I've been to Portal about 150 times and just the other day was the first time that I actually completed it. I'm just curious to know how many other people have because it is such a difficult task. Have you or someone you know completed it? Remember, there's a difference between getting to Portal and ACTUALLY completing it (all 24 ramp shots + the disc shot for Super Jackpot).

Also, feel free to also discuss any strategies and big tips to get SOS lit, navigating through it, and completing Portal.

#2 9 years ago

There are a million old threads on SOS strats... Been to portal probably 40+ times myself, never even close to finishing.

#4 9 years ago

Good job, FED! It's great you got that on camera. I was in a similar situation where I was down to one ball during Portal and my next shot was crucial in getting another ball added to keep the mode going. I think that happened two or three times. I was laughing my ass off.

Unrelated question - How many different ways are there to get Light Cycle mode completed (solidly lit on the ladder)?

Is it utterly sad that I would consider getting to Portal an accomplishment?

Not at all. Getting to Portal is a MAJOR accomplishment. Many many times when I reached it my hands were literally shaking. After about the 75th-100th time my hands finally decided to calm down.

Portal is fun, but I've always said that navigating through SOS was my favorite part of the game.

#7 9 years ago

finishing this pin, for me, will remain something linked only to luck !
with my son, we now have been ton portal surelly more than 100 times, not really a prob until there, but after is another story ... was close 2 or 3 times, but close didnt means completed

#8 9 years ago

My god, I must just really suck at pinball because it took me over 1,650 games to even reach portal. It does not matter though 'cause I loved every single game. We cant all be the best players but we can all enjoy playing.
Tron rocks and climbing the SOS ladder is one of the funnest challenges I find in pinball.

Congrats! It's a great feeling.

I made a # of posts on tips for getting to and finishing Portal a couple years back. I don't feel like searching for them, but you can feel free.

less than 10 games yesterday, 2 portals reached, while one was even done at a ... 1st ball

but again, these 2 game-finals ended in the same misery for me, and than not completed as always (lol)

I really struggled about getting a Tron Pro vs an LE. That's an awful lot of dough to be tied in to one pin that was REALLY similar to the other. I don't mean to stir the pot with that statement. Just my opinion.

Ultimately, it was talking to long term Tron owners who said, "Daft Punk Multiball??!! You'll be lucky to see Portal!!", that swayed my decision.

I was lucky. I got a great price on a Legacy Pro with the lenticular BG. Added Eli Ramps, LEDs, LED flippers, Sub etc etc... I couldn't be happier.

No Portal yet. But I've only had the pin for a few weeks. Getting better at consistently making the Gem shot now. It's only a matter of time.

#12 9 years ago

What was your score on the game that you beat portal?

How about the scores of people who reached portal?

#13 9 years ago

(TRON LE, 3 balls settings, PORTAL never fully completed)

my son : 326M
me : 287M

#14 9 years ago

Some amazing scores...

#15 9 years ago

No, you're the only one that has actually finished it.
j/k
Finished it a few years ago on location.

You basically want to focus on the left ramp -> Quorra -> right ramp combo. I think there are other ways to do it, but this is the easiest.

#17 9 years ago

i make it to portal every single game (that the glass is off)

I agree that is the easiest way. Another is left ramp --> Quorra --> Gem. We must keep in mind that there is a delayed timer so if we miss one of those shots there's still time (like 5 seconds for the 2nd and 3rd shot, each).

My leaderboard scores are 336, 321, 320, 284, and 282 million. Those scores have at least one portal and most likely two SOS's. Factory settings (EB at 12 ramps).

Haha not at all, I'm the same way!

800 games maybe 25 portals lol

130M high score

It was my first pin, ok???

#21 9 years ago

I really don't get to actually play much pinball. Too much work and family. But today I reached portal for the first time. 44 million on sea simulation. Sad only 3 million on portal. Had no idea what to do when I got there but it felt pretty good to finally reach it.
134 million for me, the best I have ever done!

