Hello all...I have been juggling around the idea of posting this to get the ball rolling officially and I think I am finally ready to announce it to the world. I've been working on this concept on and off for nearly 5 years...I've always felt that we skipped over TRON and went straight to TRON Legacy (Not a bad thing...great film great pinball). But the original film from 1982 has always been really special to me and one of my favorite films. So....here are just a few of the layout designs, rough backglass design, rough backglass art etc...that I've been working on over the last few years. I'm open to constructive input, design ideas, anything people think will make this a better game. I have a whitewood/prototype up (not complete) That has more than some the drawings, it's all still fluid until I get another P3ROC and power supplies etc. Then I can play with shots better and get things lined up. (I apologize for needing the watermarks on the images...there's a crypto company out there that already stole one piece to use on their site.....so......yeah....better safe than sorry)

    Backglass rough idea (layout)

Standalone rough drawings I have done so far for my Backglass layout

These pieces will all be put together for the final Backglass/translite. There are still quite a few more characters and pieces (Effects and background needed to complete it. (as you can see from the overall idea image)

Here are some layout Ideas and notes that I started with...

Here is a rough 1st draft of the playfield. My favorite thing I think so far is the I/O tower shot. If you hit it from the right side, it returns it to a flipper...hit it from the left and it goes up a ramp, through Flynn's window and out the light cycle ramp. The little diverter at the I/O Tower is simply on a spring. when it is hit from the right side, it gets pushed aside, and then sits flush with the wall so you can make the ramp shot through Flynn's.
    IMG_20201007_155520~2 (resized).jpgIMG_20201007_155520~2 (resized).jpg
This is just more notes on callouts and sound bytes I want to pull from the movie and the times in which they are played.
    IMG_20201007_155529~2 (resized).jpgIMG_20201007_155529~2 (resized).jpg
Idea for the Flynn's arcade and space paranoids arcade toys/buildings

    IMG_20201009_162924 (resized).jpgIMG_20201009_162924 (resized).jpg
Pop bumper area. Atop each of these will be one of BIT's responses (Yes, No or Neutral)...as seen in the next picture
    IMG_20201007_155600~2 (resized).jpgIMG_20201007_155600~2 (resized).jpg
    IMG_20201009_162944 (resized).jpgIMG_20201009_162944 (resized).jpg
Here is the I/O Tower loop/ lock / ramp
    IMG_20201007_155608~2 (resized).jpgIMG_20201007_155608~2 (resized).jpg
And the tank that will have a moving turret (Below it will be a bank of rebound shots for the slingshots)
    IMG_20201007_155615~2 (resized).jpgIMG_20201007_155615~2 (resized).jpg
and here are some random drawings/ideas.

Light cycle return rail from Flynn's (These will light up blue and red and make the light cycle sound as the shot is made. Brushed Plexiglass for the tail walls, edge lit with LED's
    IMG_20201009_162900 (resized).jpgIMG_20201009_162900 (resized).jpg
    IMG_20201009_162933 (resized).jpgIMG_20201009_162933 (resized).jpg

Sark's ship ramp (to the right of the pop bumpers (Floating)) On this will be a metal (Gold color chromed?) rail to the left flipper. On it will be a recognizer chasing the solar sailor. So you'll have Sark's ship, then a Recognizer then the sailor....huh...huh.....movie correlation. Haha.
    IMG_20201009_162939 (resized).jpgIMG_20201009_162939 (resized).jpg

and a newer drawing of the upper playfield layout (Both lower parts and the higher parts that are elevated above the field).
FYI - The 3rd flipper will have a separate flipper button to actuate it. I've always thought it would add something VS always having one button do both.

That's all for now folks. I hope you are excited for this as I cannot wait to really get going on it! I will be working on this over the winter as well as my other project (From scratch AFM Build (https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/attack-from-mars-scratch-build) I'm working on as well for the wife...Honestly working on that so that I can learn from it and make the mistakes there so my experience with TRON goes off without as many hitches). Please let me know what you think as well as anything you don't like as much or any idea you all think could make the game better! Thanks a whole lot, And hopefully I'll be posting about it again soon!

