Print them with only black ink on plain paper until you know what you are doing in GIMP (if you own PS I assume you know what you are doing).

For those that don't care for the learning curve of PS or GIMP, Photoscape is a nice free alternative. Not nearly as powerful but you can do some nice stuff with it.