#22 9 years ago

Sadly, not even close for me.

I've completed Jericho on IM several times. Just "not in the cards" on Portal.

I've always found Portal to be a major disappointment in terms of points compared to SoS. I've never completed Portal, though. I've been 4-5 shots away a couple times. How much is the Portal super jackpot worth if you complete it?

#24 9 years ago

well not a fixed one, as its linked to the PF X2 when collecting the jackpots will all the inserts

The Super Jackpot I got was around 36 million. I was too excited to get it that I didn't even consider shooting for DOUBLE SCORING which could have been 72 million. Next time!

#26 9 years ago

All I know is that I finally got the 100 mil double-scored Portal all-solid-inserts-on-start bonus. On ball 1. Have been trying to do that FOR.EV.ER.

Pulling that off is one of the biggest rushes in all of pinball. I've only done it once myself, and it was by accident. I didn't even realize I had double scoring running until my score suddenly shot up from $75M to $175M.

#28 9 years ago

Oh, i knew... I had to intentionally shoot the pop bumpers twice to change the mode before shooting the last TRON letter to get it on double scoring and pray that it didn't ricochet into the scoop LOL.

But yeah, starting quorra and LC stack, getting the three way combo, Quorra SJP started Gem, then gem again all in under like 30 seconds was just like.....WHAT THE BLOOP!?

#29 9 years ago

I'm new to Tron, but I REALLY like it. I modded mine to with an inch of its life. Eli Ramps, Cointaker LEDs, LED Flipper buttons, Latest Arcade Mod, Pinblades, all the usuals.

I absolutely LOVE SOS. It's such a great high pressure opportunity to lead to the big show. Total blast.

When I started playing, I'd focus on LC MB, and Disc MB, and try to pick up Quorra in the process. I'd end up at SOS with at least 3-4 inserts lit solid, and then SOS seemed like an insurmountable task (and likely IS).

Now I focus strictly on the Gem shot. I advance Quorra in the process, start and complete Gem, and really focus on getting inserts lit solid BEFORE starting SOS.

The last few times I made it to SOS, I needed only one insert. That seems a lot easier to handle.

I made it to Portal Friday night. I've only had the game since the start of the summer, and I've been away for much of it. I would estimate I have fewer than 200 plays on the machine.

I'm not trying to blow my own horn here. I'm trying to say that a methodical approach, with a focus on the Gem shot will take you a long way in this game.

I didn't even scratch the surface in Portal. I had a fun Multiball while trying to take in the sounds, and the new DMD scenes. Didn't make it far, or rack up a huge score. But getting to Portal felt amazing. My score was just over 88 Mil.

I'm a total Tron convert. Fast, fun, and challenging enough to drop a few sub 10 Mil games on you, yet deep enough to be incredibly rewarding when you're in the zone.

Wow that's a lot of cash!

I finally just did this last week. Such a sweet feeling. Shooting the tron standups for 2x scoring feels so wrong when portal is lit....

Yep, way more high pressure than trying to shoot the bell on AC/DC..lol...at least you know where that shot is coming back. Tron targets? Good luck with that. Odds are you're either going up in the disc if the bank is open, or nicking the left side of the left pop and going god-knows-where, or hitting a slingshot and power outlane...

I will say that I did still manage to find something new on this game that I didn't know about. I'm not sure I ever actively tried it on my first Tron, or on location, but I've found on my game at home, I can actually BACKHAND the left ramp!? Never knew that was possible...but thanks to knowing I can backhand the right ramp on Metallica, I at least tried...and it worked.

let's add my son to the "completed portal" club !

done today at the DPO, he played few games only (...), got twice to portal, and for the 1st time finished it
than, if you're the owner of this pin and member here, you know who's the "ANT" tag

good job son

#36 9 years ago

Not even close for me....glass coming off soon for a "playfield cleaning" and may have to get back to you ....I've only got to just under 100m and SOS....been working it a few months now.....