Your sketches look great. Way better than my chicken scratch hand drafting.

I like the idea of your IO shot with a passive spring based flap; however, I wonder if the ball would lose too much momentum in the horseshoe and opening the spring flip. It would come out, but I think it'll dribble out more than come flying back out to the opposite flipper (or SDTM instead).

It also seems sorta unnecessary. You could arrange the shot more like an "h" shape instead of a horseshoe. So a shot to the left still goes up a ramp, and a shot to the right still comes screaming back. It doesn't seem like shooting it up the left side is supposed to go back out through the right, so why even have the flap? The ball will hug the left side of the rail because of the vector of the shot.

Just my two cents. Definitely need to do some foam core tests to find the right feel on the shot.

Also the ramps are neat, but you may want to consider having a clear plastic ball guide within the walls to help the ball smoothly return instead of clunking around at right angles. Seems like it would slow the ball down too much when the cycletracks need to convey a high sense of speed.

    #3 3 years ago

So an idea I think that would be cool is you have to lock balls to get to The Grid. I know this is from the second movie but how awesome would it be to have the mini Tron cab swing out to reveal the ball lock.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Following this for sure as it’s a great theme.

    #4 3 years ago

TreyBo69 thanks. And yeah.....it is kind of an H......I'll upload a picture of my old whitewood....has that.....it's on the final. As well as the normal rails within the plexi. The plexi is just there for aesthetics.....to make it look like 1982 Tron. So yeah......thanks for the interest and the post. Excited to move forward.

    #5 3 years ago

Pickle hahaha right .....that would be cool. I do want to try and keep it fairly faithful, updated visually....but faithful to the original. Thanks for the post and the idea! Maybe I can sneak something like this in somewhere lol.

    #6 3 years ago

Here's an older version of the first whitewood. Think I may keep the idea of the grid like pattern for the playfield....just put the artwork over it. Also, the Sark ship is now a ramp of its own, not connected to Flynn's as shown here.

Cool ideas, can’t wait to see the execution on a flipping whitewood! In the mean time, that’s some nice looking foam core and cardboard work! Way better than mine!

Hi voltage (120) El wires are sweet and would work well here (I guess the stern tron has similar? I haven’t actually played it much). I tested some a while back and the 12v ones are pretty pathetic in comparison... you can get 1-5 control units to output out to 5 lengths (and colors) or wire and control it with a board driver.

    #8 3 years ago

Mbecker thanks! Yeah....not sure how I'm going to edge light the plexi. I think I've gone away from EL as that's before I thought of the plexi shell for the rail. But now...I've been thinking of lightly sanding the plexi, then edge lighting it (sanding so it catches the light). I think the plexi will give it that cool 1980's right angle turns. Still having a smooth normal rail inside it leading to the right flipper.

    Looks awesome. Following!

Great project! Subscribed... which one will be finished first ? Tron or Afm ?

By the way, in the virtual pinball world, there is a Tron Classic machine, see below... But does not look as fun as yours!

Whoah, really interesting ideas about PF layout and mechs. Will follow this build too
    Keep up the good work!

Awesome light cycle ramp. Looking forward to seeing this at a show.

    #14 3 years ago

    KevInBuffalo Thanks very much!

    #15 3 years ago

matiou Finished is such a...finite word. It could mean anything. Hahahahaha! Hopefully, AFM will be flipping soon...like before November. And Tron Flipping before the end of the year. I'll make sure to keep everyone posted.

    #16 3 years ago

Lhyrgoif nwpinball LoveNeverDiesGuy Thanks everyone.....Can't wait to weld that light cycle rail up and see it in action too! Hopefully I'll have a rough Tron prototype up by next years MGC....We'll keep our fingers crossed!

