails will have a channel that you can add any style or color that works for you.

I am still developing this set. I will have better ideas once both sides are completed with the switches and hardware installed. I need to find the balance of total costs and interested buyers.

I am guessing that if I can work out mounting not using the holes for fiber optic lights, there would be a choice. Rails with no lower channel with fiber on top rails or those with lower channel for others... we will get there...

Added mylar under flap, drilled plate, cut plate, made switch mounts and got left ramp together. I quit drinking April 21st 2005 today was quite a test of that choice! Wow did this suck to adjust..... Proto type 1 me 0..

Well I have to scrap the other ramp. It runs right into switch on the other. Trying a different way to make one using a guide wire showing the path. I copied the plastic ramps shapes and it turns out to be a mistake. Leason learned. Dont copy plastic ramps.. Booooo.

Adding pictures through out the day to this as to not post too much on topic.
12:30 base rails done.

This looks like a fun project, but I'm skeptical that you could produce these for many other owners (using basic/primitive tools). Wonder if it's possible for you to hand off your prototype (once complete) to a company that manufactures wireforms. In any event, looks like you are having fun, which is what it's about. Will also be interested in how the wireforms play when compared with the stock ramps...

#46 1 year ago

I am a small business that sells wireforms. A wire bending machine is almost 20k. As a result I shape everything by hand and tig weld by hand. I cant out produce a large company, but I have sold over 145 wireforms just for Mandalorian pros. Thats 290 wireforms made, tested and shipped since July. I will make and sell as many of anything I make in our shop. The only drawback is labor times as its done by hand and not machines.

#47 1 year ago

Progressing. Routing is good with spacing. I swapped out a hold down plastic screw with a longer screw installed under the playfield for a mounting point. Working on channel for led light. I ran out of flat tempered steel, so I cant finish until I get my parts from marcos, but happily moving along.

Orange led strip is just to verify channel. It will be blue. Good day!

Blue light not routed into playfield, but I just wanted to see the look as this rail is now corrected. I still have to mount switch, flasher and make plastic ramp. These are the two rails that I will improve upon, but hopefully you can see what I am shooting for!

It would be awesome to have the light strip fill the center all the way and bend off to the side. I know that would require a hole drilled about where the ramp flaps go but I’d be ok with that. If stock ramps were to be installed again the flaps would cover the hole.

Amazing work Logan! I really dig the wire form ramps and light mounted underneath.