    #17 3 years ago

Trying to figure out the look and feel of ENCOM tower that will be in the back corner of the game. We never really got a feel for the look of the tower in the original, however in Legacy we get that really cool looking one with the side lit ENCOM insignia. Thoughts...Should I make it more like the newer version so we can have a really cool physical tower in the background? or should we make a generic looking tower and just slap the ENCOM label on there. hahahaha. Let me know what you're thinking in the poll!

    #18 3 years ago

Apparently...I do not know how polls work. hahahahahaha. So I closed My poll and can't do another one. So I guess no more polls and........just lemme know in a comment. Hahahaha

    #19 3 years ago

Also.....had some ideas on rules.....(I'll post the others that I made from the start when I can, I don't have them with me right now).

All shots like the I/O, Sarks, Light cycle are just shots for points that have a normal correlation for the video slides but once you make the ENCOM Shot (Just came up with idea) 3 (ish) times...(possibly a shot like Sauron's tower in the lord of the rings (Back right lock), there will be a slide with the video of Flynn V.S MCP in the laser bay and maybe something will change in terms of the lights (Black light/UV) and add some digital stylized art. Flynn will get pulled into the Laser and then shots will be like you are on the Grid animations and scoring will differ.

Also, If you make the I/O shot (TBD) a set number of times, you can light the VUK lock in the center, Once you lock the ball....you then receive the instructions from ALAN1 on how to defeat the MCP (Play clip of movie from that scene).

At some point (POSSIBLY...I am still not sure on tackling a toy like the ringmaster in circus voltaire) MCP rises out of the middle of the game, and has the center shot blocked (Either a small deflector that will move later or a drop target....something).

When MCP is lit, make all shots on the game (minus the middle shot to kill MCP) to make the middle shot open up (Final Mode) and be able make the ball capture. Once in the MCP, maybe I'll have a subway take it to the main trough so that the game can just launch a ball to start the next ball (Think the end of the rule the universe mode in AFM).

These are all thoughts.....still working everything out.

Let me know what you all think!

    #20 3 years ago

    ALL THE HORSESHOES!
    Looks awesome!
I love your sketches for sure.

    #21 3 years ago

DeadFlip Hahahahahahaha! Thanks. I'm hopeful that this horseshow with the passive gate on the spring will be teh awesome! It worked good on the prototype but that was with no power to flippers.....we'll see if it rips it to shreds on the whitewood. Hahaha

    #23 3 years ago

    EJS Thanks a lot!

    #24 3 years ago

I'm just gonna keep throwing out ideas on here as I get them......no matter how repetitive or possibly dumb. That was I can get feedback and progress faster! Hahahahaha.

    #25 3 years ago

Something like this that will have the LED ENCOM insignia on it. The VUK will be in the back behind it? Maybe.....kinda........sure? Hahaha.1602783983188722776061991787835 (resized).jpg1602783983188722776061991787835 (resized).jpg

    #26 3 years ago

And if I end up doing the MCP out the middle, it'd maybe be something like this (just not as tall)want there to be an identity disc on top.....that's gotta happen.

Sorry for the lack of uploads. Been dealing with mold in the basement and getting that remedied. So....Now that it is safe to be down there, moving my games/Pinball machines there and will continue to work on that!

After finding out about the VP (Visual Pinball) and MPF crossover that can exist, I'm going to be working on layout of the game in VP first for shots and modes etc...then working on the flipping whitewood. This will give me time to work on Attack From Mars and get familiar with the setup of the components.

Until then, here is a snapshot of my current VP table. Not perfect (Since I don't know what I'm doing).....but shots are working nicely!

If anyone has insight on making a Diverter like the one in Elvira or AFM that moves to Divert the ball in VP (will be on the left of the horsehoe)...Please help me out as the VP game would then work like I know it can in real life. hahahaha.

    Thanks everyone.

In older versions of VP, we used either super-thin flippers (for straight diverters) or droppable walls (for custom-shaped diverters). Haven't used VPX so I don't know if there's a better way now.

    #29 3 years ago

Gornkleschnitzer thanks.....I'll try and figure it out......I made a foam table and it's a lot harder to make digital than to make by hand ( in VPX...I think blender would be much easier). Hahahaha. At least for me.

Can you use the code from VPX to translate the the physical version or is this just a digital whitewood?

    #31 3 years ago

Palmer apparently...there's something called MPF bridge ...should allow me to assign the triggers/targets etc to the MPF .YAML File and have it think that VPX is a real game. Then when it's time.....coding can be applied to the real game. That's from what I understand...still waiting on a computer I can get to put MPF on. Using my work computer with VPX since it's an exe file. But need to own one that I can dedicate to pinball soni can install MPF onto it.

    #32 3 years ago

Yeah the idea is that you can run the same MPF game on a VPX table and on your real machine. You can also play your game virtually in the MPF monitor but that won't give you real physics simulation. Playtesting in VPX is nice to tune timings, shot indications and to test modes. MPF monitor is easier when developing modes. Just the right tool for the right job.

    #33 3 years ago

Alright.....kids were sick so I did some things I could set and forget. Just started using a 3D printer so be kind...have a lot of tweaking of settings still...but it's coming along. But got the yes and no prototype pop bumpers toppers printed......and one of two of the recognizers that will go on the right wire form that drops to the left flipper. any thoughts? Still have to do the stands and the neutral bit print.

Recognizer downloaded on thingiverse from creator AliG3D

Bit and stands downloaded on thingiverse from creator Ferjerez

Will be also be modeling a space paranoids cabinet and printing that alongside the laser that pulls them into the digital world.

OK, this looks like a great start! I am in, and I also checked out the AFM thread - in on that as well!

    #35 3 years ago

ReadyPO thanks! Just got my high voltage PSU. things are going to start happening now. Ha ha ha

    #37 3 years ago

Tsskinne Thanks. Got the second recognizer printed. now to print the tank and to finish modeling and printing Sark's carrier.

Just a quick update. Life has been crazy between work, COVID and X-mas on the way. I'll be hitting the Pinball back up when I get a chance early in 2021. Sorry for anybody waiting by the computer for any updates and not receiving any. hahahaha.....I doubt there are any. lol! Thanks everyone and I'll see you in the new year. (P.S. - I did receive my final shipment from Pinball Life and will go over that as well in the new year (Haven't really even looked at them...just ordered and made sure the stuff was there).

Alright...here we go. I'm super sorry I've been lacking in my posts on this game build. Life has been crazy with work, kids, life, COVID etc.......the excuses go on. There just hasn't been ti.......I haven't been making time for the hobby. Hopefully over the course of the winter here, I'll get more and more time to work on it physically as well as software-ly (lol). I have recently been building a cart on pinball life to finish getting everything I need to mount this playfield to the cabinet and have also been working on trying to get the head for this cabinet built so that I can get the full cabinet assembled. I may wait till Black friday times to see if there is another sale like last year, and grab these parts at a bit of a discount (fingers crossed)

I'm sad that I couldn't make Expo or MGC this year...So I'm really hoping to be able to bring this or Attack From Mars(in prototype condition) to one or both next year. I'll try to be more active on here and keep the updates coming. Sorry again to anyone biting their nails waiting (I'm assuming there are none...but just in case)

Thanks for hanging in there and I'll post again soon!

I think covid killed many of our motivation.

I'm sorry about the lack of everything Pinball related everyone...My father passed away near the beginning of this year and it's really put a damper on all my plans for this (As we were going to be doing a lot of this together) and every other hobby / interest. I have an art background and he was a systems analyst and prgrammer...so I was really leaning on him with this project to get the wiring and programming going. I am getting to the point of wanting to start back up...I'm sorry I've neglected posting but it's just taken time to do much of anything other than normal adulting. I'll get back to the forums here shortly. Thanks everyone!

There are far lamer excuses for a homebrew pinball taking a hiatus. Sorry for your loss, that's gotta be tough.
